Spanish for the Print Shop: Asking for Spiral Binding

Learn polite Latin American Spanish phrases to request spiral binding, specify copies and cover color at a neighborhood print shop.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

At a neighborhood print shop, you often need more than a simple photocopy. You may want a report, thesis draft or recipe collection held together with a plastic spiral and a cover. In Spanish, the everyday verb for this is engargolar, and the spiral itself is el espiral. This lesson gives you polite, service-oriented phrases to ask for spiral binding, say how many copies you need and choose a cover color. You will also learn what to expect when staff ask you questions. The focus is Latin American Spanish, with a note on regional wording.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a print shop employee to spiral-bind a document.
    • specify the number of copies and the cover color.
    • understand and answer basic questions about binding.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    ¿Me lo puede engargolar?

Can you bind it for me?

    meh loh PWEH-deh en-gar-goh-LAR

Polite request using me lo, literally 'for me, it'. Use it when handing over one document.

¿Me los puede engargolar con espiral?

Can you spiral-bind them for me?

    meh lohs PWEH-deh en-gar-goh-LAR kohn es-pee-RAL

Use los for multiple documents or copies. Con espiral makes the spiral binding explicit.

    Necesito tres copias engargoladas.

    I need three bound copies.

    neh-seh-SEE-toh trehs KOH-pee-ahs en-gar-goh-LAH-dahs

State the number before copias. The adjective engargoladas agrees with copias in feminine plural.

¿De qué colores tiene las portadas?

What colors of covers do you have?

    deh keh koh-LOH-rehs TYEH-neh las por-TAH-dahs

A natural way to ask about available cover colors without assuming a policy. Tiene (usted form) is used with staff you do not know.

    ¿Cuánto tarda el engargolado?

How long does the binding take?

    KWAHN-toh TAR-dah el en-gar-goh-LAH-doh

Asks about timing, not price. Staff may give a time or ask you to come back later.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is ¿Me lo puede engargolar? Change lo to los for several items: ¿Me los puede engargolar? Add con espiral to name the binding type: ¿Me lo puede engargolar con espiral? To state a quantity, use a number plus copias engargoladas: Necesito dos copias engargoladas. The adjective ending changes with the noun: una copia engargolada, dos copias engargoladas.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the counter when you hand over pages. Start with a greeting such as Buenos días, then make your request. If you want a specific cover color, say Quiero una portada azul or ¿Tiene portadas transparentes? If you are not sure about the service, ask ¿Hacen engargolado con espiral? This keeps the question open and lets staff explain what they offer.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Buenos días. ¿Me lo puede engargolar con espiral?

Good morning. Can you spiral-bind it for me?BWEH-nohs DEE-ahs. meh loh PWEH-deh en-gar-goh-LAR kohn es-pee-RAL
    B

    Claro. ¿Cuántas copias necesita?

Of course. How many copies do you need?KLAH-roh. KWAHN-tahs KOH-pee-ahs neh-seh-SEE-tah
    A

Necesito tres copias engargoladas. ¿Tiene portadas de color azul?

    I need three bound copies. Do you have blue covers?neh-seh-SEE-toh trehs KOH-pee-ahs en-gar-goh-LAH-dahs. TYEH-neh por-TAH-dahs deh koh-LOR ah-SOOL
    B

Sí, tenemos azul y transparente. ¿Cuántas copias necesita?

Yes, we have blue and clear. How many copies do you need?see, teh-NEH-mohs ah-SOOL ee trahns-pah-REN-teh. KWAHN-tahs KOH-pee-ahs neh-seh-SEE-tah

A little context goes a long way

In many Latin American countries, engargolado is the common word for this plastic spiral binding, while in Spain you may hear encuadernación con espiral or espiralado. Politeness matters: use usted with staff you do not know, and soften requests with por favor. Asking ¿Cuánto tarda? is normal, but asking for exact prices or guarantees may get a general answer because print shops set their own policies.

    One thing to watch for

Using engargolar as if it meant 'to copy': ¿Me lo puede engargolar? when you only want photocopies.

Try this instead: Engargolar means to bind, not to copy. For copies, say ¿Me lo puede sacar copias? or Necesito tres copias. Then add engargoladas if you want them bound: Necesito tres copias engargoladas.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely ask a staff member to spiral-bind one document?

    Show a sample answer

¿Me lo puede engargolar con espiral?

This uses the polite me lo and names the spiral binding. You could also say ¿Me lo puede engargolar? if the type is already clear from context.

2You need four bound copies. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    Necesito cuatro copias engargoladas.

The number comes before copias, and engargoladas agrees in feminine plural. Necesito cuatro copias con engargolado is also understandable.

3How can you ask what cover colors are available?

    Show a sample answer

¿De qué colores tiene las portadas?

This asks about available cover colors without assuming the shop has a specific policy. ¿Qué colores de portada tiene? is another valid option.

    Take this with you

Use ¿Me lo puede engargolar? for one item, ¿Me los puede engargolar? for several, and add con espiral, the number of copias and the cover color to get exactly what you need.
