In this workshop you will practice simple Japanese for talking about social events. You will hear and use recorded lines about a wedding and a party, including asking how an event was and replying that it was beautiful or fun. You will also practice saying that you met friends at the party. The practice moves from a guided exchange to choosing the right reply, then to recalling the lines with the correct roles.
Asking How an Event Was
When someone tells you about an event, a common next step is to ask how it was. The recorded line «結婚式はどうでしたか。» means "How was the wedding?" Use it after you hear that someone went to a wedding. If the person has just told you about the event, you can first show you are listening with «そうですか。どうでしたか。», which means "I see. How was it?" Then listen for the answer. The answer may describe the event with a word like beautiful or fun, as in «結婚式は美しかったです。», which means "The wedding was beautiful." Keep your voice calm and friendly when you ask, and let the other person finish before you respond.
Describing a Wedding and a Party
To describe a wedding, you can use «結婚式は美しかったです。», meaning "The wedding was beautiful." To describe a party, you can use «パーティーは楽しかったです。», meaning "The party was fun." If you want to add what you did, use «私はパーティーで友達に会いました。», meaning "I met friends at the party." A longer example that combines these ideas is «とても美しかったです。それから、パーティーで友達に会いました。», which means "It was very beautiful. Also, I met friends at the party." When someone asks about the party, you can answer with «パーティーは楽しかったです。» or add more with «私はパーティーで友達に会いました。». Notice that the event word changes the meaning: wedding in «結婚式は美しかったです。» and party in «パーティーは楽しかったです。» and «私はパーティーで友達に会いました。». Practice saying each line clearly, then try swapping the event word only when the recording supports it.
Following the Order of a Short Exchange
A short exchange about an event often follows a simple order: one person shares news, the other asks for more, then the first person answers. In the recorded exchange, speaker A says «昨日、友達の結婚式に行きました。», which means "Yesterday, I went to a friend's wedding." Speaker B responds with «そうですか。どうでしたか。», meaning "I see. How was it?" Speaker A then answers with «とても美しかったです。それから、パーティーで友達に会いました。», meaning "It was very beautiful. Also, I met friends at the party." Speaker B follows up with «いいですね。パーティーは楽しかったですか。», which means "That's nice. Was the party fun?" When you practice, keep this order: news, question, answer, follow-up. If you swap roles, you change who reads each part, but you do not change the order of the lines.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided Exchange: Wedding News
Two learners practice the recorded exchange. One learner reads speaker A's lines and the other reads speaker B's lines. If you are alone, read both parts aloud and pause after each line.
Your task: Read the exchange in order. Speaker A begins with «昨日、友達の結婚式に行きました。». Speaker B replies with «そうですか。どうでしたか。». Speaker A answers with «とても美しかったです。それから、パーティーで友達に会いました。». Speaker B follows with «いいですね。パーティーは楽しかったですか。». After reading, switch roles and read it again without changing the order.
Choose the Right Reply
Imagine a friend has just told you about a wedding. You want to ask how it was. Then imagine a friend asks whether the party was fun.
Your task: For the first situation, choose the best recorded line to ask how the wedding was: «結婚式は美しかったです。», «結婚式はどうでしたか。», or «パーティーは楽しかったです。». For the second situation, choose the best recorded line to answer that the party was fun: «パーティーは楽しかったです。», «昨日、友達の結婚式に行きました。», or «そうですか。どうでしたか。». Say your choices aloud.
Recall with Correct Roles
Cover the recorded lines or look away. Imagine the same exchange about a wedding and party. You will recall who says each line and in what order.
Your task: Say the four lines of the exchange from memory. First, speaker A shares the wedding news with «昨日、友達の結婚式に行きました。». Then speaker B asks with «そうですか。どうでしたか。». Then speaker A answers with «とても美しかったです。それから、パーティーで友達に会いました。». Then speaker B follows with «いいですね。パーティーは楽しかったですか。». After you finish, swap roles and say the exchange again in the same order.
Common questions
Can I practice alone if I do not have a partner?
Yes. Read both speaker A and speaker B parts aloud, pausing after each line. You can also play the recordings and repeat after them. When you swap roles, you change who reads each part, but you keep the same order of lines.
What should I focus on when I practice these lines?
Focus on clear pronunciation and on keeping the order of the exchange. Notice which line asks about an event and which line describes it. Practice «結婚式はどうでしたか。» for asking how the wedding was, «結婚式は美しかったです。» for saying the wedding was beautiful, and «パーティーは楽しかったです。» for saying the party was fun.
