How to Ask How Much a Ticket Costs in Korean

Learn the Korean pattern for asking the price of a ticket to a destination, using 얼마예요? and polite -까지 expressions, and understand common answers in won.

Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

In this lesson you will learn one focused skill: asking how much a ticket costs in Korean. The key expression is 얼마예요? (eolmayeyo?), which means 'How much is it?' You will combine it with a destination plus 까지 (kkaji), meaning 'to' or 'as far as', to ask 'How much is a ticket to...?' You will also learn to recognise simple price answers in Korean won. This lesson is about asking and understanding prices, not about buying, reserving or paying, so you can stay focused on the question itself.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask how much a ticket to a place costs using 얼마예요?
    • recognise and understand a simple price answer in Korean won
    • use 까지 to say 'to' a destination in a price question
    • ask a polite follow-up when I do not understand the price

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    표가 얼마예요?

    How much is the ticket?

    pyo-ga eol-ma-ye-yo

The most direct general question. 표 means 'ticket' and is the subject of the sentence with the particle 가.

    서울까지 표가 얼마예요?

How much is a ticket to Seoul?

    seo-ul-kka-ji pyo-ga eol-ma-ye-yo

Add a destination plus 까지 before the question. Replace 서울 with any place name.

    부산까지 얼마예요?

How much is it to Busan?

    bu-san-kka-ji eol-ma-ye-yo

When the topic is already clear, you can drop 표 and ask only destination plus 얼마예요?

    만 원이에요.

    It is ten thousand won.

    man wo-ni-e-yo

A typical answer. 만 means ten thousand, so 만 원 is 10,000 won. The verb ending 이에요 attaches to the price.

    다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요.

Please say that one more time.

    da-si han beon mal-sseum-hae ju-se-yo

A polite way to ask for repetition when you did not catch the price. Useful at ticket counters.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is [destination] + 까지 + 표가 + 얼마예요? For example, 대구까지 표가 얼마예요? means 'How much is a ticket to Daegu?' 까지 marks the endpoint of travel, like 'to' or 'as far as'. If the ticket is already obvious from context, you can shorten it to 대구까지 얼마예요? Both are correct and common. To answer, state the amount plus 이에요, as in 오천 원이에요 (It is five thousand won).

    When to use it

Use these questions at a ticket window, a bus terminal or a train station when you only want the price. 얼마예요? is polite and safe for strangers. If you need a more formal tone with staff, you can say 얼마입니까? (eol-ma-im-ni-kka?), which is more formal. For everyday situations, 얼마예요? is perfectly appropriate. Remember that Korean does not use articles like 'a' or 'the', so 표가 얼마예요? can mean 'How much is the ticket?' or 'How much is a ticket?' depending on context.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    저기요, 서울까지 표가 얼마예요?

    Excuse me, how much is a ticket to Seoul?jeo-gi-yo, seo-ul-kka-ji pyo-ga eol-ma-ye-yo
    B

    만 원이에요.

It is ten thousand won.man wo-ni-e-yo
    A

    네? 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요.

Pardon? Please say that one more time.ne? da-si han beon mal-sseum-hae ju-se-yo
    B

    만 원이에요. 십만 원이 아니에요.

It is ten thousand won. It is not one hundred thousand won.man wo-ni-e-yo. sim-man wo-ni a-ni-e-yo

A little context goes a long way

Korean prices are usually given in won, and large amounts are often grouped in units of 만 (ten thousand). For example, 10,000 won is 만 원, and 50,000 won is 오만 원. When you do not understand a price, it is polite to say 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요 rather than just 네? repeatedly. Staff may also show the amount on a screen or calculator, which is common and helpful.

    One thing to watch for

Using 에 instead of 까지 for the destination, as in 서울에 표가 얼마예요?

Try this instead: For a price question about travel to a place, use 까지: 서울까지 표가 얼마예요? The particle 에 often marks a location where something exists or happens, not the endpoint of a fare. 까지 clearly means 'up to' or 'as far as' the destination.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask 'How much is a ticket to Busan?'

    Show a sample answer

    부산까지 표가 얼마예요?

This uses the destination 부산 plus 까지, then 표가 얼마예요? You could also say 부산까지 얼마예요? if the ticket is already clear from context.

    2What does 만 원이에요 mean?

    Show a sample answer

    It is ten thousand won.

만 means ten thousand, 원 is the Korean currency, and 이에요 is the polite ending meaning 'it is'. So 만 원이에요 means 'It is 10,000 won.'

3You did not catch the price. What polite phrase can you use?

    Show a sample answer

    다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요.

This means 'Please say that one more time.' It is polite and useful when you miss a price. You could also say 천천히 말씀해 주세요 (Please speak slowly).

    Take this with you

To ask a ticket price in Korean, use [destination]까지 표가 얼마예요? Listen for the amount plus 이에요, and ask 다시 한 번 말씀해 주세요 if you need the price repeated.
