Spanish for Guests: Say 'Thank You for Having Me' and Praise the Meal

Learn to thank a host for their hospitality and compliment the food in natural Latin American Spanish, with phrases for arriving, eating, and leaving.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you are invited to someone's home in Latin America, two things matter: thanking them for the invitation and praising the meal. This lesson teaches you to do both in natural, polite Spanish. You will learn phrases for arriving, complimenting the food, and saying goodbye. The focus is on hospitality, not on how the food was cooked. You will use the verb 'invitar' (to invite) and expressions like 'gracias por...' (thanks for...). By the end, you will be able to thank your host warmly and make them feel appreciated.

    By the end, you can…

    • thank a host for inviting me to their home.
    • compliment a meal in a way that focuses on hospitality.
    • respond politely when a host thanks me for coming.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Gracias por invitarme.

    Thank you for inviting me.

    GRAH-syahs por een-bee-TAR-meh

Use when you arrive or when you are leaving. It thanks the host for the invitation, not the food.

Gracias por recibirme en su casa.

Thank you for having me in your home.

    GRAH-syahs por reh-see-BEER-meh en soo KAH-sah

More formal. 'Su casa' is polite for 'your home'. Use with someone you just met or an older host.

    La comida estuvo deliciosa.

    The food was delicious.

    lah koh-MEE-dah ehs-TOO-boh deh-lee-SYOH-sah

Use the past tense 'estuvo' because the meal is finished. This praises the food itself.

    Me encantó la comida.

    I loved the food.

    meh en-kahn-TOH lah koh-MEE-dah

Stronger and warmer than 'estuvo deliciosa'. Common in casual and friendly settings.

    Qué amable de su parte.

    How kind of you.

    keh ah-MAH-bleh deh soo PAR-teh

Use this to thank the host for their hospitality and effort, not just the food.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Use 'Gracias por' + infinitive to thank someone for an action. The verb stays in the infinitive form. Examples: 'Gracias por invitarme' (Thanks for inviting me), 'Gracias por recibirme' (Thanks for having me), 'Gracias por todo' (Thanks for everything). To make it formal, add 'su casa': 'Gracias por recibirme en su casa.' This pattern works in both casual and formal situations.

    When to use it

Use 'Gracias por invitarme' when you arrive or when you leave. Use 'La comida estuvo deliciosa' or 'Me encantó la comida' after the meal, when everyone has finished eating. Use 'Qué amable de su parte' to thank the host for their hospitality, especially if they went out of their way. In Latin America, it is common to thank the host again when saying goodbye. A simple 'Gracias por todo' works well at the door.

I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for coming.keh BWEH-noh keh teh goos-TOH. GRAH-syahs por beh-NEER

A little context goes a long way

In many Latin American homes, the host may insist you eat more or take food home. A warm 'Gracias por recibirme en su casa' is a polite way to thank them for their hospitality. In formal settings, use 'su casa' and 'su parte'; with friends, 'tu casa' and 'tu parte' are fine.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 'Gracias por la comida' only.

Try this instead: That thanks the food, not the host's hospitality. Better: 'Gracias por invitarme' or 'Gracias por recibirme en su casa.' These thank the person for the invitation and for having you.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

2You just finished a meal at a friend's house. What can you say to praise the food?

    Show a sample answer

    La comida estuvo deliciosa.
