Korean for Casual Travel Small Talk: Asking and Answering 'Where Are You From?'
Learn to ask 어디에서 왔어요? and understand natural replies about hometowns and countries in casual Korean conversation, with polite and informal variants.

When you meet a Korean speaker while traveling, one of the first friendly questions you will hear is 어디에서 왔어요? (Where are you from?). This lesson teaches you to ask that question, understand common answers, and respond naturally about your own hometown or country. You will practice the difference between the polite -요 style and casual 반말, learn how to say 'I am from...' with 에서 왔어요, and pick up useful follow-up phrases like 'How long have you been in Korea?' and 'What brought you here?' The focus is casual travel conversation, not formal introductions, so you can sound friendly without being overly stiff.
By the end, you can…
- ask someone where they are from using polite and casual Korean.
- answer the question with my country or city using 에서 왔어요.
- understand and respond to simple follow-up questions about travel.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

어디에서 왔어요?
Where are you from?
eo-di-e-seo wa-sseo-yo?
Polite casual question. Use 에서 after a place. Common in travel conversations with strangers or new acquaintances.
저는 미국에서 왔어요.
I'm from the United States.
jeo-neun mi-guk-e-seo wa-sseo-yo.
Replace 미국 with your country. 저는 is a polite 'I' and is safe with people you just met.
어디 사세요?
Where do you live?
eo-di sa-se-yo?
Asks current residence, not origin. Useful after you learn where someone is from.
한국에 얼마나 있었어요?

han-guk-e eol-ma-na i-sseo-sseo-yo?
Past tense polite form. Use with someone who is visiting or staying in Korea.
여행으로 왔어요.
I came for travel.
yeo-haeng-eu-ro wa-sseo-yo.
Answers why you came. 여행으로 means 'for travel' or 'as a trip'.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is [place] + 에서 왔어요. 에서 marks the place you came from, and 왔어요 is the polite past form of 오다 (to come). For example: 서울에서 왔어요 (I'm from Seoul), 캐나다에서 왔어요 (I'm from Canada). To ask, simply put 어디 (where) before 에서: 어디에서 왔어요? In casual 반말 with close friends, you can drop 요 and say 어디에서 왔어? or even 어디서 왔어? The meaning stays the same, but the tone becomes more informal.
When to use it
Use the -요 polite form with people you have just met, including travelers, hosts, or shop staff. It is friendly but not overly formal. Use 반말 only with close friends, people clearly younger than you, or children. If someone asks you first with 반말, you may mirror that style, but when in doubt, stay with -요. Also note that 어디에서 왔어요? can mean 'Where are you from?' or 'Where did you come from just now?' Context makes it clear. If you want to ask specifically about hometown, you can say 고향이 어디예요? (Where is your hometown?).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
안녕하세요! 어디에서 왔어요?
Hello! Where are you from?an-nyeong-ha-se-yo! eo-di-e-seo wa-sseo-yo?저는 호주에서 왔어요. 서울은 처음이에요.
I'm from Australia. It's my first time in Seoul.jeo-neun ho-ju-e-seo wa-sseo-yo. seo-ul-eun cheo-eum-i-e-yo.아, 그래요? 한국에 얼마나 있을 거예요?
Oh, really? How long will you be in Korea?a, geu-rae-yo? han-guk-e eol-ma-na i-sseul geo-ye-yo?일주일 정도 있을 거예요. 여행으로 왔어요.
I'll be here for about a week. I came for travel.il-ju-il jeong-do i-sseul geo-ye-yo. yeo-haeng-eu-ro wa-sseo-yo.A little context goes a long way
Korean conversation often uses age and status to decide speech level, so strangers usually start with polite -요. Asking where someone is from is common and friendly in travel settings, but asking about age, job, or relationship status can feel personal early on. Stick to travel topics first, and let the other person volunteer more.
One thing to watch for
Saying 저는 미국입니다 to mean 'I am from the United States.'
Try this instead: Use 에서 왔어요 for origin: 저는 미국에서 왔어요. The pattern 이에요/입니다 identifies something (저는 학생이에요 = I am a student), but it does not express where you came from. For hometown, you can also say 제 고향은 미국이에요.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

2Someone says 저는 캐나다에서 왔어요. What does it mean?
Show a sample answer
I'm from Canada.
캐나다에서 왔어요 means 'came from Canada.' The person may be Canadian or may have traveled from Canada; context clarifies.
3How would you say 'I came for travel' in polite Korean?
Show a sample answer
여행으로 왔어요.
여행으로 means 'for travel' or 'as a trip,' and 왔어요 is the polite past of 오다. 여행하러 왔어요 is another natural alternative.
Ask 어디에서 왔어요? to start friendly travel talk, answer with [place]에서 왔어요, and keep the polite -요 style until the other person signals a more casual tone.
