Korean for Reflecting on Relationships: "We've Grown Closer" vs. "We Drifted Apart"

Learn intermediate Korean patterns to evaluate how relationships change over time: 가까워지다, 멀어지다, and 틀어지다, with reflective, natural phrasing.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In Korean, talking about a relationship is not the same as evaluating it. This lesson focuses on the specific skill of assessing how a bond has changed: whether you have grown closer (가까워지다), drifted apart (멀어지다), or become strained (틀어지다). You will learn to use these verbs with the perfective -아/어 버리다 and the retrospective -더라 to sound reflective rather than gossipy. The goal is to help you describe emotional distance and closeness accurately, using the right politeness level for a thoughtful conversation with a friend or counselor.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a relationship becoming closer or more distant using 가까워지다 and 멀어지다.
    • use -아/어 버리다 to express a sense of regret or completion about a relationship change.
    • ask and answer reflective questions about why a bond changed, using -더라 and -는 것 같다.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    우리는 점점 가까워졌어.

    We gradually grew closer.

    uri-neun jeomjeom gakkawojyeosseo

Casual polite (해요체). Use with a close friend when positively evaluating a bond. 점점 emphasizes a gradual process.

    시간이 지나니까 서로 멀어졌어.

As time passed, we drifted apart.

    sigani jinakanikka seoro meoreojyeosseo

Casual polite. 서로 means 'each other'; this phrasing avoids blaming one person.

    그때 우리 사이가 틀어져 버렸어.

Back then, things between us became strained (and stayed that way).

    geuttae uri sai-ga teureojyeo beoryeosseo

Casual polite. -아/어 버리다 adds a nuance of regret or an irreversible outcome. 사이 means 'relationship/between us'.

요즘 우리 관계가 예전 같지 않은 것 같아.

These days, our relationship doesn't seem like it used to.

yojeum uri gwangye-ga yejeon gatji aneun geot gata

Polite and indirect. -ㄴ 것 같아 softens the evaluation, useful when you are not fully certain.

    왜 그렇게 됐는지 생각해 본 적 있어?

Have you ever thought about why it turned out that way?

wae geureoke dwaenneunji saenggakae bon jeok isseo?

Reflective question in casual polite. -아/어 본 적 있어 asks about past experience.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern for evaluating a bond is [사이/관계] + 가까워지다/멀어지다/틀어지다. 가까워지다 means 'to become close' (from 가깝다 + -아/어지다). 멀어지다 means 'to become distant' (from 멀다 + -아/어지다). 틀어지다 means 'to become twisted/strained' and is used for relationships that have gone wrong. To add a reflective or regretful tone, attach -아/어 버리다: 우리는 결국 멀어져 버렸어 (In the end, we drifted apart). For a gentle evaluation, use -는 것 같다: 우리 사이가 좀 틀어진 것 같아 (It seems things between us have become a bit strained).

    When to use it

Use these patterns when you are assessing the state of a relationship, not just describing an event. For example, if you simply say 어제 친구를 만났어 (I met a friend yesterday), you are reporting. But 우리는 예전보다 훨씬 가까워졌어 (We've become much closer than before) evaluates the bond. Use 멀어지다 when distance grew without a single dramatic cause: 바빠서 자주 못 만나다 보니 멀어졌어 (We couldn't meet often because we were busy, so we drifted apart). Use 틀어지다 when there was tension or conflict: 오해 때문에 사이가 틀어졌어 (The relationship became strained because of a misunderstanding). In formal or counseling settings, use -습니다 style: 관계가 많이 멀어졌습니다.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    요즘 민수랑 자주 만나?

Do you meet Minsu often these days?yojeum Minsu-rang jaju manna?
    B

아니, 예전에는 매일 연락했는데 이제는 거의 안 해. 시간이 지나니까 서로 멀어졌어.

No, we used to contact each other every day, but now hardly. As time passed, we drifted apart.ani, yejeone-neun maeil yeollakhaenneunde ijeneun geoui an hae. sigani jinakanikka seoro meoreojyeosseo.
    A

    그래도 완전히 틀어진 건 아니지?

But it's not like things are completely strained, right?geuraedo wanjeonhi teureojin geon aniji?
    B

응, 그냥 각자 바빠져서 그런 것 같아. 그래도 가끔 생각나.

Yeah, I think it's just that we each got busy. Still, I think of him sometimes.eung, geunyang gakja bappajyeoseo geureon geot gata. geuraedo gakkeum saenggakna.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean, evaluating a relationship often requires indirectness to avoid sounding judgmental. Using -는 것 같다 ('it seems') or -더라 (retrospective 'I noticed/experienced') softens your assessment. For example, 우리 사이가 좀 멀어진 것 같아 is gentler than 우리는 멀어졌어. Also, 사이 is broader than 관계: 사이 can mean the bond between two specific people, while 관계 is more formal and often used for work or official relationships. Choose 해요체 with acquaintances and -습니다체 in formal counseling or writing.

    One thing to watch for

Using 멀어지다 to mean 'to become far away in distance' for a person who moved, e.g., 그 사람은 멀어졌어 for 'He went far away.'

Try this instead: 멀어지다 for people usually means emotional distance, not physical. For physical distance, say 그 사람은 멀리 갔어 (He went far away) or 그 사람은 멀리 이사 갔어 (He moved far away). Use 멀어지다 for bonds: 우리는 점점 멀어졌어 (We gradually grew apart).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'We grew closer after traveling together' in casual polite Korean?

    Show a sample answer

같이 여행을 다녀온 후에 우리는 더 가까워졌어.

This uses 가까워지다 in the past tense with -았어. Adding 더 (more) emphasizes the increase. You could also say 여행 덕분에 가까워졌어 (Thanks to the trip, we grew closer), which is equally natural.

2Which verb fits best for a relationship that became strained due to a misunderstanding: 멀어지다 or 틀어지다?

    Show a sample answer

틀어지다 is better: 오해 때문에 사이가 틀어졌어.

틀어지다 implies tension or conflict, while 멀어지다 suggests gradual emotional distance without necessarily a specific conflict. However, if the misunderstanding caused a slow drift, 멀어지다 could also work, but 틀어지다 is more precise for strain.

3Add -아/어 버리다 to express regret: 'We ended up drifting apart.'

    Show a sample answer

    우리는 결국 멀어져 버렸어.

The stem 멀어지- + -어 버리다 becomes 멀어져 버렸어. This adds a nuance of regret or finality. Without 버리다, it is simply 우리는 결국 멀어졌어, which is neutral.

    Take this with you

To evaluate a bond in Korean, use 가까워지다, 멀어지다, and 틀어지다 with 사이 or 관계. Add -아/어 버리다 for regret, and soften with -는 것 같다. Remember that 멀어지다 is about emotional distance, not physical location.
