How to Talk About Product Recalls and Contamination in Latin American Spanish

Learn Spanish phrases for recalls, contamination and public health alerts, and see how they differ from allergy talk.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When food, medicine or a consumer product is unsafe, Spanish speakers usually talk about a recall, a contamination or a public health alert, not about an allergy. This lesson gives you the concrete phrases you need to report a recall, describe contamination, name the authority involved and warn someone to stop using a product. You will also learn why allergy language is different: an allergy is a personal medical reaction, while a recall or contamination is a public health event that affects many people. All examples use broadly useful Latin American Spanish, with regional notes where usage changes.

    By the end, you can…

    • report that a product has been recalled or withdrawn from the market.
    • describe contamination, the contaminated product and the public health authority involved.
    • warn someone to stop using a product and explain why this is not the same as an allergy.

    Words you’ll actually use

Se retiró del mercado un lote de leche contaminada.

A batch of contaminated milk was recalled from the market.

    seh rreh-TEE-roh del mer-KAH-doh oon LOH-teh deh LEH-cheh kon-tah-mee-NAH-dah

Standard news and public health wording. Lote means batch or lot, the key unit in recalls.

La empresa emitió un retiro voluntario del producto.

The company issued a voluntary recall of the product.

    lah em-PREH-sah eh-mee-TYOH oon rreh-TEE-roh boh-loon-TAH-ryoh del pro-DOOK-toh

Retiro is the common noun for a recall in Latin America. In Spain you may hear retirada.

Hay una alerta sanitaria por contaminación con listeria.

There is a public health alert because of listeria contamination.

    ahy OO-nah ah-LER-tah sah-nee-TAH-ryah por kon-tah-mee-nah-SYOHN kon lees-TEH-ryah

Alerta sanitaria is the standard term for a health alert issued by authorities.

No consuma este producto si tiene alergia a la proteína de la leche.

Do not consume this product if you have a milk protein allergy.

    noh kon-SOO-mah ES-teh pro-DOOK-toh see TYEH-neh ah-LER-hyah ah lah pro-teh-EE-nah deh lah LEH-cheh

This is the allergy frame: it addresses an individual medical condition, not a general recall.

La autoridad sanitaria pidió no usar el medicamento y devolverlo.

The health authority asked people not to use the medication and to return it.

    lah ow-toh-ree-DAHD sah-nee-TAH-ryah pee-DYOH noh oo-SAHR el meh-dee-kah-MEN-toh ee deh-bol-VER-loh

Useful for official instructions. Devolverlo means to return it.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

For recalls, Spanish commonly uses se retiró or se retiraron plus the product and the reason: Se retiraron del mercado varios lotes de yogur por contaminación. For active warnings, use the imperative or an authority subject: No consuma el producto. La autoridad sanitaria pidió devolverlo. Notice that retiro is a noun and retirar is the verb; both are frequent in news and official notices. Contaminación is the general term, while intoxicación refers to poisoning in people who already consumed the product.

    When to use it

Use recall and contamination language for public health events: a batch, a lot, a brand, an alert, an authority. Use allergy language for a personal medical condition: Tengo alergia a los mariscos. A product can be recalled because of contamination even when no one is allergic to it, and an allergy warning on a label is not the same as a recall. If you are reporting to a clinic, say Presenté una reacción alérgica, not Hubo un retiro, because the first describes your body and the second describes a public measure.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Latin American news and official notices, retiro del mercado and alerta sanitaria are common, while Spain often prefers retirada del mercado. Authorities may be named generically as la autoridad sanitaria, or specifically as la Secretaría de Salud, el Ministerio de Salud or una agencia reguladora, depending on the country. Use usted with officials and in formal warnings, and tú with friends or family.

    One thing to watch for

Using alergia to describe a public recall, as in Hubo una alergia con la leche.

Try this instead: Use retiro or contaminación for public events: Hubo un retiro de leche por contaminación. Keep alergia for a personal medical condition: Tengo alergia a la leche.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'A batch was recalled because of contamination' in Spanish?

    Show a sample answer

Se retiró un lote por contaminación.

This uses the passive-like se retiró with lote and por contaminación. You could also say Retiraron un lote por contaminación, which is equally correct in news style.

2Which term fits a public health alert: alergia or alerta sanitaria?

    Show a sample answer

    Alerta sanitaria.

Alerta sanitaria refers to an official public health warning. Alergia refers to a personal medical condition and does not describe a public alert.

3Translate: 'The health authority asked people not to use the medication.'

    Show a sample answer

La autoridad sanitaria pidió no usar el medicamento.

This keeps the authority as the subject and uses pidió plus the infinitive no usar. You could also say pidió que no se usara el medicamento, but the infinitive version is more common in notices.

    Take this with you

Use retiro, contaminación and alerta sanitaria for public health events; reserve alergia for personal medical reactions. When in doubt, ask: is this about a product and the public, or about my body?
