Staying in Touch in Spanish: Making Plans to Video Chat and Saying You Miss Someone

Learn to suggest a video call, say you miss hanging out, and schedule a time in friendly Latin American Spanish.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When a friend lives far away, you need Spanish for two jobs: suggesting a call and saying you miss spending time together. This lesson gives you friendly, natural phrases for texting or talking with someone you already know well. You will learn how to propose a video chat, ask when they are free, and set a day and time. You will also learn how to say you miss hanging out without translating word for word from English. The focus is on warm, everyday Latin American Spanish that works across countries.

    By the end, you can…

    • suggest a video chat with a friend in natural Spanish.
    • say I miss hanging out and schedule a day and time for a call.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    ¿Hacemos una videollamada pronto?

    Shall we video chat soon?

    ah-SEH-mos OO-nah bee-deh-oh-yah-MAH-dah PROHN-toh

A friendly suggestion for a friend or close family member. Listen for the full word videollamada; ll varies by region, so use the recording as one model.

    Te extraño mucho.

    I miss you a lot.

    teh eks-TRAH-nyoh MOO-choh

Te extraño mucho expresses missing someone. Te echo de menos is another way to say this; usage varies across speakers and regions.

    Extraño salir contigo.

I miss hanging out with you.

    eks-TRAH-nyoh sah-LEER kohn-TEE-goh

Extraño is the first-person form: I miss. The following activity, salir contigo, is what the speaker misses. This is different from the me gusta construction. Here salir contigo means going out or spending time together.

    ¿Cuándo tienes tiempo?

    When do you have time?

    KWAHN-doh TYEH-nehs TYEHM-poh

A direct but friendly way to ask about availability. You can add para la llamada, meaning for the call.

    ¿Te va bien el sábado?

    Does Saturday work for you?

    teh bah BYEHN el SAH-bah-doh

Te va bien is a natural way to check if a time suits someone. Change el sábado to another day or time.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

In ¿Hacemos una videollamada pronto?, hacemos is followed by the noun phrase una videollamada: the speaker suggests a video call together. Do not treat hacemos as a general verb followed directly by any infinitive. To say what you miss, use extraño followed by the person or activity: Te extraño mucho means I miss you a lot; Extraño salir contigo means I miss hanging out with you. The subject is the person who misses, so extraño means I miss and extrañas means you miss.

    When to use it

Use the recorded questions and replies with a friend you address as tú. ¿Cuándo tienes tiempo? asks about availability; ¿Te va bien el sábado a las ocho? proposes Saturday at eight. In the final reply, Perfecto accepts that proposal, Extraño salir contigo adds that the speaker misses spending time together, and ¡Hablamos el sábado! confirms talking on Saturday.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

¡Hola! Te extraño mucho. ¿Hacemos una videollamada pronto?

Perfecto. Extraño salir contigo. ¡Hablamos el sábado!

    Perfect. I miss hanging out with you. Let's talk Saturday!pehr-FEHK-toh eks-TRAH-nyoh sah-LEER kohn-TEE-goh ah-BLAH-mos el SAH-bah-doh

A little context goes a long way

Te extraño is common in Latin America; te echo de menos is another way to express missing someone. These recordings address a friend as tú. Choose tú or usted according to the relationship and setting, rather than age alone. The proposed Saturday at eight is a detail of this sample conversation.

    One thing to watch for

    Te extraño salir contigo.

Try this instead: Do not put te before extraño when the thing you miss is an activity. Say Extraño salir contigo. Use te extraño only when you miss the person: Te extraño. If you want to mention both, say Te extraño y extraño salir contigo.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you suggest a video chat soon?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Hacemos una videollamada pronto?

¿Hacemos...? is the friendly pattern for suggesting an activity together. You could also say ¿Podemos hacer una videollamada pronto? with a similar meaning.

2How do you say 'I miss hanging out with you'?

    Show a sample answer

    Extraño salir contigo.

Extraño is followed by the activity you miss. Salir contigo means hanging out or going out together. In Spain, you might hear Echo de menos salir contigo.

3How do you ask if Saturday works for your friend?

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Te va bien el sábado?

Te va bien checks whether a time suits the other person. You can add a time, for example ¿Te va bien el sábado a las ocho?

4In the recording, who proposes Saturday at eight, and which line accepts that plan? Rehearse the proposal and acceptance as a pair.

    Show a sample answer

A proposes: ¿Te va bien el sábado a las ocho? B accepts: Perfecto. Extraño salir contigo. ¡Hablamos el sábado!

B first asks about availability with ¿Cuándo tienes tiempo? A then proposes a time, and B accepts. Keep that order. The final line accepts Saturday; it does not propose a different day. Perfecto is the acceptance within B’s full line; the rest adds a feeling and confirms the day.

    Take this with you

Use ¿Hacemos una videollamada? to suggest a call, extraño + activity to say what you miss, and ¿Te va bien...? to schedule a time.
