Japanese for Talking About Past Events: Weddings and Parties

Learn to describe past experiences like weddings and parties in Japanese using polite past-tense forms and adjectives. Build sentences such as 'The wedding was beautiful' and 'I had fun at the party.'

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

This lesson teaches how to describe a past wedding or party in Japanese. The recordings use polite past verb forms such as 会いました and past i-adjectives followed by です, such as 楽しかったです. You will describe how an event felt, say whom you met, and ask how someone’s wedding was.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a past wedding as beautiful using 結婚式は美しかったです。
    • say I had fun at a party using パーティーは楽しかったです。
    • ask and answer questions about past events using the polite past forms taught in the recordings.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    結婚式は美しかったです。

    The wedding was beautiful.

    Kekkonshiki wa utsukushikatta desu.

Use this to describe a wedding you attended. 美しかった is the past tense of the i-adjective 美しい (beautiful). Note that 美しい is a literary or formal word; in everyday conversation, people more often say きれいだった (was pretty/beautiful).

    パーティーは楽しかったです。

    The party was fun.

    Pātī wa tanoshikatta desu.

Use this to say you enjoyed a party. 楽しかった is the past tense of 楽しい (fun/enjoyable).

    私はパーティーで友達に会いました。

I met friends at the party.

Watashi wa pātī de tomodachi ni aimashita.

Use this to mention a specific action you did at a party. The particle で marks the location of an action, and に marks the person you met. 友達 can mean either 'a friend' or 'friends'; Japanese does not mark singular and plural on nouns.

    結婚式はどうでしたか。

    How was the wedding?

    Kekkonshiki wa dō deshita ka.

Ask this to inquire about someone's experience at a wedding. どうでしたか is the past tense of どうですか (how is it?).

    とても楽しかったです。

    It was very fun.

    Totemo tanoshikatta desu.

Add とても (very) to emphasize your enjoyment. This is a common response to questions about past events. In casual speech, とても is often replaced by すごく or めっちゃ.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To talk about past events, change i-adjectives from the present to past tense by replacing the final い with かった. For example, 楽しい (fun) becomes 楽しかった (was fun), and 美しい (beautiful) becomes 美しかった (was beautiful). Then add です for politeness. For verbs, use the polite past tense ending ました. For example, 会います (meet) becomes 会いました (met). Practice with: パーティーは楽しかったです。 (The party was fun.) and 友達に会いました。 (I met a friend / I met friends.)

    When to use it

Use these past tense forms when you are reflecting on events that have already happened, such as a wedding or party you attended. For example, after a wedding, you might say 結婚式は美しかったです。 (The wedding was beautiful.) If you want to ask someone about their experience, use どうでしたか (how was it?). Avoid using present tense for past events; saying 楽しいです would mean 'It is fun' (now), not 'It was fun.'

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    昨日、友達の結婚式に行きました。

Yesterday, I went to a friend's wedding.Kinō, tomodachi no kekkonshiki ni ikimashita.
    B

    そうですか。どうでしたか。

I see. How was it?Sō desu ka. Dō deshita ka.
    A

    とても美しかったです。それから、パーティーで友達に会いました。

It was very beautiful. Also, I met friends at the party.Totemo utsukushikatta desu. Sorekara, pātī de tomodachi ni aimashita.
    B

    いいですね。パーティーは楽しかったですか。

That's nice. Was the party fun?Ii desu ne. Pātī wa tanoshikatta desu ka.

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese, when talking about past events, it's common to use the plain past tense in casual conversation, but in polite settings, use the polite past tense (~ました, ~かったです). Weddings in Japan vary widely: some couples hold a traditional Shinto ceremony, some a Western-style chapel ceremony, and many combine elements of both, often followed by a reception (披露宴). When describing a wedding, 美しかった (beautiful) is appropriate for the ceremony or the bride's attire, while 楽しかった (fun) is more for the reception or party.

    One thing to watch for

Using the present tense to describe a past event, e.g., 結婚式は美しいです (The wedding is beautiful) when you mean it was beautiful.

Try this instead: Use the past tense: 結婚式は美しかったです。 Similarly, for verbs, use ~ました instead of ~ます. For example, パーティーで友達に会いました (I met friends at the party) not 会います。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'The party was fun' in Japanese?

    Show a sample answer

    パーティーは楽しかったです。

This uses the past tense of the i-adjective 楽しい (fun) → 楽しかった, plus です for politeness. Alternative: パーティーは楽しかった。 (plain form) is also correct in casual speech.

2Translate to Japanese: 'I went to a wedding.'

    Show a sample answer

    結婚式に行きました。

The verb 行く (go) becomes 行きました (went) in the polite past tense. The particle に marks the destination. You could also say 結婚式へ行きました, which is slightly more formal.

3Ask someone 'How was the wedding?' in Japanese.

    Show a sample answer

    結婚式はどうでしたか。

どうでしたか is the past tense of どうですか (how is it?). This is a polite way to ask about a past experience. In casual speech, you might say 結婚式はどうだった?

    Take this with you

To talk about past events like weddings and parties, use the past tense: i-adjectives change い → かった, and verbs change ~ます → ~ました. Practice with 楽しかったです and 美しかったです to share your experiences naturally.
