Korean for Intermediate Learners: Expressing Hurt Feelings and Working Toward Resolution
Learn to say 'I felt hurt when...' in Korean, listen to the other person, and steer the conversation toward a solution rather than simply winning a disagreement.

In Korean, telling someone that you felt hurt is not the same as starting an argument. The goal is to name the feeling, explain the specific moment, and then invite the other person to help solve the problem. This lesson gives you intermediate-level patterns for doing that politely and clearly. You will practice the difference between stating a grievance and seeking a resolution, using forms such as 서운했어요, 그때가 아니라, and 어떻게 하면 좋을까요. Pay attention to honorifics and softeners, because Korean listeners often judge the relationship by how directly a complaint is framed.
By the end, you can…
- say that I felt hurt by a specific action or moment in Korean.
- ask what the other person understood and listen before responding.
- move from disagreement to a concrete solution using Korean resolution patterns.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

I felt hurt at that moment.
geuttae seounhaesseoyo.
Use 서운하다 for a quiet, relational hurt rather than strong anger. It is softer than 화가 났어요.
That is not what I meant.
je mareun geuge anieosseoyo.
A calm clarification when the other person has misunderstood your intention.
Can you tell me how it sounded to you?
eotteoke deullyeonneunji malhae jul su isseoyo?
Invites listening before you defend yourself. Use with friends or close colleagues.
I want to check whether there is a part I misunderstood.
jega ohaehan bubuni inneunji hwaginago sipeoyo.
Shows willingness to listen and lowers defensiveness in a serious conversation.
What would be a good way to handle this?
eotteoke hamyeon joeulkkayo?
A resolution-focused question. It shifts the talk from blame to a shared next step.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern -았/었을 때 서운했어요 lets you attach a feeling to a specific moment: 네가 약속을 잊었을 때 서운했어요 means 'I felt hurt when you forgot the promise.' Use 서운했어요 for relational disappointment, not for a major betrayal. If you need a stronger word, 속상했어요 works for 'I was upset,' while 화가 났어요 is closer to 'I got angry.' The softener -더라고요 can add a reflective tone: 그 말을 들었을 때 좀 서운하더라고요.
When to use it
Use this language when you want repair, not victory. In Korean, 직접적으로 'You did wrong' can sound confrontational, so frame the issue around your feeling and the specific moment: 그때 그 말이 서운했어요. Then ask a listening question, such as After that, move to a solution with 어떻게 하면 좋을까요? or 다음에는 이렇게 해 주면 좋겠어요. This sequence separates disagreement from resolution: disagreement stops at 'I am right'; resolution asks what both people will do next.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
I felt a bit hurt when you cut me off at yesterday's gathering.eoje moimeseo nae mareul kkeuneosseul ttae jom seounhaesseoyo.
Ah, I see. I did not realize it came across that way. Can you tell me how it sounded to you?a, geuraetgunyo. jega geureoke deullyeonneunji mollasseoyo. eotteoke deullyeonneunji malhae jul su isseoyo?
You moved to another topic before I finished, so I felt as if my opinion was ignored.je mari kkeutnagi jeone dareun jujero neomeogaseo, je uigyeoni musidoen geotcheoreom neukkyeosseoyo.
That could be. Next time I will wait until you finish. What would be a good way to handle it?geureol su itgenneyo. daeumeneun mari kkeutnal ttaekkaji gidarilgeyo. eotteoke hamyeon joeulkkayo?A little context goes a long way
Korean conversation often values harmony, so a direct accusation can damage the relationship even when your point is valid. Naming your feeling with 서운했어요 and asking a listening question keeps the focus on repair. With superiors or older people, use more indirect phrasing such as 제가 좀 속상했어요 rather than demanding an apology. Age and workplace hierarchy can affect how directly you may speak.
One thing to watch for
Using 당신은 잘못했어요 as the opening line, which sounds like a blunt accusation.
Try this instead: Start with the specific moment and your feeling: 그때 그 말을 들었을 때 서운했어요. Then ask 어떻게 들렸는지 말해 줄 수 있어요? This keeps the conversation aimed at resolution rather than blame.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you say 'I felt hurt when you forgot our promise' in Korean?
Show a sample answer
This uses -았/었을 때 to anchor the feeling to a specific moment and 서운했어요 for relational hurt. 속상했어요 is also possible if the feeling was stronger.
2Which question best invites the other person to explain their side before you respond?

This asks how it sounded to them, showing that you are listening. 제 말은 그게 아니었어요 is also useful, but it defends your intention rather than inviting their view.
3What phrase moves the conversation from blame to a shared next step?

This asks what would be a good way forward. 다음에는 이렇게 해 주면 좋겠어요 is another valid resolution-focused option.
Name the moment, say 서운했어요, listen with 어떻게 들렸는지, and finish with 어떻게 하면 좋을까요? That turns hurt into repair.
