Spanish for Talking About Friends: Expressing Loyalty and Long Friendship
Learn elementary Latin American Spanish phrases to describe close friends, say someone is always there for you, and express how long you've been friends.

Friendships are chosen bonds, so Spanish has specific ways to talk about loyalty, time, and appreciation that differ from how you describe family. In this lesson you will learn set phrases like "siempre está para mí" (she's always there for me) and "somos amigos desde hace años" (we've been friends for years). You will also practice saying why a friend matters to you using "es importante para mí" and "valoro que...". The focus is on real, everyday Latin American Spanish you can use in conversation.
By the end, you can…
- say that a friend is always there for me using a natural Spanish phrase.
- say how long I have been friends with someone using "desde hace" or "llevamos... años".
- express why a friend is important to me with simple value statements.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Ella siempre está para mí.
She's always there for me.
EH-yah SYEM-preh es-TAH PAH-rah MEE
Use "estar para alguien" for emotional support or availability, not physical location. Change "ella" to "él" or a name as needed.
Somos amigos desde hace muchos años.
We've been friends for many years.
SOH-mohs ah-MEE-gohs DES-deh AH-seh MOO-chohs AH-nyohs
"Desde hace" plus a time period means "for" in the sense of duration up to now. For two women, say "amigas".
Llevamos diez años de amistad.
We've had a ten-year friendship. / We've been friends for ten years.
yeh-VAH-mohs DYES AH-nyohs deh ah-mees-TAHD
"Llevar" plus time is a very common Latin American way to express duration. Replace "diez" with any number.
Es una persona muy importante para mí.
She is a very important person to me.
es OO-nah per-SOH-nah MOOY eem-por-TAHN-teh PAH-rah MEE
A neutral, sincere way to express value. Use "un" for a male friend: "Es un amigo muy importante para mí".
Valoro que siempre me escucha.
I value that she always listens to me.
bah-LOH-roh keh SYEM-preh meh es-KOO-chah
"Valorar que" + verb lets you name a specific quality you appreciate. You can also say "Me gusta que..." for a softer tone.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
To talk about how long a friendship has lasted, Spanish commonly uses "desde hace" or the verb "llevar". Examples: "Somos amigos desde hace cinco años" and "Llevamos cinco años de amistad". Both mean the friendship started five years ago and continues now. Do not use the present tense alone with "por" for this meaning; "por cinco años" sounds like a completed block of time, not an ongoing bond.
When to use it
Use "siempre está para mí" when you want to emphasize emotional support, especially during difficult times. Use "es importante para mí" or "valoro que..." when you want to explain why the friendship matters. These phrases work for chosen bonds; for family you might say "Es mi hermano" (He's my brother), which states a fact rather than a chosen value. With friends, the value statement is the point: "Ella no es mi familia, pero es como una hermana para mí" (She isn't my family, but she's like a sister to me).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In many Latin American conversations, warmth and personal detail are welcome when talking about friends. "Amigo" or "amiga" can range from a casual acquaintance to a very close bond, so speakers often add "buena amiga" or "mejor amiga" to show closeness. In some regions, "amistad" is used in the phrase "llevamos... de amistad" more than in others; "somos amigos desde hace..." is widely understood.
One thing to watch for
Using "por" with the present tense to mean an ongoing friendship, as in "Somos amigos por diez años."
Try this instead: Use "desde hace" or "llevar" for ongoing duration: "Somos amigos desde hace diez años" or "Llevamos diez años de amistad." "Por diez años" suggests a finished period, which is not what you mean here.
