When you send a package in a Spanish-speaking country, you may want to protect it against loss or damage. This lesson teaches you how to ask "Can I insure this package?" and how to understand the answer. You will learn key vocabulary for insurance, coverage, and value, plus polite ways to ask follow-up questions. The focus is on broadly useful Latin American Spanish, with notes on regional differences where they matter. By the end, you will be able to handle a basic insurance conversation at a post office or courier office.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask if I can insure a package in Spanish.
    • understand and ask about coverage, cost, and claim limits.
    • state the declared value of a package and ask what happens if it is lost.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    ¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?

    Can I insure this package?

    PWEH-doh ah-seh-goo-RAHR ES-teh pah-KEH-teh

Standard polite question at a post office or courier counter. Use 'asegurar' for 'to insure' a shipment.

    ¿Cuánto cuesta el seguro?

How much does the insurance cost?

    KWAHN-toh KWEHS-tah el seh-GOO-roh

Ask this after confirming that insurance is available. 'Seguro' is the noun for 'insurance'.

    ¿Qué cubre el seguro?

    What does the insurance cover?

    keh KOO-breh el seh-GOO-roh

Use 'cubrir' for 'to cover.' This asks about the scope of coverage.

Quiero declarar un valor de cien dólares.

I want to declare a value of one hundred dollars.

    KYEH-roh deh-klah-RAHR oon bah-LOR deh SYEHN DOH-lah-rehs

Declaring value is often required for insurance. Replace 'cien dólares' with your actual amount and currency.

¿Qué pasa si se pierde el paquete?

What happens if the package is lost?

    keh PAH-sah see seh PYEHR-deh el pah-KEH-teh

Use this to ask about the claims process. 'Perderse' means 'to get lost.'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask about insurance, use '¿Puedo asegurar...?' (Can I insure...?) or '¿Se puede asegurar...?' (Can one insure...?). For example: '¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?' and '¿Se puede asegurar este sobre?' (Can this envelope be insured?). To ask about coverage, use '¿Qué cubre...?' as in '¿Qué cubre el seguro?' (What does the insurance cover?). To ask about cost, use '¿Cuánto cuesta...?' as in '¿Cuánto cuesta asegurar este paquete?' (How much does it cost to insure this package?). These patterns work in most Latin American countries.

    When to use it

Use these questions at the counter before you pay. First ask if insurance is available: '¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?' If yes, ask about coverage: '¿Qué cubre el seguro?' Then ask about cost: '¿Cuánto cuesta el seguro?' If the clerk asks for the value, say: 'Quiero declarar un valor de...' and give the amount. Finally, ask about the process: '¿Qué pasa si se pierde el paquete?' or '¿Cómo reclamo el seguro?' (How do I claim the insurance?). In some countries, the word for 'package' may be 'paquete' or 'encomienda'; 'encomienda' is common in Mexico and parts of Central America for a parcel sent through a postal service.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Latin America, insurance for packages is often optional and may be called 'seguro de envío' or 'seguro de mercancía.' The term for 'package' varies: 'paquete' is widely understood, while 'encomienda' is common in Mexico and some Central American countries for postal parcels. When speaking with a clerk, use 'usted' to be polite unless you are in a very informal setting. It is also common to ask '¿Me conviene asegurarlo?' (Is it worth insuring it?) to get advice.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'seguro' as an adjective meaning 'safe' when you mean 'insurance.' For example, saying '¿Es seguro este paquete?' to ask if you can insure it.

Try this instead: 'Seguro' can mean 'safe' or 'insurance' depending on context. To ask about insurance, use the verb 'asegurar': '¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?' (Can I insure this package?). If you ask '¿Es seguro este paquete?', it means 'Is this package safe?' which is a different question.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask 'Can I insure this package?' in Spanish?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?

This uses 'puedo' (I can) + 'asegurar' (to insure) + 'este paquete' (this package). You could also say '¿Se puede asegurar este paquete?' which is more impersonal but equally correct.

2What question would you ask to find out what the insurance covers?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Qué cubre el seguro?

This directly asks 'What does the insurance cover?' You could also ask '¿Qué está cubierto?' (What is covered?) but '¿Qué cubre el seguro?' is more common.

3How do you say 'I want to declare a value of fifty dollars'?

    Show a sample answer

Quiero declarar un valor de cincuenta dólares.

This uses 'quiero declarar' (I want to declare) + 'un valor de' (a value of) + the amount. You can replace 'cincuenta dólares' with any amount and currency.

    Take this with you

Use '¿Puedo asegurar este paquete?' to ask about insurance, then follow up with '¿Qué cubre el seguro?' and '¿Cuánto cuesta?' to understand coverage and cost. Always declare the value and ask about the claims process.
