In this workshop you will practice polite Japanese questions about parking. You will learn how to ask whether a parking lot exists, whether it is free, whether it is included in the price, and whether you need a reservation. You will also hear short answers and practice understanding them. All native examples come from the recordings, so you can listen and repeat exactly what you hear.
Asking if parking exists
The most general way to ask about parking is «駐車場はありますか。». This means "Is there a parking lot?" You can use it at hotels, shops, restaurants, and rental offices. If you want to ask specifically about free parking, use «無料駐車場はありますか。». This means "Is there free parking?" The word for free is included, so the question is narrower. When you speak, keep your voice polite and rising at the end. Listen to the recording and repeat. Then imagine you are at a hotel front desk and ask the question.
Asking about cost and reservations
If you want to know whether parking costs extra, ask «駐車場は料金に含まれていますか。». This means "Is parking included in the price?" Use it when you are checking the total cost. If you want to know whether you must book a space in advance, ask «予約は必要ですか。». This means "Is a reservation necessary?" Many parking lots in Japan require advance booking, so this question is useful. Practice both questions slowly, then a little faster. Imagine you are renting an apartment and want to know about parking fees and booking.
Understanding short answers
When you ask about parking, you may hear a short answer. In one scene, a person asks «すみません、駐車場はありますか。» and the other person replies «はい、あります。無料駐車場もあります。». The reply means "Yes, there is. There is also free parking." In another scene, a person asks «駐車場は料金に含まれていますか。» and the other person replies «いいえ、一泊五百円です。予約は必要ですか。». The reply means "No, it is 500 yen per night. Is a reservation necessary?" Notice that the second reply includes a question back to you. Listen carefully to the whole answer. Practice by playing the recordings and responding as if you were the other person.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Your task: Play the recording for «駐車場はありますか。» and repeat it aloud as the customer. Then play the recording for «はい、あります。無料駐車場もあります。» and repeat it aloud as the front desk clerk. Next, play the recording for «無料駐車場はありますか。» and repeat it aloud as the customer.
Reply comprehension: choose the correct meaning
You will hear a short reply about parking. Read the three choices and choose the best meaning.
Your task: Listen to the recording for «はい、あります。無料駐車場もあります。». Does it mean: (a) There is no parking. (b) Yes, there is parking, and there is also free parking. (c) Parking is 500 yen per night. Choose the correct answer.
Recall and role-play: ask and answer
You will play both roles. First, you are the customer asking about parking. Then you are the staff member answering.
Your task: Play the recording for «すみません、駐車場はありますか。» and repeat it as the customer. Then play the recording for «はい、あります。無料駐車場もあります。» and repeat it as the staff member. Common questions
What is the difference between asking if parking exists and asking if it is free?
The question «駐車場はありますか。» asks generally if there is a parking lot. The question «無料駐車場はありますか。» asks specifically if there is free parking. Use the first when you just want to know if parking is available. Use the second when you want to avoid paying for parking.
How do I know if I need a reservation for parking?
You can ask «予約は必要ですか。». This means "Is a reservation necessary?" Listen to the answer carefully. In the recording for «いいえ、一泊五百円です。予約は必要ですか。», the staff member asks this question back to the customer, so you may hear it in a reply as well.
