    kohn-byen sa koot par zhoor

Ask about the daily rate. 'Par jour' means per day.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask 'Where can I...?' in French, use 'Où puis-je...?' followed by the infinitive. For example, 'Où puis-je louer une voiture ?' means 'Where can I rent a car?'. You can replace 'louer une voiture' with other actions: 'Où puis-je acheter un billet ?' (Where can I buy a ticket?). In less formal situations, you can also use 'Où est-ce que je peux...?' which means the same but is more common in spoken French. For example, 'Où est-ce que je peux louer une voiture ?' Both are correct; 'puis-je' is more formal.

    When to use it

Use 'Où puis-je louer une voiture ?' when you need to find a rental agency. It is polite and works in most situations. If you are already at an agency and want to rent, say 'Je voudrais louer une voiture.' To ask about requirements, use 'Quels documents faut-il ?' This is neutral and direct. When you need to specify the type of car, you can say 'une voiture automatique' (an automatic car) or 'une voiture manuelle' (a manual car). In France, most rental cars have manual transmission, so if you need an automatic, ask specifically: 'Avez-vous des voitures automatiques ?'

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In France, car rental agencies often require a driver's license held for at least one year and a credit card in the driver's name. Debit cards may not be accepted. In Quebec, the term 'location de voitures' is standard, and requirements are similar. In some African French-speaking countries, you may need an international driving permit. Always check local rules in advance.

    One thing to watch for

Using 'Je veux louer une voiture' to mean 'I want to rent a car.'

Try this instead: 'Je veux' is direct and can sound abrupt. Use 'Je voudrais louer une voiture' for polite requests. For example, 'Je voudrais louer une voiture pour deux jours.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Where can I rent a car?' in French?

    Show a sample answer

Où puis-je louer une voiture ?

This is the standard polite form. You can also say 'Où est-ce que je peux louer une voiture ?' in less formal contexts.

2What documents are typically required to rent a car in French-speaking countries?

    Show a sample answer

Un permis de conduire et une carte de crédit.

A driver's license and a credit card are commonly required. Some agencies may also ask for a passport or an international driving permit.

3How would you say 'I would like to rent an automatic car' in French?

    Show a sample answer

Je voudrais louer une voiture automatique.

This uses the polite 'je voudrais' and specifies 'automatique'. For manual, say 'une voiture manuelle'.

    Take this with you

Use 'Où puis-je louer une voiture ?' to ask where to rent a car, and 'Je voudrais louer une voiture' to state your request politely. Always ask about documents with 'Quels documents faut-il ?' and be prepared to show a driver's license and credit card.
