In this workshop you will practice a short, realistic exchange at a store counter. You will learn how to ask where you can pick up a package, how to ask about pickup times and business hours, and how to understand a staff member's reply. The native examples come from the recordings, so you can hear natural Japanese and then try the same lines yourself. You do not need to invent new phrases. Instead, you will use the recorded lines in guided tasks, listen for key information, and then recall who says what. This is active speaking practice, so say each line out loud. If you are alone, play both roles: first the customer, then the staff member. There is no automatic scoring, so use the answer checks after each task to compare your choices and your speaking.

Asking Where to Pick Up a Package

Start with the customer's main question. The line «荷物はどこで受け取れますか。» means "Where can I pick up my package?" It is a direct question about the pickup place. A polite version adds an opening word: «すみません、荷物はどこで受け取れますか。» means "Excuse me, where can I pick up my package?" Use the polite version at a counter or when you stop a staff member. Say it slowly and clearly. The important part is the question word for "where" and the word for "package." Do not add extra details about the package unless you need to. After you ask, wait for the reply. In the recorded scene, the staff member answers with «この店のレジでお渡しします。何時までに受け取りに来られますか。», which means "We will hand it over at this store's register. By what time can you come to pick it up?" This tells you the pickup place and then asks about your time. Listen for the place first, then the time question.

Talking About Pickup Time and Business Hours

After the staff member asks about your time, you can give a time and then ask for the store's hours. The line «受け取りは何時までですか。» means "Until what time can I pick it up?" Use this when you want to know the deadline for pickup. The line «八時までなら大丈夫です。営業時間を教えてください。» means "Until eight o'clock is fine. Please tell me your business hours." This combines a time answer with a request for the store's hours. The line «営業時間を教えてください。» means "Please tell me your business hours." Use it when you only need the hours. The staff member's reply in the recording is «九時から二十時までです。不在票と身分証明書をお持ちください。», which means "We are open from nine to twenty o'clock. Please bring the delivery notice and identification." Listen for the opening time, the closing time, and the two things to bring. If you need a different delivery time, the line «再配達をお願いします。» means "Please redeliver it." Use it when you cannot pick up the package and want it sent again.

    Understanding the Staff Member's Reply

The staff member's reply gives you three important pieces of information: the pickup place, the business hours, and what to bring. In «この店のレジでお渡しします。何時までに受け取りに来られますか。», the pickup place is the store's register. In «九時から二十時までです。不在票と身分証明書をお持ちください。», the hours are from nine to twenty o'clock, and you should bring the delivery notice and identification. These are details from the recording, so use them as your model. When you listen, do not try to catch every word. First catch the place. Then catch the time. Then catch what to bring. If you miss something, you can ask again with «営業時間を教えてください。» for business hours or «受け取りは何時までですか。» for the pickup deadline. Keep your voice calm and friendly. At a real counter, you can show the delivery notice while you speak. That helps the staff member understand you quickly.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Counter Exchange

Imagine you are at a store counter with a delivery notice. You are the customer. A staff member is ready to help you.

Your task: Say the customer's opening line out loud. Use the polite version from the recordings. Then pause and imagine the staff member's reply. After that, say the line that asks for the store's business hours. Finally, say the line that gives a pickup time and asks for the business hours.

    2

    Choose the Right Reply

You hear a customer ask where to pick up a package. You are the staff member. You need to choose the correct reply from the recorded lines.

Your task: Listen to or read the customer's question. Then choose the staff reply that tells the pickup place and asks about the customer's time. Say your chosen line out loud. Next, choose the staff reply that gives the business hours and tells the customer what to bring. Say that line out loud too.

    3

    Recall the Conversation Roles

You have practiced both the customer and the staff member. Now recall the conversation without looking at the lines.

Your task: Say the customer's first question from memory. Then say the staff member's reply that gives the pickup place and asks about time. Next, say the customer's line that gives a time and asks for business hours. Finally, say the staff member's line that gives the hours and tells the customer what to bring.

    Common questions

What should I say first at the store counter?

Start with the polite question from the recordings. It means "Excuse me, where can I pick up my package?" This opening is clear and polite. After you ask, wait for the staff member's reply. The reply may tell you the pickup place and ask about your time.

How do I ask about the store's business hours?

Use the recorded line that means "Please tell me your business hours." You can also use the longer line that means "Until eight o'clock is fine. Please tell me your business hours." This gives a time and then asks for the hours. Listen for the opening and closing times in the reply.
