In this workshop you practise a short, natural music conversation in Japanese. You will say what music you like, ask another person what music they like, and answer a follow-up question about the kind of music you enjoy. The recordings give you the exact lines to use, so you can focus on speaking clearly and taking turns. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so check your answers with the keys provided.

    Saying What Music You Like

Start with a simple statement about your own taste. The recording «ポップがすきです。» means "I like pop." Use it when you want to name pop as a music you enjoy. The recording «ジャズがだいすきです。» means "I love jazz." The word for love is stronger than the word for like, so choose it when your feeling is strong. The recording «ロックもすきです。» means "I like rock too." The small word at the beginning adds "too," which is useful when you are adding another music to what you already said. Keep your voice calm and let the music word be clear.

    Asking and Answering About Music

To find out about the other person, use the question in «どんなおんがくがすきですか。», which means "What kind of music do you like?" Listen to the rhythm and copy it when you ask. A natural reply is «ポップがだいすきです。 , which means "I love pop. I'm a fan of Mrs. GREEN APPLE." Here the speaker names both a music and a group. After you hear someone's answer, you can respond with «いいですね。 , which means "Nice. I like jazz." This shows you listened and adds your own taste. If you want to know more, ask the follow-up in «そうですか。 , which means "Really? What kind of jazz do you like?" This keeps the conversation going by asking for a smaller category inside the music already mentioned.

    1

    Guided Music Exchange

Two people meet at a language exchange. Person A wants to know what music Person B likes. Person B answers and then asks Person A a follow-up question.

Your task: Read the conversation aloud with a partner or the audio. Person A says the question in «どんなおんがくがすきですか。». . Person A responds with «いいですね。 . Person B then asks the follow-up in «そうですか。 . After you finish, swap roles and read it again from the beginning.

    2

    Choose the Right Reply

You hear someone say the question in «どんなおんがくがすきですか。». You want to answer that you love pop and that you are a fan of Mrs. GREEN APPLE.

Your task: Choose the best reply from the options below, then say it aloud. . After you choose, explain in English why the other two options do not fit this situation.

    3

    Recall and Swap Roles

Two people are talking about music. One person asks the question, the other answers, the first responds, and the second asks a follow-up. You will recall the lines without looking, then swap roles.

Your task: With a partner, perform the conversation from memory. The person asking starts with the question in «どんなおんがくがすきですか。». The other person answers with «ポップがだいすきです。 . The first person responds with «いいですね。 . The other person asks the follow-up in «そうですか。 . Then swap roles and perform it again from the beginning.

    Common questions

Can I practise alone if I do not have a partner?

Yes. You can play both roles with the audio. Say the question in «どんなおんがくがすきですか。» yourself, then play the reply «ポップがだいすきです。 from the recording. After that, say the response «いいですね。 yourself, and play the follow-up «そうですか。 . There is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys in the exercises to check your order and your lines.

What is the difference between the like and love lines?

The recording «ポップがすきです。» means "I like pop," and «ジャズがだいすきです。» means "I love jazz." The love line shows a stronger feeling than the like line. Use the like line for a music you enjoy, and the love line when your feeling is strong. You can also add another music with «ロックもすきです。», which means "I like rock too."
