항상
always, all the time
hang-sang
Neutral and very common. Use before the verb or at the start of a sentence.
늘
always, all the time
neul
Slightly more literary or emphatic than 항상. Common in writing and formal speech.
그녀는 항상 일찍 도착해요.
She always arrives early.
geu-nyeo-neun hang-sang il-jjik do-chak-hae-yo
Adverb 항상 goes before the verb 일찍 도착해요. 일찍 is a manner adverb.
저는 아침을 늘 먹어요.
I always eat breakfast.
jeo-neun a-chim-eul neul meo-geo-yo
늘 before the verb. Object 아침을 comes before the adverb.
주말에는 항상 친구를 만나요.
On weekends, I always meet friends.
ju-mal-e-neun hang-sang chin-gu-reul man-na-yo
Time adverb 주말에는 at the start, then 항상, then object and verb.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
Korean adverbs of frequency like 항상 and 늘 typically appear immediately before the verb. The basic order is: subject + time adverb + frequency adverb + object + manner adverb + verb. For example, 그녀는 항상 일찍 도착해요 (She always arrives early). Here 항상 comes before 일찍, and both come before the verb 도착해요. You can also move the time adverb to the front: 주말에는 항상 친구를 만나요 (On weekends, I always meet friends). The meaning stays the same, but the time expression is emphasized.
When to use it
Use 항상 in everyday conversation for habits and repeated actions. Use 늘 when you want a slightly more emphatic or literary tone, such as in writing or formal speech. Both mean 'all the time' or 'always', but they are not identical in register. For example, 저는 늘 감사해요 (I am always grateful) can sound a little more literary or heartfelt than 저는 항상 감사해요. In casual speech, 항상 is more common. Adverbs of frequency and manner normally come before the verb; putting them after the verb is ungrammatical in a statement.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
주말에 뭐 해요?
What do you do on weekends?ju-mal-e mwo hae-yo?저는 주말에는 항상 친구를 만나요.
On weekends, I always meet friends.jeo-neun ju-mal-e-neun hang-sang chin-gu-reul man-na-yo.아, 그래요? 저는 늘 집에서 쉬어요.
Oh, really? I always rest at home.a, geu-rae-yo? jeo-neun neul jip-e-seo swi-eo-yo.그렇군요. 저도 가끔은 집에서 쉬고 싶어요.
I see. Sometimes I also want to rest at home.geu-reo-kun-yo. jeo-do ga-kkeum-eun jip-e-seo swi-go si-peo-yo.A little context goes a long way
항상 is the default choice in spoken Korean, while 늘 carries a slightly more formal or literary feel. In everyday conversation, using 늘 too often can sound a bit stiff. Both are polite with the -요 ending. When speaking to close friends, you can drop -요, but the adverb placement stays the same.
One thing to watch for
Placing the adverb after the verb, as in *도착해요 항상 일찍.
Try this instead: In Korean, adverbs of frequency and manner come before the verb. Say 항상 일찍 도착해요. In a standard statement, the verb comes at the end of the sentence.
