In a Japanese convenience store, staff often ask a few quick questions at the register. This workshop helps you recognize those questions and answer them naturally. You will hear the Japanese lines and see their English meanings, then practice short exchanges. Recordings are available for the taught lines, and you can check your answers with the keys provided.

    Understanding the Three Questions

At the register, staff may ask about a bag, heating your food, and payment method. The Japanese line «袋いりますか。» means 'Do you need a bag?' The line «温めますか。» means 'Shall I heat it up?' The line «お支払いはどうなさいますか。» means 'How would you like to pay?' These are yes/no or choice questions. Listen for the rising intonation. You do not need to add extra words. A short answer is fine.

    Answering Naturally

When you answer, keep it short. For a bag, you can say the Japanese line «いいえ、大丈夫です。», which means 'No, it's fine.' For heating and payment together, the recorded dialogue line is «はい、お願いします。カードでお願いします。», which means 'Yes, please. By card, please.' The first part answers the heating question, and the second part answers the payment question. You can also use «カードでお願いします。» alone when asked about payment, because the source phrase list gives it as 'By card, please.'

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Checking available voices…

    袋いりますか。

    Do you need a bag?

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Bag and Payment

You are at the register. The staff asks two questions. You will answer with the taught lines.

Your task: Staff says «袋いりますか。». You answer with «いいえ、大丈夫です。». Staff says «お支払いはどうなさいますか。». You answer with «カードでお願いします。». Read both roles aloud. Then swap roles and repeat.

    2

    Reply Comprehension: Heating and Payment

Listen to a customer reply that combines two answers. Then choose what the customer agreed to.

Your task: Staff says «温めますか。». Customer says «はい、お願いします。カードでお願いします。». Which two things did the customer agree to? Option A: a bag and heating. Option B: heating and paying by card. Option C: a bag and paying by card.

    3

    Recall with Correct Roles

Now recall the lines without looking at the English. You will play both staff and customer.

Your task: Staff asks about a bag using the Japanese line. Customer replies with the Japanese line meaning 'No, it's fine.' Staff asks about heating using the Japanese line. Customer replies with the Japanese line meaning 'Yes, please. By card, please.' Say all four lines aloud in order.

    Common questions

Can I answer with just one word?

Yes, short answers are common. For example, «いいえ、大丈夫です。» is a short reply meaning 'No, it's fine.' You can also use «カードでお願いします。» alone for payment. Keep your answer clear and polite.

What if I need both a bag and heating?

The recordings here show a no-bag reply «いいえ、大丈夫です。» and a yes-heating reply «はい、お願いします。カードでお願いします。». If you need a bag, you would answer the bag question differently, but this workshop only practices the taught lines. Use «はい、お願いします。カードでお願いします。» when you want heating and to pay by card.
