Korean for Elementary Learners: Describing Friends and Chosen Bonds
Learn to say a friend is always there for you and that you have been friends for years, using Korean friendship vocabulary and the pattern 좋은 친구예요.

In this lesson you will learn to talk about friends in Korean at an elementary level. The focus is on chosen bonds: saying that someone is always there for you, that you have been friends for years, and that a friend is important to you. You will use the polite -요 style, which is safe in most everyday conversations with people you do not know well. You will also learn why Korean does not need a word like 'it' in these sentences, and how to use the plural marker -들 naturally.
By the end, you can…
- say that a friend is always there for me in Korean.
- say that we have been friends for years.
- describe a friend with a simple adjective and the polite -요 ending.
- ask and answer a simple question about how long two people have been friends.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

그녀는 항상 내 곁에 있어요.
She is always there for me.
geu-nyeo-neun hang-sang nae gyeot-e it-seo-yo
Use this to say a female friend is always by your side. For a male friend, change 그녀는 to 그는 (geu-neun).
우리는 오래된 친구예요.
We have been friends for a long time.
u-ri-neun o-rae-doen chin-gu-ye-yo
A natural way to say the friendship is old and lasting. It does not mean the friends themselves are old.
우리는 십 년 동안 친구였어요.
We have been friends for ten years.
u-ri-neun sip nyeon dong-an chin-gu-yeot-seo-yo
Use a number plus 년 동안 to state a length of time. The past tense 였어요 shows the friendship started in the past and continues.
그는 나에게 정말 소중한 친구예요.
He is a really precious friend to me.
geu-neun na-e-ge jeong-mal so-jung-han chin-gu-ye-yo
Use 소중한 for a friend who matters deeply. 나에게 marks the person to whom the friend is precious.
우리는 서로 잘 이해해요.
We understand each other well.
u-ri-neun seo-ro jal i-hae-hae-yo
서로 means each other. This sentence describes the mutual quality of a close friendship.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
A very useful pattern is [person]은/는 [description]이에요/예요. The noun before 이에요/예요 tells what the person is. For example, 그녀는 좋은 친구예요 (geu-nyeo-neun jo-eun chin-gu-ye-yo) means 'She is a good friend.' If the noun ends in a consonant, use 이에요, as in 학생이에요 (hak-saeng-i-e-yo), 'is a student,' because 학생 ends in a consonant. If the noun ends in a vowel, use 예요, as in 친구예요 (chin-gu-ye-yo), because 친구 ends in a vowel. This ending is polite and neutral.
When to use it
Use these sentences when you want to express value in a friendship, not just describe family. Korean often leaves out words like 'it' or 'they' when the meaning is clear. For example, 항상 내 곁에 있어요 can mean 'She is always there for me' if the person is already known. To make the subject clear, add 그녀는 or 그는. When you talk about duration, use a time word plus 동안: 오래 동안 (o-rae dong-an) is less natural than 오랫동안 (o-raet-dong-an), so learn 오랫동안 as one word meaning 'for a long time.'
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
민수 씨, 그 여자는 누구예요?
Minsu, who is that woman?min-su ssi, geu yeo-ja-neun nu-gu-ye-yo?제 친구예요. 우리는 오랫동안 친구였어요.
She is my friend. We have been friends for a long time.je chin-gu-ye-yo. u-ri-neun o-raet-dong-an chin-gu-yeot-seo-yo.그래요? 그녀는 어떤 사람이에요?
Really? What kind of person is she?geu-rae-yo? geu-nyeo-neun eo-tteon sa-ram-i-e-yo?그녀는 항상 내 곁에 있어요. 정말 소중한 친구예요.
She is always there for me. She is a really precious friend.geu-nyeo-neun hang-sang nae gyeot-e it-seo-yo. jeong-mal so-jung-han chin-gu-ye-yo.A little context goes a long way
Korean friendship talk often uses age and school or workplace ties to explain how people met, but closeness is shown through actions and steady presence rather than frequent declarations. The word 친구 is usually used for people of similar age; Koreans may call an older close acquaintance 형, 오빠, 누나 or 언니 instead. Using the polite -요 style is safe with acquaintances, while 반말 is for close friends after both people agree it is comfortable.
One thing to watch for
Saying 우리는 친구예요 for 'We have been friends for years' because English uses the present perfect.
Try this instead: Korean does not have a present perfect tense. To show duration, add a time expression and use the past tense: 우리는 십 년 동안 친구였어요 (u-ri-neun sip nyeon dong-an chin-gu-yeot-seo-yo), 'We have been friends for ten years.' Without the time phrase, 우리는 친구예요 simply means 'We are friends.'
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you say 'She is always there for me' in polite Korean?
Show a sample answer
그녀는 항상 내 곁에 있어요.
This uses 그녀는 for 'she,' 항상 for 'always,' and 내 곁에 있어요 for 'is by my side.' You can also say 항상 내 곁에 있어요 if the subject is already clear.
2Change 우리는 친구예요 to say 'We have been friends for five years.'
Show a sample answer
우리는 오 년 동안 친구였어요.
Add 오 년 동안 for 'for five years' and change 예요 to 였어요 to show the friendship began in the past. Some speakers may say 오 년째 친구예요, which also works.
3Which ending fits 학생, 이에요 or 예요?
Show a sample answer
이에요, because 학생 ends in a consonant: 학생이에요.
Use 이에요 after a consonant and 예요 after a vowel. 친구 ends in a vowel, so it takes 예요: 친구예요. Both are polite.
Use [person]은/는 [description]이에요/예요 to describe a friend, and add a time word plus 동안 with the past tense to say how long you have been friends. Keep the polite -요 style with acquaintances.
