Changing Your Travel Itinerary in Latin American Spanish

Learn to say you want to change your itinerary, ask about available options, and adjust dates or destinations politely in Latin American Spanish.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When travel plans shift, you need Spanish that lets you ask for changes without sounding rude or vague. This lesson focuses on one practical skill: explaining that you want to change your itinerary and understanding the options you are offered. You will practice polite request phrases, questions about availability, and ways to confirm new dates or destinations. The Spanish here is broadly useful in Latin America, with regional notes where usage differs.

    By the end, you can…

    • say I would like to change my itinerary using a polite Spanish request.
    • ask what options are available for changing dates, routes, or destinations.
    • understand and respond to an agent offering alternatives.
    • confirm a new itinerary and ask about fees or conditions.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Quisiera cambiar mi itinerario.

I would like to change my itinerary.

    kee-SYEH-rah kahm-BYAR mee ee-tee-neh-RAH-ryoh

Quisiera is a polite, slightly formal way to say 'I would like.' It works well with airline, bus, or tour agents.

¿Qué opciones tengo para cambiar las fechas?

What options do I have to change the dates?

    keh op-SYOH-nehs TEHN-goh PAH-rah kahm-BYAR lahs FEH-chahs

Use this to ask broadly about date changes. Opciones is plural and common in service contexts.

    ¿Habría disponibilidad para otro día?

Would there be availability for another day?

    ah-BREE-ah dees-poh-nee-bee-lee-DAHD PAH-rah OH-troh DEE-ah

Habría is the conditional of haber, useful for polite hypothetical questions. In some regions you may hear ¿Habrá disponibilidad?

    ¿Puedo cambiar el destino también?

Can I change the destination too?

    PWEH-doh kahm-BYAR el dehs-TEE-noh tahm-BYEHN

Use también to add another change. This is common when asking about rerouting a trip.

    ¿Eso tiene algún costo adicional?

Does that have any additional cost?

    EH-soh TYEH-neh ahl-GOON KOHS-toh ah-dee-syoh-NAHL

Algún is used before a masculine singular noun. This question helps you understand fees before confirming.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Use quisiera + infinitive to make polite requests: Quisiera cambiar mi itinerario. Quisiera ajustar la fecha de regreso. You can also use me gustaría + infinitive: Me gustaría cambiar el vuelo. Both are polite. Quisiera can sound slightly more formal, while me gustaría is common in everyday conversation. To ask about options, use ¿Qué opciones tengo para...? followed by an infinitive: ¿Qué opciones tengo para cambiar la fecha?

    When to use it

Use these phrases when speaking with an airline, bus company, hotel, or tour operator. Start with Quisiera cambiar... to state your goal, then ask ¿Qué opciones tengo? to hear alternatives. If you need a specific change, add para cambiar la fecha, para cambiar el destino, or para salir un día antes. When an agent offers something, confirm with ¿Eso tiene algún costo adicional? or ¿Puedo confirmar el nuevo itinerario? This keeps the conversation clear and polite.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Latin American service encounters, politeness often comes from tone and softeners like quisiera, me gustaría, and por favor. Direct commands can sound abrupt. In some countries, such as Mexico and Colombia, usted is common with service staff even among younger adults; in others, tú is normal. Using usted is a safe, respectful choice when you do not know the person.

    One thing to watch for

Using quiero cambiar mi itinerario as the main polite request in a formal service situation.

Try this instead: Quiero is grammatically correct but can sound direct. Prefer Quisiera cambiar mi itinerario or Me gustaría cambiar mi itinerario for a softer request. Example: Quisiera cambiar mi itinerario, por favor.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you politely say 'I would like to change my itinerary' to an airline agent?

    Show a sample answer

    Quisiera cambiar mi itinerario.

Quisiera is a polite conditional form that softens the request. Me gustaría cambiar mi itinerario is also correct and slightly more conversational.

2Ask what options you have to change the dates.

    Show a sample answer

¿Qué opciones tengo para cambiar las fechas?

This uses the useful pattern ¿Qué opciones tengo para...? plus an infinitive. You could also ask ¿Qué opciones hay para cambiar las fechas?

3Ask whether there would be availability for another day.

    Show a sample answer

    ¿Habría disponibilidad para otro día?

Habría is a polite conditional. In some regions, ¿Habrá disponibilidad para otro día? is also common and acceptable.

    Take this with you

Start with Quisiera cambiar mi itinerario, then ask ¿Qué opciones tengo? and confirm fees with ¿Eso tiene algún costo adicional? Keep your tone polite and use usted with service staff when unsure.
