Spanish for the Print Shop: Giving Your File Name and Folder Clearly
Learn to tell a print shop the exact name of your file in Spanish, spell it out, and confirm they have the right one before printing.

At a neighborhood print shop, the fastest way to avoid a wrong print is to say the file name yourself and then spell it. In Spanish you do this with two short patterns: El archivo se llama... for the name, and Está en la carpeta... for the folder. This lesson gives you those patterns plus the questions staff actually ask, so you can confirm the right file before anything is printed.
By the end, you can…
- say the name of my file and the folder it is in.
- spell a file name letter by letter in Spanish.
- confirm with staff that they opened the correct file.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

El archivo se llama presupuesto_final.
The file is called presupuesto_final.
el ar-CHEE-voh se YAH-mah preh-soo-PWES-toh fee-NAL
Use se llama for the file's name. In much of Latin America archivo is the everyday word for a digital file; in Spain you will also hear fichero.
Está en la carpeta Clientes.
It's in the Clientes folder.
es-TAH en la kar-PEH-tah KLYEN-tes
Use está because you are saying where the file is located right now. Carpeta means folder on a computer.
¿Me lo puede mostrar en pantalla?
Can you show it to me on screen?
meh loh PWEH-deh mows-TRAR en pan-TAH-yah
A polite request to see the file before printing. Use usted forms with staff you do not know.
¿Es el archivo correcto?
Is it the correct file?
es el ar-CHEE-voh koh-REK-toh
Ask this after they open it, to confirm before printing.
Se escribe con hache intermedia.
It's spelled with an h in the middle.
se es-KREE-beh kon AH-cheh in-ter-MEH-dyah
Useful when spelling out a name. The letter h is silent in Spanish, so you name it: hache.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is El archivo se llama + name. Se llama works like 'it is called' and does not change for the file. Examples: El archivo se llama factura_marzo. El archivo se llama logo_tienda. To add the location, use Está en la carpeta + folder name: Está en la carpeta Trabajo. You can combine both in one turn: El archivo se llama factura_marzo y está en la carpeta Trabajo.
When to use it
Use these patterns at the counter when the staff member asks ¿Cómo se llama el archivo? or ¿En qué carpeta está? Say the name first, then spell it if the name is unusual: Se llama Ruiz_2024. Se escribe erre, u, i, zeta. Staff may repeat it back; confirm with Sí, ese es or ¿Es el correcto? If they show a different file, say No, ese no es; el mío se llama... This keeps the exchange short and clear.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Buenos días. Vengo a imprimir un archivo.
Good morning. I'm here to print a file.BWEH-nos DEE-as. BEN-goh a im-pree-MEER oon ar-CHEE-vohClaro. ¿Cómo se llama el archivo?

It's called recibo_luz and it's in the Casa folder. It's spelled r, e, c, i, b, o.se YAH-mah reh-SEE-boh loos ee es-TAH en la kar-PEH-tah KAH-sah. se es-KREE-beh EH-reh, eh, SEH, ee, BEH, ohYa lo tengo. ¿Es el archivo correcto?
I have it now. Is this the correct file?yah loh TEN-goh. es el ar-CHEE-voh koh-REK-tohA little context goes a long way
In Latin American Spanish, usted is the safe choice with print shop staff you do not know; tú is common in informal neighborhood shops once the tone is friendly. In Spain, ordenador is the computer and fichero is often used for a file, while in Latin America computadora and archivo are more common. Names with underscores are usually read as guion bajo: recibo_luz is recibo, guion bajo, luz.
One thing to watch for
Saying El archivo es llamo recibo_luz or Mi archivo llamo recibo_luz.
Try this instead: Use se llama, not llamo, for the file: El archivo se llama recibo_luz. Llamo means 'I call', so it points to you, not the file. For your own name, use Me llamo Ana.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say that your file is called contrato_2024?
Show a sample answer
El archivo se llama contrato_2024.
Se llama introduces the file's name. You could also add the folder: y está en la carpeta Legal.
2A staff member asks ¿En qué carpeta está? Your folder is Fotos. Answer in a full sentence.
Show a sample answer
Está en la carpeta Fotos.
Está en la carpeta + folder name gives the location. Está is correct because it describes where the file is right now.
3You want to confirm the file on screen is the right one. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
¿Es el archivo correcto?
This asks directly if it is the correct file. You can also say ¿Es ese el mío? to ask if that one is yours.
Say the file name with se llama, add the folder with está en la carpeta, and spell unusual names letter by letter. Then confirm with ¿Es el archivo correcto? before printing.
