How to Ask Where to Pick Up a Package in Japanese

Learn to ask where and when you can pick up a package at a Japanese counter, konbini, or delivery office using 受け取る, 荷物, and 何時まで.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When a delivery notice (不在票, fuzai-hyō) is left in your mailbox, you need to ask where and when you can collect the package. This lesson teaches the core question 荷物はどこで受け取れますか (Nimotsu wa doko de uketoremasu ka) and the follow-up questions about hours that Japanese staff expect to hear. You will practice the potential form 受け取れる, the particle で for the pickup location, and time expressions such as 何時まで (until what time). The focus is only on picking up a package, not on sending one, so you can handle the counter conversation with confidence.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask where I can pick up my package.
    • ask what time the pickup counter closes.
    • understand and confirm the pickup location and hours.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    荷物はどこで受け取れますか。

Where can I pick up my package?

Nimotsu wa doko de uketoremasu ka.

The standard polite question at a delivery counter or on the phone. 荷物 (nimotsu) means package, どこで (doko de) marks the pickup place.

    再配達をお願いします。

    Please redeliver it.

    Sai-haitatsu o onegai shimasu.

Use this when you missed the first delivery and want the package brought again. 再配達 (sai-haitatsu) is the standard term on the 不在票.

    受け取りは何時までですか。

Until what time can I pick it up?

Uketori wa nanji made desu ka.

Ask this at the counter or by phone to learn the closing time for pickup. 何時まで (nanji made) means until what time.

    営業時間を教えてください。

Please tell me your business hours.

    Eigyō jikan o oshiete kudasai.

A polite way to ask for the full opening hours, useful at a 営業所 (eigyōsho, delivery office) or convenience store.

    ここで受け取れますか。

Can I pick it up here?

    Koko de uketoremasu ka.

Confirm that this specific counter or store is the correct pickup point before waiting in line.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The key pattern is [place] で + 受け取れますか. 受け取れます (uketoremasu) is the potential form of 受け取る (uketoru, to receive), so it means 'can receive/pick up.' For example, コンビニで受け取れますか (Konbini de uketoremasu ka) asks 'Can I pick it up at a convenience store?' and 営業所で受け取れますか (Eigyōsho de uketoremasu ka) asks about the delivery office. To ask about time, replace the place with 何時まで: 何時まで受け取れますか (Nanji made uketoremasu ka), 'Until what time can I pick it up?'

    When to use it

Use 荷物はどこで受け取れますか when you have a delivery notice and do not know the pickup point. If the staff names a place, confirm it with ここで受け取れますか. When you already know the place but not the hours, ask 受け取りは何時までですか. At a convenience store, staff may say レジでお渡しします (Reji de owatashi shimasu, 'We will hand it over at the register'), so listen for レジ (reji). If the package is too large for the store, they may direct you to the 営業所, so 営業所はどこですか (Eigyōsho wa doko desu ka) is a useful follow-up.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、荷物はどこで受け取れますか。

Excuse me, where can I pick up my package?Sumimasen, nimotsu wa doko de uketoremasu ka.
    B

    この店のレジでお渡しします。何時までに受け取りに来られますか。

We will hand it over at this store's register. By what time can you come to pick it up?Kono mise no reji de owatashi shimasu. Nanji made ni uketori ni koraremasu ka.
    A

    八時までなら大丈夫です。営業時間を教えてください。

Until eight o'clock is fine. Please tell me your business hours.Hachi-ji made nara daijōbu desu. Eigyō jikan o oshiete kudasai.
    B

    九時から二十時までです。不在票と身分証明書をお持ちください。

We are open from nine to twenty o'clock. Please bring the delivery notice and identification.Ku-ji kara nijū-ji made desu. Fuzai-hyō to mibun shōmeisho o omochi kudasai.

A little context goes a long way

At Japanese counters, すみません (sumimasen) is the natural opener before a question, and お願いします (onegai shimasu) softens requests such as 再配達をお願いします. Staff may use keigo, for example お渡しします (owatashi shimasu) instead of 渡します, so do not be surprised if the verb sounds longer. Bringing the 不在票 and photo ID is standard, and convenience store pickup is usually limited to smaller items; larger packages often go to the 営業所.

    One thing to watch for

Using 取りに行きますか (tori ni ikimasu ka) to ask 'Can I pick it up?'

Try this instead: 取りに行きますか means 'Are you going to go pick it up?' and asks about someone's plan, not permission. Use the potential form 受け取れますか: ここで受け取れますか (Koko de uketoremasu ka) means 'Can I pick it up here?' If you want to say you will go and get it, say 取りに行きます (tori ni ikimasu) without か.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Ask a staff member where you can pick up your package.

    Show a sample answer

    荷物はどこで受け取れますか。

This uses 荷物 (package), どこで (where), and the potential form 受け取れますか. 荷物はどこで受け取れますでしょうか is a more formal alternative.

2Ask until what time you can pick up your package.

    Show a sample answer

    受け取りは何時までですか。

受け取り (uketori) is the noun form of 'receiving,' and 何時まで asks 'until what time.' 何時まで受け取れますか is also correct and slightly more direct.

3You missed the first delivery. Ask for redelivery politely.

    Show a sample answer

    再配達をお願いします。

再配達 (sai-haitatsu) is the standard term for redelivery, and お願いします makes the request polite. 再配達をお願いできますか is a softer question form.

    Take this with you

Remember the core question 荷物はどこで受け取れますか for the pickup point, and 受け取りは何時までですか for the hours. Bring your 不在票 and ID, and use すみません to open the conversation politely.
