Telling a Short Funny Anecdote in Korean
Learn to tell a brief real-life funny story in Korean with a clear punchline, using past tense, sequencing words, and the punchline marker -거든.

Telling a short funny anecdote is one of the most rewarding things you can do in Korean. Unlike a long story, an anecdote is one brief real-life incident with a clear punchline. In this lesson you will learn the exact building blocks: how to open with 어제 이런 일이 있었어요, how to sequence events with 그러다가 and 그런데, how to end with a punchline using -거든, and how to react when someone tells you a funny story. Everything uses the polite informal style (해요체), which is safe with friends, classmates, and most people you meet casually.
By the end, you can…
- open a short anecdote with a time marker and an attention-getting phrase
- sequence two or three past events using 그러다가 and 그런데
- deliver a punchline with -거든 and react with 웃겼어요
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.
Checking available voices…
어제 이런 일이 있었어요.
Something like this happened yesterday.
eo-je i-reon i-ri i-sseo-sseo-yo
Standard opener for an anecdote. Use 어제, 오늘 아침, 지난주 with the same pattern.
그런데 진짜 웃긴 게 있었어요.
But there was something really funny.
geu-reon-de jin-jja ut-gin ge i-sseo-sseo-yo
그런데 signals a twist. 웃긴 게 sets up that a punchline is coming.
그러다가 제가 넘어졌어요.
And then I fell over.
geu-reo-da-ga je-ga neo-meo-jyeo-sseo-yo
그러다가 links one action to the next unexpected event. Use it once or twice, not every sentence.
알고 보니까 제 가방이었거든요.
It turns out it was my bag, you see.
al-go bo-ni-kka je ga-bang-i-eot-geo-deun-yo
-거든(요) marks the punchline or the key reveal. It means 'you see' or 'the thing is.'
아 진짜요? 완전 웃겼어요.
Oh really? That was so funny.
a jin-jja-yo? wan-jeon ut-gyeo-sseo-yo
Natural listener reaction. 웃겼어요 literally means 'it made me laugh.'
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
Build your anecdote in three moves: (1) time + opener, (2) two or three events with 그러다가 and 그런데, (3) punchline with -거든요. For example: 어제 카페에 갔어요. 그런데 어떤 남자가 제 커피를 가져갔어요. 그러다가 알고 보니까 그 사람이 제 친구였거든요. The verb before -거든요 stays in the plain or past form: 이었거든요, 있었거든요, 몰랐거든요. Do not use -거든요 in the middle of the story; save it for the reveal.
When to use it
Use this style when you want to share a quick funny moment with friends, coworkers, or classmates. Keep it under about 30 seconds. If the listener is older or in a formal setting, switch to 습니다체: 어제 이런 일이 있었습니다. 그런데 정말 웃긴 일이 있었습니다. With close friends you can drop 요 for 반말: 어제 이런 일 있었어. 알고 보니까 내 가방이었거든. Match the listener's level rather than mixing levels inside one anecdote.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
어제 이런 일이 있었어요.
Something like this happened yesterday.eo-je i-reon i-ri i-sseo-sseo-yo진짜요? 뭐였어요?
Really? What was it?jin-jja-yo? mwo-yeot-sseo-yo?버스에서 내렸는데 제 우산이 없어졌거든요.
I got off the bus, and my umbrella had disappeared, you see.beo-seu-e-seo nae-ryeot-neun-de je u-san-i eop-sseo-jyeot-geo-deun-yo아 진짜요? 완전 웃겼어요.
Oh really? That was so funny.a jin-jja-yo? wan-jeon ut-gyeo-sseo-yoA little context goes a long way
Korean anecdotes often end with a self-deprecating twist rather than a boast, and listeners usually give a warm reaction like 아이고 or 진짜요? before laughing. The marker -거든요 softens the reveal and invites agreement, so it sounds friendlier than stating the punchline flatly. Avoid exaggerated claims or long setups; Korean listeners often appreciate a short, clean punchline.
One thing to watch for
Using -거든요 at the start of the story, as in 어제 카페에 갔거든요. 그런데...
Try this instead: Save -거든요 for the punchline or key reveal. Open with a plain past form instead: 어제 카페에 갔어요. 그런데... Then reveal with 알고 보니까 제 친구였거든요.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you open a short anecdote about something that happened yesterday?
Show a sample answer
어제 이런 일이 있었어요.
This is the standard opener. You can also say 어제 진짜 웃긴 일이 있었어요 for a stronger setup.
2Which word links one event to the next unexpected event?

그러다가
그러다가 means 'and then' for an unexpected turn. 그런데 also works for a twist, but 그러다가 emphasizes the sequence of actions.
3Where should -거든요 appear in a short anecdote?
Show a sample answer
At the punchline or key reveal, for example 알고 보니까 제 가방이었거든요.
-거든요 marks the reveal and means 'you see.' Using it too early weakens the punchline; alternatives like -는데요 can also soften a reveal.
Open with a time marker, link two events with 그러다가 and 그런데, then land the punchline with -거든요.
