In this workshop you will practice a short, useful exchange: asking how much a ticket costs and understanding the price you hear. You will first study the meaning of each Korean line in English, then use the recordings to run a guided exchange, choose the right reply, and finally recall the whole exchange with the roles swapped. The recordings are your model; listen and repeat before you speak on your own.

    Asking the price

The simplest way to ask a price is a short question. «표가 얼마예요?» means "How much is the ticket?" If you want to name the destination, you can add it: «서울까지 표가 얼마예요?» means "How much is a ticket to Seoul?" and «부산까지 얼마예요?» means "How much is it to Busan?" Notice that the destination comes before the price question in these lines. When you speak, keep your voice calm and let the question rise slightly at the end. Practice each line slowly, then at a natural speed. You can point to a ticket or a route map while you say it, so the other person knows what you are asking about.

    Understanding the answer

The answer gives a price. «만 원이에요.» means "It is ten thousand won." In a real exchange, the staff member may answer quickly, so listen for the number. If you miss it, you can ask for a repeat: «네? 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요.» means "Pardon? Please say that one more time." The other person may then repeat and clarify: «만 원이에요. 십만 원이 아니에요.» means "It is ten thousand won. It is not one hundred thousand won." The second sentence helps you check the number. When you practice, say the price back to yourself quietly to confirm it. If you are not sure, ask again rather than guessing.

    Putting the exchange together

A full exchange can be short. One person asks, the other answers. «저기요, 서울까지 표가 얼마예요?» means "Excuse me, how much is a ticket to Seoul?" and «만 원이에요.» means "It is ten thousand won." In this scene, the first speaker is the customer and the second speaker is the staff member. If you swap roles, the customer still asks first and the staff member still answers; only who reads which part changes. Keep the order: question, answer, then any follow-up. Practice the whole exchange with the recordings, then try it without looking at the English.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

    저기요, 서울까지 표가 얼마예요?

Excuse me, how much is a ticket to Seoul?
    B

    만 원이에요.

    It is ten thousand won.

Pardon? Please say that one more time.
    B

    만 원이에요. 십만 원이 아니에요.

It is ten thousand won. It is not one hundred thousand won.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: ask and answer

You will play both roles in a short ticket-buying scene. Use the recordings as your model. The customer asks first; the staff member answers.

Your task: Listen to «저기요, 서울까지 표가 얼마예요?» and «만 원이에요.». Then read the customer line aloud, pause, and read the staff line aloud. Repeat three times. Then swap roles: if you were the customer, now be the staff member, but keep the same order — customer question first, then staff answer. Only your role changes, not the order.

    2

    Choose the right reply

You hear a customer ask about a ticket. You need to choose the reply that gives a price.

Your task: Read the customer line «저기요, 서울까지 표가 얼마예요?». Which reply fits: «만 원이에요.» or «네? 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요.»? Say your choice aloud, then check the answer key below.

    3

Recall the exchange with roles swapped

Now try the exchange from memory. You will still keep the same order: question first, answer second. Only who plays the customer and who plays the staff member changes.

Your task: Without looking at the English, say the customer question from «저기요, 서울까지 표가 얼마예요?» and the staff answer from «만 원이에요.». Then swap roles: if you were the customer, now be the staff member, but still say the question first and the answer second. If you need help, listen to the recordings again.

    Common questions

What if I do not understand the price?

You can ask for a repeat. «네? 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요.» means "Pardon? Please say that one more time." The other person may then repeat and clarify, as in «만 원이에요. 십만 원이 아니에요.», which means "It is ten thousand won. It is not one hundred thousand won." Listen for the number and say it back to yourself to check.

    Can I practice alone?

Yes. You can play both roles with the recordings. Read the customer line, then the staff line, and keep the same order. When you swap roles, only who reads each part changes; the question still comes before the answer. There is no automatic assessment, so check your own speaking against the recordings.
