The conditional podrías softens the request. After the request, name the object or action: Estoy buscando el museo. ¿Me puede decir cómo llegar? This keeps the request clear and polite.
When to use it
Use formal usted forms with people you don't know, especially older adults, officials, or service staff. Use informal tú with friends, classmates, and close peers. If you are unsure, usted is the safer choice. For example, to a stranger: Disculpe, ¿me puede ayudar? Estoy buscando la estación. To a friend: Oye, ¿me ayudas con una cosa? Estoy buscando la estación en el mapa. Notice that Spanish often uses the present tense for immediate requests (¿Me ayudas?) and the conditional for extra politeness (¿Podrías ayudarme?). Both are correct; the conditional simply sounds softer.

In much of Latin America, a greeting before a request is expected. Start with Disculpe or Buenos días, then ask. Using usted with strangers shows respect; using tú with a stranger can sound too familiar in some regions, though younger speakers may use tú more freely. When asking for directions, it is normal to repeat back the instructions to confirm: ¿Entonces, dos cuadras y a la izquierda? This helps you remember and shows you were listening.
