In this workshop you practise short French exchanges about renting a car. You will ask where you can rent a car, say that you would like to rent a car, and ask which documents are required. You will also hear a reply that names a place and a reply that names two documents. Each native line is played from the recording, so you can copy the rhythm and then use the same lines in a simple role play.
Asking where and saying what you want
Start with the question for a location. «Où puis-je louer une voiture ?» means "Where can I rent a car?" Use it when you are speaking to someone who can point you to a place. If you prefer to state your wish first, use «Je voudrais louer une voiture.», which means "I would like to rent a car." Both lines are polite and short, so they are easy to repeat aloud. Listen once, then say the line with the recording. Keep your voice calm and let the last part of the question rise slightly. When you can say both without reading, you are ready to add the document question.
Asking about documents and understanding the reply
The next question asks what you must show. «Quels documents faut-il ?» means "What documents are required?" The answer in the recording is «Il faut un permis de conduire et une carte de crédit.», which means "You need a driver's license and a credit card." Notice that the reply names two things, so listen for both. In the longer scene, the first speaker greets and asks the location question: «Bonjour, où puis-je louer une voiture ?». The other speaker answers with a place: «Vous pouvez louer une voiture à l'agence de location près de la gare.», meaning "You can rent a car at the rental agency near the train station." Then the first speaker asks the document question again: «Quels documents faut-il ?». The second speaker gives the same two documents: «Il faut un permis de conduire et une carte de crédit.». Practise the question until you can ask it clearly, then listen for the two items in the answer.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided exchange: ask and answer
You are a traveller speaking to a staff member at a station. The staff member can tell you where to rent a car. Read your part aloud, then play the recording for the other part.
Your task: Say the greeting and the location question from the recording. Then play the staff member's answer. After that, ask the document question from the recording. Finally, play the answer about documents.
Reply comprehension: choose the matching answer
You will hear a question and then choose the reply that fits. The replies come from the recordings, so listen for the place or for the two documents.
Your task: Question 1: the speaker asks where to rent a car. Choose the matching reply: (a) «Vous pouvez louer une voiture à l'agence de location près de la gare.» or (b) «Il faut un permis de conduire et une carte de crédit.» Question 2: the speaker asks what documents are required. Choose the matching reply: (a) «Vous pouvez louer une voiture à l'agence de location près de la gare.» or (b) «Il faut un permis de conduire et une carte de crédit.»
Recall with correct roles
Work with the longer scene. One person is the traveller who greets and asks questions. The other person is the staff member who answers with a place and with documents.
Your task: Without reading, say the traveller's greeting and location question. Then say the staff member's answer about the place. Next, say the traveller's document question. Finally, say the staff member's answer with both documents. If you are alone, play the recording for one role and speak the other role.
Common questions
Do I need to understand every word in the recordings?
No. Focus on the main job of each line: asking where, saying what you want, asking about documents, or answering with a place or with documents. Use the English meanings given in the sections to check yourself, then repeat the recorded line aloud.
Can I practise alone if I cannot do a role play with someone?
Yes. Play a recording for one role, then speak the other role yourself. You can also play both recorded parts and repeat each line. There is no automatic assessment, so use the success criteria in each exercise to check your own speaking.
