In this lesson you will learn to talk about music in beginner Spanish. You will use me encanta (I love it), me gusta (I like it), and soy muy fan de (I'm a big fan of) with genres like pop, rock, and jazz. You will also learn to ask a friend ¿Qué música te gusta? and to compare tastes with a mí también (me too) or a mí no (not me). We use Latin American Spanish and note regional differences.

Fan is common in casual speech. Del = de + el, used with masculine genres like el jazz.

Useful pattern
Use me gusta + singular noun for one genre or artist: Me gusta el pop. Me gusta Bad Bunny. Use me gustan + plural noun: Me gustan las baladas. Me gustan los Beatles. For strong love, use me encanta / me encantan: Me encanta el jazz. Me encantan las canciones de Shakira. To name a fan feeling, say Soy fan de... or Soy muy fan de...: Soy fan de la salsa.
When to use it
Use these phrases in casual conversation with friends. Ask ¿Qué música te gusta? and answer with a genre or artist. To compare, respond A mí también if you agree, or A mí no if you do not. You can also ask ¿Y a ti? (And you?) to keep the conversation going. Example: —Me encanta el pop. ¿Y a ti? —A mí también, pero prefiero el rock.

In Latin American Spanish, el pop, el rock, and el jazz are masculine, but la salsa, la cumbia, and la balada are feminine. In casual talk, soy fan de is very common; in more formal settings, me gusta mucho or soy aficionado/a a may sound more polished. Regional tastes vary: bachata and merengue are popular in the Caribbean, while cumbia and regional Mexican music are common in Mexico.
One thing to watch for
Saying Me gusta pop without the article, or using me gusta with a plural noun.
Try this instead: Spanish normally uses the article with genres: Me gusta el pop. With plural nouns, use me gustan: Me gustan las baladas. For strong love, use me encanta el pop or me encantan las baladas.
