How to Say You're Fine in Mandarin Chinese: Casual Replies and Returning the Question

Learn beginner Mandarin ways to answer 你好吗? with more than 我很好, including 挺好的, 还行, and 有点累, and how to ask 你呢? back in casual conversation.

Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In Mandarin, 你好吗? (nǐ hǎo ma?) is a real question, but it is not the default casual greeting between friends. When someone does ask how you are, answering only 我很好 (wǒ hěn hǎo) can sound like a textbook line. This lesson teaches beginner-friendly, natural replies: 挺好的 (tǐng hǎo de), 还行 (hái xíng), 有点累 (yǒu diǎn lèi), and how to return the question with 你呢? (nǐ ne?). You will also learn why 您 (nín) changes the tone and when casual replies are appropriate.

    By the end, you can…

    • answer 你好吗? with at least three natural replies beyond 我很好.
    • return the question with 你呢? and keep a casual exchange going.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    挺好的,谢谢!

    Pretty good, thanks!

    tǐng hǎo de, xiè xie

A warm, casual reply. 挺好的 means 'pretty good'; 谢谢 is often pronounced lightly, with the second syllable neutral.

    还行。

    Not bad. / It's okay.

    hái xíng

A relaxed, slightly modest answer. It does not mean you are excited, just that things are acceptable.

    今天有点累。

    A bit tired today.

    jīn tiān yǒu diǎn lèi

Use 有点 before an adjective to mean 'a little' or 'a bit'. 今天 means 'today'.

    你呢?

What about you? / And you?

    nǐ ne

The easiest way to return the question. 呢 makes it a follow-up question about the other person.

    最近怎么样?

    How have you been lately?

    zuì jìn zěn me yàng

A common casual question. 最近 means 'lately'; 怎么样 asks 'how is it going?'

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A simple casual reply often follows this shape: [time] + [degree word] + [feeling]. For example, 今天有点累 (jīn tiān yǒu diǎn lèi) means 'I'm a bit tired today.' 今天 sets the time, 有点 softens the feeling, and 累 is the adjective. You can swap 累 for other feelings: 今天有点忙 (jīn tiān yǒu diǎn máng) means 'I'm a bit busy today.' To make a positive reply, use 挺好的 (tǐng hǎo de) or 还不错 (hái bú cuò). After your answer, add 你呢? (nǐ ne?) to return the question.

    When to use it

Use 挺好的,谢谢! with friends, classmates, or people you already know. Use 还行 when you do not want to sound too positive or too negative; it is common and polite in casual talk. Use 今天有点累 when you are actually tired, but keep your tone light. If you are speaking to a teacher, a boss, or an older person you do not know well, 您 (nín) is the polite 'you.' A formal reply can be 我很好,谢谢。您呢? (wǒ hěn hǎo, xiè xie. nín ne?). Do not use 您 with close friends; it creates distance.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In many Mandarin conversations, 你好吗? can sound slightly formal or textbook-like. Friends often greet each other with 最近怎么样? or simply 吃了吗? in some regions, though 吃了吗? is not a real invitation to eat. A short answer plus 你呢? keeps the exchange friendly and balanced.

    One thing to watch for

Answering only 我很好 to every question, even when you are tired or the conversation is casual.

Try this instead: Match your answer to the situation. If you are a bit tired, say 今天有点累 (jīn tiān yǒu diǎn lèi). If things are okay, say 还行 (hái xíng). Then return the question with 你呢? (nǐ ne?).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
