In this lesson you will learn one specific conversational move: asking another person what their favorite food is, and answering when someone asks you. This is different from simply stating a preference out of nowhere. Here you will use the question ¿Cuál es tu comida favorita? and the answer pattern Mi comida favorita es..., plus common foods such as tacos, pizza, arroz and pollo. You will also practice the verb gustar in the phrase ¿Qué te gusta comer? so you can keep the conversation going naturally.

To ask about someone's favorite food, use ¿Cuál es tu comida favorita? To answer, use Mi comida favorita es + food. Examples: ¿Cuál es tu comida favorita? Mi comida favorita es el arroz. Mi comida favorita es la sopa. For a follow-up, ask ¿Qué te gusta comer? and answer Me gusta comer pollo. Remember that gustar works differently: me gusta is used for one thing or an activity, and me gustan for plural things, as in Me gustan las frutas.
When to use it
Use tu when speaking to one person you know well, such as a friend or classmate. Use su when speaking formally to one person or when speaking to more than one person: ¿Cuál es su comida favorita? This is common in Latin America when addressing an older person or someone you just met. If you are asking a group, you can also say ¿Cuál es su comida favorita? and expect each person to answer. For a casual follow-up among friends, ¿Y a ti? works well after you have answered.

In many Latin American countries, meals are social, and asking about favorite foods is a friendly, everyday question. The word comida often means 'food' in general, but it can also mean 'lunch' in some regions, depending on context. If you are in Mexico, tacos and tamales are common answers; in Argentina, asado and empanadas are common. These are examples, not rules for every person. Use tu with friends and su in formal situations.
One thing to watch for
Saying ¿Qué es tu comida favorita? to mean 'What is your favorite food?'
Try this instead: Use ¿Cuál es tu comida favorita? when choosing from options. ¿Qué es...? asks for a definition, as in ¿Qué es la pizza? ('What is pizza?'). For favorites, ¿Cuál es...? is the natural choice.
