In this workshop you will practice a short hotel conversation in French. You will learn how to make a polite request, ask if a room is available, and check the room type. You will also hear a full exchange between a guest and a staff member. Each French example is a recording you can listen to and repeat. You can play both roles: the guest and the staff member. Use the answer keys in each exercise to check yourself.

    Making a polite request

Start with a polite request. The phrase «Je voudrais réserver une chambre pour deux nuits.» means "I would like to book a room for two nights." The key words are "je voudrais" (I would like), "réserver" (to book), "une chambre" (a room), and "deux nuits" (two nights). Using "je voudrais" is softer than "je veux" (I want), which can sound blunt. Say the line slowly, then repeat it at a natural speed. Keep the liaison in "deux nuits" smooth: duh NWEE. When you can say it comfortably, move to the next section.

    Checking availability and room type

After your request, ask if a room is available. The question «Avez-vous une chambre libre ?» means "Do you have a room available?" Here "libre" means available or free, not free of charge. To confirm who the room is for, use «C'est une chambre pour une personne ou pour deux ?», which means "Is it a room for one person or for two?" The words "une personne" mean one person, and "deux" means two. If you want to know the cost, ask «Quel est le prix par nuit ?»: "What is the price per night?" This asks for the nightly rate only. Practice each question aloud, then try them in order: request, availability, room type, price.

A full exchange: guest and staff

Now listen to a complete exchange. The guest begins with «Bonjour, je voudrais réserver une chambre pour deux nuits.»: "Hello, I would like to book a room for two nights." The staff member replies with «Bonjour. Pour quelles dates, s'il vous plaît ?»: "Hello. For which dates, please?" The guest answers with «Pour le 10 et le 11 juin. Avez-vous une chambre libre ?»: "For the 10th and 11th of June. Do you have a room available?" The staff member responds with «Oui, nous avons une chambre double. Quel type de chambre souhaitez-vous ?»: "Yes, we have a double room. What type of room would you like?" Notice the roles: the guest asks for a room and gives dates; the staff member asks for dates and confirms the room type. You can play both roles with the audio. Repeat each line, then try the full exchange without looking at the text.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Bonjour, je voudrais réserver une chambre pour deux nuits.

Hello, I would like to book a room for two nights.
    B

Bonjour. Pour quelles dates, s'il vous plaît ?

    Hello. For which dates, please?
    A

Pour le 10 et le 11 juin. Avez-vous une chambre libre ?

For the 10th and 11th of June. Do you have a room available?
    B

Oui, nous avons une chambre double. Quel type de chambre souhaitez-vous ?

Yes, we have a double room. What type of room would you like?
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: request a room

You are a guest at a hotel reception. You want to book a room for two nights. Use the polite phrase from the recordings.

Your task: Say «Je voudrais réserver une chambre pour deux nuits.», which means "I would like to book a room for two nights." Then ask if a room is available with «Avez-vous une chambre libre ?». Use the two recordings you learned in the first two sections.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the correct response

You hear a staff member say the line that means "Yes, we have a double room. What type of room would you like?" You need to understand the reply and choose what to say next.

Your task: Listen to the staff reply from the full exchange. Then choose the best guest response: (a) ask the price per night, or (b) ask if the room is for one person or two. Say your chosen question aloud.

    3

Recall and role swap: full conversation

You will now recall the full exchange without looking at the text. You can play both roles: guest and staff member.

Your task: First, play the guest. Say the opening request, answer the staff question about dates, and ask if a room is available. Then play the staff member. Ask for dates and confirm the room type. Use only the lines from the recordings.

    Common questions

What does "libre" mean in the question about a room?

"Libre" means available or free in the sense of not occupied. It does not mean free of charge. So the question asks whether a room is available, not whether it costs nothing.

Can I use these phrases if I am the staff member?

Yes. The recordings include both guest and staff lines. You can play either role with the audio. The staff lines ask for dates and confirm the room type. The guest lines make the request and ask about availability.
