Korean: Say No Firmly but Kindly to a Request (I Can't Take That On Right Now)

Learn intermediate Korean phrases to decline a request or added responsibility politely but clearly, using 지금은 어려울 것 같아요 and related patterns.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

This lesson teaches you how to say no to a request or added responsibility in Korean without sounding harsh. The focus is on declining a task, favor, or extra commitment because of your current limits, not on turning down social plans. You will learn five useful phrases, the core pattern -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 for softened refusals, and how to use 지금은 (right now) to leave room for future help. By the end, you should be able to tell a coworker, friend, or acquaintance that you cannot take something on at the moment while keeping the relationship comfortable.

    By the end, you can…

    • decline a request or added responsibility in Korean without sounding abrupt.
    • use 지금은 and -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 to soften a refusal and signal a current limit.
    • ask for time or suggest an alternative when I cannot take something on right now.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

I don't think I can do it right now.

    ji-geu-meun eo-ryeo-ul geot ga-ta-yo

A standard polite refusal for a task or favor. 지금은 limits the refusal to now, and 것 같아요 softens it.

I'm sorry, but I don't think I can do it this time.

    joe-song-ha-ji-man i-beo-ne-neun mot hal geot ga-ta-yo

Adds an apology and 이번에는 (this time). Use with coworkers, clients, or anyone you want to treat carefully.

It's because I have a lot of work on my plate right now.

    je-ga ji-geum mat-go it-neun i-ri ma-na-seo-yo

Gives a reason without over-explaining. The ending -아서요/어서요 makes the sentence sound like a gentle explanation.

    I'll help you next time.

    da-eu-me do-wa-deu-ril-ge-yo

Keeps the door open. 도와드릴게요 uses humble 드리다, so it is polite and warm.

Could you perhaps ask someone else?

    hok-si da-reun sa-ra-me-ge bu-tak-hae-do doel-kka-yo

A careful way to redirect a request. 혹시 makes it sound tentative rather than dismissive.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 means 'I think it will be...' or 'it seems...'. When you attach it to a verb, it softens a direct refusal. Instead of saying 못 해요 (I can't do it), say 못 할 것 같아요 (I don't think I'll be able to do it). Add 지금은 to limit the refusal to the present: 지금은 어려울 것 같아요. You can also use -기 어려울 것 같아요 after a verb stem: 지금은 맡기 어려울 것 같아요 (I don't think I can take it on right now). This pattern is common in workplaces and among acquaintances because it avoids a blunt no.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when someone asks you to take on a task, join a project, or do a favor, and you cannot because of your current workload or personal limits. They are not for declining social plans; for those, Korean speakers often use 약속이 있어요 (I have plans) or 다음에 같이 가요 (let's go together next time). Also, 지금은 is important: it signals that your answer might change later. If you mean never, say 이번에는 어려울 것 같아요 or simply 못 하겠어요. With close friends, you can shorten to 지금은 좀 어려울 것 같아. With superiors, keep the full polite form and consider adding 죄송하지만.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Minsu, could you take on this report by this week?min-su ssi, i-beon ju-kka-ji i bo-go-seo jom mat-a jul su i-sseo-yo?
    B

    I'm sorry, but I don't think I can right now. It's because I have a lot of work on my plate.joe-song-ha-ji-man ji-geu-meun eo-ryeo-ul geot ga-ta-yo. je-ga mat-go it-neun i-ri ma-na-seo-yo.
    A

    Ah, I see. Then is next week perhaps possible?a, geu-reo-kun-yo. geu-reom hok-si da-eum ju-e-neun ga-neung-hae-yo?
    B

    I think I'll have time next week. I'll help you then.da-eum ju-e-neun si-ga-ni doel geot ga-ta-yo. geu-ttae do-wa-deu-ril-ge-yo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean, a direct 못 해요 can sound blunt or even rude in professional settings. Softening with -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 and adding a brief reason like 바빠서요 (because I'm busy) is often expected. However, too much softening can make your refusal unclear, so include a clear limit such as 지금은 or 이번에는. If you are close to the person, a shorter form like 지금은 좀 어려울 것 같아 is fine. Age and workplace hierarchy also affect how much apology and honorific language you should use.

    One thing to watch for

Using a direct 못 해요 or 안 돼요 as a first response to a request from a coworker or acquaintance.

Try this instead: Soften the refusal with -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 and add a time limit: 지금은 어려울 것 같아요. If you need to be very polite, say This keeps the relationship comfortable while still being clear.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Your coworker asks you to take on an extra task today. You are already busy. What is a polite, clear refusal?

    Show a sample answer

This uses 죄송하지만 to apologize, 지금은 to limit the refusal to now, and -아서요 to give a gentle reason. Other valid answers include 지금은 못 할 것 같아요 or 이번에는 어려울 것 같아요.

2You want to decline but offer to help later. What phrase can you add?

    Show a sample answer

This keeps the door open and uses humble 드리다. You could also say 다음 주에는 시간이 될 것 같아요, which is slightly more specific.

3A friend asks you to lend money right now, and you cannot. Give a kind but firm refusal.

    Show a sample answer

With a close friend, you can use 미안하지만 and the plain soft ending -을 것 같아. Adding 이해해 줘서 고마워 (thank you for understanding) keeps it warm. A politer version would use 죄송하지만 and -어요.

    Take this with you

To say no firmly but kindly in Korean, use 지금은 + -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요, add a short reason, and offer a future alternative when possible.
