When someone greets you with a friendly check-in, you can answer with a short, natural phrase and then return the question. In this workshop you will practise a guided exchange, choose the right reply for what you hear, and then recall the whole exchange with the roles swapped. Each native line is played from the recordings, so listen first, then speak along.

    Answering the check-in

A friendly check-in often starts with a question about how you have been. You can answer with a short phrase. «挺好的,谢谢!» means you are doing well and you are thanking the person. «还行。» means things are okay, without saying they are great. «今天有点累。» means you are somewhat tired today. These three answers are all normal and polite. Choose the one that matches how you feel, then say it clearly. After your answer, you can return the question with «你呢?», which means you are asking the other person the same thing.

    Hearing the full exchange

In a longer exchange, one person asks the check-in question and the other answers and returns it. «最近怎么样?» is the opening question about how you have been lately. «挺好的,谢谢!你呢?» answers that things are pretty good, gives thanks, and asks the question back. «还行,今天有点累。» answers that things are not bad but that the speaker is a bit tired today. «那早点休息吧。» responds to that tiredness by suggesting an early rest. Notice that the reply can combine two short answers, and that the follow-up responds to what was just said.

    Keeping the exchange going

A short answer plus a return question keeps the conversation moving. If you answer with «挺好的,谢谢!», you can add «你呢?» to ask the other person back. If you feel tired, «今天有点累。» is enough on its own, and the other person may respond with «那早点休息吧。». When you hear «最近怎么样?», you know the other person is asking about you, so an answer such as «还行。» fits. Listen for whether the line is a question or an answer, and respond with the matching kind of line.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided exchange: answer and return

You are meeting a friend who has not seen you for a while. Your friend opens with a check-in question. You will answer and then ask the same question back.

Your task: Play «最近怎么样?» as your friend's opening line. Reply with «挺好的,谢谢!» and then add «你呢?». Say both parts in order: first your answer, then your return question. Repeat the pair until it feels smooth.

    2

    Reply comprehension: choose what fits

You will hear a native line and choose the reply that fits it. The lines come from the recordings, so listen for whether you hear a question or an answer.

Your task: Play «挺好的,谢谢!你呢?». It answers that things are pretty good, gives thanks, and asks the question back. Choose your reply: A) «还行。» or B) «那早点休息吧。». Then play «还行,今天有点累。». It says things are not bad but a bit tired today. Choose your reply: A) «那早点休息吧。» or B) «你呢?».

    3

    Recall and swap roles

You will rebuild the full exchange from memory, then swap roles. The order of the exchange stays the same: question, answer, follow-up.

Your task: First, play the role of the person who asks. Say «最近怎么样?», then play «挺好的,谢谢!你呢?» as the reply. Next, play the role of the person who answers. Play «最近怎么样?» again, then say «还行,今天有点累。» yourself, and finish by playing «那早点休息吧。» as the follow-up.

    Common questions

Can I use the same answer every time someone asks how I have been?

You can, but the recordings give you three different answers. «挺好的,谢谢!» says you are doing well and gives thanks, «还行。» says things are okay, and «今天有点累。» says you are a bit tired today. Pick the one that matches how you feel, then return the question with «你呢?» if you want to keep the exchange going.

What should I say after someone tells me they are tired?

In the recordings, the follow-up to a tired answer is «那早点休息吧。», which suggests getting some rest early. It responds directly to the tiredness in «还行,今天有点累。». If the other person instead answers with «挺好的,谢谢!你呢?» and asks the question back, you can answer with a short reply such as «还行。».
