Korean Transport Choices: Comparing Trains and Buses at Intermediate Level
Learn to ask 'Should I take the train or the bus?' in Korean, compare speed, cost and comfort, and choose the right transport with natural intermediate phrasing.

When you travel in Korea, you often face a real choice: the train is fast and punctual, but the bus can be cheaper and reach places trains do not. This lesson teaches you to compare transport options in Korean using the pattern A보다 B가 더 ... and the question 기차를 탈까요, 버스를 탈까요? You will practise asking for advice, stating pros and cons, and making a decision politely. All examples use Hangul with Revised Romanization so you can read and say them accurately.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether to take the train or the bus using -(으)ㄹ까요.
- compare two transport options with A보다 B가 더 adjective.
- state pros and cons such as 빠르다, 싸다, 편하다 and 복잡하다.
- make a polite recommendation using -(으)세요.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

기차를 탈까요, 버스를 탈까요?
Should I take the train or the bus?
gi-cha-reul tal-kka-yo, beo-seu-reul tal-kka-yo?
Use when asking a friend, colleague or staff member to help you choose between two concrete options. The verb 타다 means 'to ride' and takes the object particle 를.
기차가 버스보다 더 빨라요.
The train is faster than the bus.
gi-cha-ga beo-seu-bo-da deo ppal-la-yo
The standard comparative pattern: A가 B보다 더 + adjective. 보다 marks the standard of comparison, and 더 is optional but common in speech.
버스는 기차보다 싸지만 복잡해요.
The bus is cheaper than the train, but it is crowded.
beo-seu-neun gi-cha-bo-da ssa-ji-man bok-jap-hae-yo
Use -지만 to contrast a positive and a negative point. This is useful when you want to give a balanced comparison rather than a simple recommendation.
기차역이 여기서 멀어요?
Is the train station far from here?
gi-cha-yeok-i yeo-gi-seo meo-reo-yo?
Asking about distance with 에서 'from' plus 멀다 'to be far'. The answer might be 가까워요 'it is close' or 걸어서 십 분이에요 'it is a ten-minute walk'.
버스를 타는 게 더 편할 것 같아요.
I think taking the bus would be more convenient.
beo-seu-reul ta-neun ge deo pyeon-hal geot ga-ta-yo
Use -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요 to soften your opinion. 타는 게 is a contracted form of 타는 것이, meaning 'taking (the bus)' as a noun.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core comparison pattern is A가/이 B보다 더 + adjective. For example, 기차가 버스보다 더 빨라요 (The train is faster than the bus). If you want to contrast two facts, attach -지만 to the first verb or adjective: 기차는 빠르지만 비싸요 (The train is fast, but expensive). To ask which one you should take, use -(으)ㄹ까요 with the verb 타다: 기차를 탈까요? 버스를 탈까요? This asks for the listener's opinion, not just a fact.
When to use it
Use these patterns when you are actually deciding, not just describing. If you are at a terminal or talking to a friend, 기차를 탈까요, 버스를 탈까요? is natural and polite. When you give a recommendation, use -(으)세요: 기차를 타세요 (Take the train) or 버스를 타세요 (Take the bus). If you are unsure, soften it with -(으)ㄹ 것 같아요: 버스를 타는 게 더 나을 것 같아요 (I think taking the bus would be better). Avoid saying 버스가 더 좋아요 without context; it sounds like a bare preference. Add a reason: 버스가 더 싸서 좋아요 (The bus is better because it is cheaper).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
지금 부산에 가야 하는데, 기차를 탈까요, 버스를 탈까요?
I have to go to Busan now — should I take the train or the bus?ji-geum bu-sa-ne ga-ya ha-neun-de, gi-cha-reul tal-kka-yo, beo-seu-reul tal-kka-yo?기차가 버스보다 더 빨라요. 하지만 기차표가 더 비싸요.
The train is faster than the bus. But train tickets are more expensive.gi-cha-ga beo-seu-bo-da deo ppal-la-yo. ha-ji-man gi-cha-pyo-ga deo bi-ssa-yo.그럼 버스는 얼마나 걸려요? 그리고 버스터미널이 여기서 멀어요?
Then how long does the bus take? And is the bus terminal far from here?geu-reom beo-seu-neun eol-ma-na geol-lyeo-yo? geu-ri-go beo-seu-teo-mi-neol-i yeo-gi-seo meo-reo-yo?버스는 네 시간쯤 걸리고, 터미널은 걸어서 십오 분이에요. 돈을 아끼고 싶으면 버스를 타세요.
The bus takes about four hours, and the terminal is a fifteen-minute walk. If you want to save money, take the bus.beo-seu-neun ne si-gan-jjeum geol-li-go, teo-mi-neol-eun geo-reo-seo si-bo bu-ni-e-yo. do-neul a-kki-go si-peu-myeon beo-seu-reul ta-se-yo.A little context goes a long way
In Korea, trains (KTX, ITX, Saemaeul) are generally valued for punctuality and comfort on long routes, while intercity and express buses often cost less and serve smaller towns. When asking a stranger or staff member, use polite -요 endings and avoid blunt commands. Among close friends, 반말 such as 기차 탈까? is fine, but in stations and customer service, keep the polite forms taught here.
One thing to watch for
Using 에서 instead of 보다 in a comparison, as in 기차에서 버스가 더 빨라요.
Try this instead: Use 보다 to mark the standard of comparison: 기차가 버스보다 더 빨라요 (The train is faster than the bus). 에서 means 'from' or 'at' and does not mark comparison. If you want to say 'from here', use 여기서: 여기서 기차역이 멀어요? (Is the train station far from here?)
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How do you ask 'Should I take the train or the bus?' politely in Korean?
Show a sample answer
기차를 탈까요, 버스를 탈까요?
This uses -(으)ㄹ까요 to ask for the listener's opinion and the object particle 를 with 타다. A valid alternative is 기차를 타는 게 좋을까요, 버스를 타는 게 좋을까요? which is slightly more explicit about asking for a good choice.
2Complete the comparison: 기차가 버스보다 더 ___. (fast)
Show a sample answer
빨라요
빠르다 is an irregular ㅡ verb, so the polite present form is 빨라요, not 빠르어요. The full sentence 기차가 버스보다 더 빨라요 means 'The train is faster than the bus'. Other valid adjectives include 빠릅니다 in formal speech.
3Give one advantage and one disadvantage of the bus compared with the train, using -지만.
Show a sample answer
버스는 기차보다 싸지만 복잡해요.
This uses the comparative 보다 and the contrast ending -지만. It is accurate because buses are often cheaper but can be crowded. A valid alternative is 버스는 기차보다 저렴하지만 시간이 더 걸려요 (The bus is cheaper than the train, but it takes longer).
To compare transport in Korean, use A가 B보다 더 + adjective, contrast with -지만, and ask for a choice with -(으)ㄹ까요. Keep your endings polite when speaking to staff, and always add a reason so your recommendation sounds natural.
