Free lesson path Phrase audioNo sign-up needed

In this workshop you will practice a short, realistic conversation at a post office counter. You will learn how to ask whether you can insure a package, how to state a declared value, how to ask what the insurance covers, and how to understand a staff member's reply about coverage and cost. The practice moves from guided speaking to listening comprehension and finally to recall with correct roles. You can practice both the customer and the staff member, using the recorded lines as your model. Speak out loud, repeat each line several times, and check your answers with the self-checks provided.

    Asking to Insure a Package

Start with the basic question a customer asks at the counter. The line «¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?» means "Can I insure this package?" Use it when you want to know if insurance is available for the item you are sending. A polite opening is also useful. The line «Buenos días. ¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?» means "Good morning. Can I insure this package?" Notice that the greeting comes first, then the question. Practice saying both lines slowly, then at a natural speed. Pay attention to the rhythm of the question and keep your voice calm and clear. When you speak, look at the staff member and use a friendly tone. These two lines give you a simple way to begin the conversation without needing any other words.

    Declared Value, Coverage, and Cost

After the customer asks about insurance, the staff member needs to know the value of the package. The line «Sí, claro. ¿Cuál es el valor declarado?» means "Yes, of course. What is the declared value?" This is the staff member's question, so the customer answers with a value. The line «Quiero declarar un valor de cien dólares.» means "I want to declare a value of one hundred dollars." The customer can also combine the value and a question about coverage. The line «Quiero declarar un valor de cien dólares. ¿Qué cubre el seguro?» means "I want to declare a value of one hundred dollars. What does the insurance cover?" The staff member then explains the coverage and the price. The line «Cubre pérdida y daño. El costo es el uno por ciento del valor. ¿Desea asegurarlo?» means "It covers loss and damage. The cost is one percent of the value. Do you want to insure it?" This reply tells you what is covered and how the cost is calculated. The line «¿Cuánto cuesta el seguro?» means "How much does the insurance cost?" and the line «¿Qué cubre el seguro?» means "What does the insurance cover?" Use these two questions when you need to ask about price or coverage directly.

    Putting the Conversation Together

Now combine the lines into a full exchange. The customer begins with «Buenos días. ¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?», the staff member replies with «Sí, claro. ¿Cuál es el valor declarado?», the customer continues with «Quiero declarar un valor de cien dólares. ¿Qué cubre el seguro?», and the staff member answers with «Cubre pérdida y daño. El costo es el uno por ciento del valor. ¿Desea asegurarlo?». This gives you a complete, natural conversation. If you want to ask about cost separately, use «¿Cuánto cuesta el seguro?». If you want to ask about coverage separately, use «¿Qué cubre el seguro?». If you only need the basic insurance question, use «¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?». If you need to state a value on its own, use «Quiero declarar un valor de cien dólares.». Practice the full exchange first as the customer, then as the staff member. Keep each role clear: the customer asks and answers, while the staff member explains and asks a final question. This helps you hear the difference between the two roles and prepares you for the practice tasks on this page.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Customer and Staff

You are at a post office counter with a package. You will practice the customer's lines first, then the staff member's lines. Use the recorded lines as your model and speak each line out loud.

Your task: As the customer, say the opening line «Buenos días. ¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?». Then, as the staff member, reply with «Sí, claro. ¿Cuál es el valor declarado?». As the customer again, say «Quiero declarar un valor de cien dólares. ¿Qué cubre el seguro?». Finally, as the staff member, answer with «Cubre pérdida y daño. El costo es el uno por ciento del valor. ¿Desea asegurarlo?». Repeat the exchange, then switch roles and do it again.

    2

Reply Comprehension: What Did the Staff Member Say?

Listen to or read the staff member's reply «Cubre pérdida y daño. El costo es el uno por ciento del valor. ¿Desea asegurarlo?». Identify what is covered, how the cost is calculated, and the final question.

Your task: Answer these questions in English: What does the insurance cover? How is the cost calculated? What does the staff member ask at the end? Then say the staff member's line out loud.

    3

    Recall with Correct Roles

Cover the lines and try to remember the full conversation. You will say each line from memory, keeping the correct role for each speaker.

Your task: Say the customer's opening line from memory. Then say the staff member's reply from memory. Then say the customer's next line from memory. Finally, say the staff member's answer from memory. If you get stuck, use the recorded lines as a reference and try again.

    Common questions

Do I need to memorize every line before practicing?

No. Start by repeating each line several times while looking at it. Then try to say it without looking. The goal is to become comfortable with the sounds and the order of the conversation.

Can I practice both the customer and the staff member roles?

Yes. Playing both roles helps you understand the full conversation. When you are the customer, focus on asking and answering clearly. When you are the staff member, focus on explaining coverage and cost and asking the final question.
