French for Elementary Learners: Tell Stories About Past Food Experiences

Learn to use the passé composé to say 'The food in Italy was amazing' and share past travel food stories in French.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about food you ate on a past trip using the passé composé, the main past tense in spoken French. You will focus on the specific skill of telling a short story about a past trip, for example: 'La nourriture en Italie était incroyable.' This differs from making travel plans because you are reflecting on what already happened. You will practice key phrases, a useful pattern with the verb être and avoir, and a short dialogue. By the end, you will be able to say what you ate, how it was, and react to a friend's story.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that food on a past trip was amazing using the passé composé and adjectives.
    • ask and answer simple questions about what someone ate on a past trip.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

La nourriture en Italie était incroyable.

The food in Italy was amazing.

    lah noo-ree-TYUR ahn ee-tah-LEE ay-TEH ahn-kree-AHB-luh

Use était (imperfect) to describe how the food was in general, not a single meal.

    J'ai mangé une pizza délicieuse.

    I ate a delicious pizza.

    zhay mahn-ZHAY ewn peet-ZAH day-lee-SYUHZ

Use j'ai mangé (passé composé with avoir) for a completed action: eating one pizza.

Nous avons goûté des pâtes fraîches.

    We tasted fresh pasta.

    noo-zah-vohn goo-TAY day paht FRESH

Use nous avons goûté for a shared past action. In everyday speech, on a goûté is also common.

    C'était vraiment bon !

    It was really good!

    say-TEH vray-MAHN bohn

A natural reaction to food. C'était is the imperfect of être, used for descriptions.

Tu as aimé la cuisine italienne ?

    Did you like Italian food?

    tew ah eh-MAY lah kwee-ZEEN ee-tah-LYEN

Use tu as aimé to ask a friend about a past experience. For formal, use vous avez aimé.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To tell a past food story, combine the passé composé for actions and the imperfect for descriptions. For example: 'J'ai mangé une pizza' (action) and 'Elle était délicieuse' (description). The passé composé uses avoir or être plus a past participle: j'ai mangé, nous avons goûté. The imperfect describes how things were: c'était bon, la nourriture était incroyable. Use était for 'was' when describing food in general. Note that adjectives agree: 'une pizza délicieuse' (feminine), 'un plat délicieux' (masculine).

    When to use it

Use the passé composé when you say what you did once or a specific number of times: 'J'ai mangé trois glaces.' Use the imperfect when you describe the situation, the food, or how it was: 'La nourriture était incroyable.' In conversation, you often mix both: 'J'ai goûté des pâtes. C'était vraiment bon !' To ask a friend, use 'Tu as aimé... ?' For a more formal situation, use 'Vous avez aimé... ?' Remember that in spoken French, 'on' often replaces 'nous': 'On a goûté des pâtes' means 'We tasted pasta.'

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In France, food is a common topic in friendly conversation, and reacting with enthusiasm like 'C'était vraiment bon !' is normal. However, avoid overusing 'incroyable' in formal contexts; 'très bon' or 'excellent' may sound more natural. In Quebec, you might hear 'C'était écœurant !' to mean 'It was amazing!' in informal speech, but this is regional and can be vulgar in France. Stick to standard French for safety.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'La nourriture en Italie a été incroyable' instead of 'était incroyable'.

Try this instead: Use the imperfect 'était' to describe how the food was in general. 'A été' is possible but emphasizes a completed event and sounds less natural for a general description. Say: 'La nourriture en Italie était incroyable.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I ate a delicious pizza' in French?

    Show a sample answer

    J'ai mangé une pizza délicieuse.

This uses the passé composé with avoir (j'ai mangé) and the adjective délicieuse agrees with the feminine noun pizza. You could also say 'J'ai mangé une pizza excellente.'

2Which tense would you use to describe that the food was amazing in general?

    Show a sample answer

The imperfect: 'La nourriture était incroyable.'

The imperfect describes a past situation or state. 'A été' is possible but focuses on a completed event, which is less natural for a general description.

3How would you ask a friend 'Did you like Italian food?'

    Show a sample answer

Tu as aimé la cuisine italienne ?

This uses the passé composé with avoir (tu as aimé) and the informal tu. For formal, use 'Vous avez aimé la cuisine italienne ?'

    Take this with you

Use the passé composé for actions (j'ai mangé) and the imperfect for descriptions (c'était bon). Say 'La nourriture en Italie était incroyable' to reflect on a past trip.
