Offering to help is different from offering to bring something. In Spanish, you usually ask whether the other person needs help, or you offer to do a specific task. This lesson teaches elementary, broadly useful Latin American Spanish phrases for offering assistance, accepting, and declining politely. You will practice the verb ayudar (to help), the verb necesitar (to need), and simple question patterns. Regional notes are included where usage changes.

    By the end, you can…

    • offer help in Spanish with a simple question.
    • ask whether someone needs help.
    • accept or decline an offer of help politely.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    ¿Te ayudo en algo?

Can I help you with anything?

    teh ah-YOO-doh en AHL-goh

Very common in Latin America. Use it when you see someone who may need assistance. Literally: 'Do I help you in something?'

    ¿Necesitas ayuda?

    Do you need help?

    neh-seh-SEE-tahs ah-YOO-dah

A direct, friendly question. Use it with one person you know well or with someone your age.

    ¿Le ayudo en algo?

Can I help you with anything? (formal)

    leh ah-YOO-doh en AHL-goh

Use le when speaking to an older person, a stranger, a customer, or someone in a formal situation.

    ¿Quieres que te ayude?

Do you want me to help you?

    KYEH-rehs keh teh ah-YOO-deh

This asks if the person wants your help. It uses a common pattern: querer que + subjunctive. Learn it as a useful chunk.

Sí, gracias. ¿Puedes ayudarme con esto?

Yes, thank you. Can you help me with this?

    see GRAH-syahs PWEH-dehs ah-yoo-DAHR-meh kon EHS-toh

A polite way to accept help and point to the task. Use esto for 'this' when the object is nearby.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To offer help, use ¿Te ayudo...? or ¿Le ayudo...? followed by a small word like en algo ('with anything') or con esto ('with this'). Examples: ¿Te ayudo con esto? = Can I help you with this? ¿Le ayudo en algo? = Can I help you with anything? (formal). The verb ayudar changes form: ayudo means 'I help.' The word te means 'you' in informal situations, and le means 'you' in formal situations.

    When to use it

Use ¿Necesitas ayuda? when you want to ask directly if someone needs help. Use ¿Te ayudo en algo? when you are already near the person and want to offer. Use ¿Le ayudo en algo? with strangers, older people, or in formal settings. If someone offers help to you, you can accept with Sí, gracias or decline with No, gracias. In some regions, people also say ¿Ocupas ayuda? (Mexico and parts of Central America) or ¿Precisas ayuda? (parts of South America), but ¿Necesitas ayuda? is widely understood.

A little context goes a long way

In much of Latin America, offering help with ¿Necesitas ayuda? or ¿Te ayudo en algo? is friendly but not pushy. With strangers or older people, use the formal ¿Le ayudo en algo? In Mexico and parts of Central America, ¿Ocupas ayuda? is common in casual speech. In parts of South America, ¿Precisas ayuda? may be used. When you decline, No, gracias is polite and sufficient.

    One thing to watch for

Using ¿Puedo ayudar? to mean 'Can I help with anything?'

Try this instead: ¿Puedo ayudar? is grammatically possible, but it sounds incomplete in everyday Spanish. It usually needs an object: ¿Puedo ayudarte? or ¿Puedo ayudarle? For 'Can I help with anything?', say ¿Te ayudo en algo? or ¿Le ayudo en algo? Example: ¿Te ayudo en algo? = Can I help you with anything?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
