In this workshop you practise a short, natural exchange about a trip and the food someone ate there. You will first follow a guided conversation, then choose the right reply to a question, and finally recall the exchange with the roles swapped. Each native line is explained in English before you use it, so you always know what you are saying.

Asking about a trip and reacting to the answer

A simple way to open the conversation is to ask how the trip was. The line «Salut ! Comment était ton voyage en Italie ?» means "Hi! How was your trip to Italy?" — a friendly greeting plus a question about the trip. The reply «C'était super ! La nourriture était incroyable. J'ai mangé une pizza délicieuse.» means "It was great! The food was amazing. I ate a delicious pizza." It gives a positive reaction, then adds a detail about the food and one specific dish. Notice the order: first the general reaction, then the food comment, then the example. When you speak, keep the same order so your listener can follow easily. Say the greeting and question with a rising, interested tone, and let the reply start with a clear positive word before you add details.

Asking a follow-up and confirming what you liked

After the first reply, a natural follow-up asks about the food itself. The line «Tu as aimé la cuisine italienne ?» means "Did you like Italian food?" — a yes or no question about the food. The answer «Oui, j'ai adoré ! Nous avons aussi goûté des pâtes fraîches.» means "Yes, I loved it! We also tasted fresh pasta." It confirms with "Yes", adds a strong positive feeling, and then gives another food example with "also". The separate line «La nourriture en Italie était incroyable.» means "The food in Italy was amazing." and «J'ai mangé une pizza délicieuse.» means "I ate a delicious pizza." These two lines give the food comment and the dish example on their own, so you can hear each part clearly. The line «Nous avons goûté des pâtes fraîches.» means "We tasted fresh pasta." and «C'était vraiment bon !» means "It was really good!" — another food example and a short positive reaction. Use these lines to build your own answers in the same order: reaction, food comment, example.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Salut ! Comment était ton voyage en Italie ?

Hi! How was your trip to Italy?
    B

C'était super ! La nourriture était incroyable. J'ai mangé une pizza délicieuse.

It was great! The food was amazing. I ate a delicious pizza.
    A

Tu as aimé la cuisine italienne ?

    Did you like Italian food?
    B

Oui, j'ai adoré ! Nous avons aussi goûté des pâtes fraîches.

Yes, I loved it! We also tasted fresh pasta.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask, answer, follow up

Two people talk about a trip to Italy. Person A asks about the trip and then asks about the food. Person B answers with a reaction and a food example. Read both roles aloud, then swap.

Your task: Read the exchange in order. Person A says «Salut ! Comment était ton voyage en Italie ?» then «Tu as aimé la cuisine italienne ?». Person B says «C'était super ! La nourriture était incroyable. J'ai mangé une pizza délicieuse.» then «Oui, j'ai adoré ! Nous avons aussi goûté des pâtes fraîches.». After one full round, swap roles and read it again. Keep the same order: question, answer, follow-up question, answer.

    2

    Choose the right reply

Person A asks a question about the food. You choose the reply that matches the question and gives a suitable answer.

Your task: Person A says «Tu as aimé la cuisine italienne ?». Which reply fits: «Oui, j'ai adoré ! Nous avons aussi goûté des pâtes fraîches.» or «Salut ! Comment était ton voyage en Italie ?»? Say your choice aloud, then say the full reply. After that, Person A says «Salut ! Comment était ton voyage en Italie ?». Which reply fits: «C'était super ! La nourriture était incroyable. J'ai mangé une pizza délicieuse.» or «Tu as aimé la cuisine italienne ?»? Say your choice aloud, then say the full reply.

    3

Recall the exchange with roles swapped

Cover the lines. Person A now gives the answers and Person B asks the questions. You rebuild the exchange from memory in the same chronological order.

Your task: Person B starts with the trip question, then Person A answers. Person B asks the food follow-up, then Person A answers. Use the lines you practised. After one round, swap back and repeat.

    Common questions

Can I practise alone if there is no partner?

Yes. Play the audio for one role and speak the other role aloud, then replay and swap. You can also read both roles yourself, but keep the order: question first, then answer, then follow-up question, then answer. There is no automatic assessment, so check your own recording against the answer keys.

What should I focus on when I speak?

Focus on the order and the meaning. Start with the greeting and trip question, give a clear positive reaction in the answer, then add one food example. In the follow-up, ask about the food, and in the final answer confirm with a clear yes before adding another example. Keep your tone interested and friendly.
