In this lesson you will learn to talk about music in Japanese: naming genres like ポップ and ジャズ, saying you love them, and asking a friend what they like. Japanese does not use articles like 'a' or 'the', and it does not change verbs for 'I' and 'you'. The key word is すき (suki, 'liked'), which works with the particle が. To say 'I love pop', you say ポップがすきです. For a stronger feeling, use だいすき (daisuki, 'very liked, love'). For artists, use ファン (fan, 'fan'). You will also learn どんな (donna, 'what kind of') to compare tastes naturally.

Misesu Gurīn Appuru ga fan desu
Use ファン for a specific artist or band. The artist name comes before がファンです. Mrs. GREEN APPLE is written ミセス・グリーン・アップル in Japanese.

The core pattern is [music word] + が + すきです. For example, ポップがすきです (I like pop) and ジャズがすきです (I like jazz). To make it stronger, replace すき with だいすき: ロックがだいすきです (I love rock). To talk about an artist, use ファン: あいみょんがファンです (I'm a fan of Aimyon). To ask a question, add か: どんなおんがくがすきですか (What kind of music do you like?). Japanese does not need 'a' or 'the' here.
When to use it
Use すきです for a normal, polite statement to classmates, teachers, or someone you just met. Use だいすきです when you feel strongly; it is still polite. Use ファンです for a specific singer or band, not for a whole genre. If a friend says ジャズがすきです, you can reply わたしもジャズがすきです (I like jazz too) or わたしはポップがすきです (I like pop) to compare tastes. In casual talk with close friends, すきだよ and だいすき are common.

In Japanese, stating a preference directly with すきです is normal and polite, but だいすきです can sound enthusiastic, so it fits friendly conversation. When someone shares a different taste, a short いいですね (That's nice) keeps the mood positive. Avoid saying きらい (dislike) about someone's favorite artist; it can sound harsh. If you want to soften a negative, say あまりすきじゃないです (I don't like it very much).
One thing to watch for
ポップをすきです。 (using を with すき)
Try this instead: Use が, not を, with すき: ポップがすきです。 The word すき behaves like 'liked' in Japanese, and the liked thing is marked by が. The same applies to だいすき and ファン: ジャズがだいすきです, あいみょんがファンです。
