    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask if something is possible, use '~가 가능한가요?' (ga ganeunghan-gayo?) or '~할 수 있을까요?' (hal su isseulkkayo?). For example, '업그레이드가 가능한가요?' means 'Is an upgrade possible?' and '방을 바꿀 수 있을까요?' means 'Can I change rooms?' The latter is slightly more polite and indirect. To ask about cost, use '얼마인가요?' (eolmaingayo?) meaning 'How much is it?' after the item. For instance, '추가 요금은 얼마인가요?' (How much is the extra charge?). These patterns are essential for polite negotiation.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the hotel reception desk during check-in or when you have already checked in and want to upgrade. It's best to ask politely and directly. If you are a member of the hotel's loyalty program, mention it: '멤버십 회원인데 업그레이드가 가능한가요?' (I'm a member; is an upgrade possible?). If the receptionist says there is an additional charge, you can respond with '추가 요금은 얼마인가요?' to get the amount. If you decide to proceed, say '그럼 업그레이드해 주세요' (Then please upgrade me). Avoid demanding a free upgrade unless you have a strong reason; it may come across as rude.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean hotels, upgrades are often subject to availability and may be offered free to loyalty members or during off-peak times. It's polite to ask indirectly, using '~가 가능한가요?' rather than demanding. Tipping is not customary in Korea, so don't offer a tip for an upgrade; instead, pay the stated fee or accept a complimentary upgrade graciously. Also, using formal speech (존댓말) with staff is expected.

    One thing to watch for

Using '업그레이드 할래요?' (eop-geu-re-i-deu hal-lae-yo?) to ask for an upgrade.

Try this instead: '업그레이드 할래요?' is too casual and can sound like 'I want to upgrade' in a demanding way. Instead, use '업그레이드가 가능한가요?' or '업그레이드해 주실 수 있나요?' to ask politely.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask 'Is an upgrade possible?' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    업그레이드가 가능한가요?

This is the standard polite way to ask. You could also say '업그레이드할 수 있을까요?' which is slightly more indirect and equally polite.

2What phrase would you use to ask 'How much is the additional charge?'

    Show a sample answer

    추가 요금은 얼마인가요?

This directly asks for the amount. Alternatively, '추가 비용이 얼마예요?' is also correct but slightly less formal.

3If the receptionist says there is an extra charge and you agree, what could you say?

    Show a sample answer

    네, 그럼 업그레이드해 주세요.

This means 'Yes, then please upgrade me.' You could also say '추가 요금을 지불하겠습니다.' (I will pay the extra charge.) Both are appropriate.

    Take this with you

Politely ask '업그레이드가 가능한가요?' and clarify costs with '추가 요금은 얼마인가요?' to negotiate a room upgrade smoothly in Korean.
