Korean Kiosk Fix: Correcting 포장 to 매장 for Eat-In

Learn to fix a takeout mistake at a Korean kiosk: say 포장 말고 매장으로 바꿔 주세요 and handle payment situations politely.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

At a Korean self-order kiosk, it is easy to tap 포장 (takeout) when you meant 매장 (eat in). This lesson teaches you the exact Korean words for the two options, how to ask staff to change your order politely, and what to say if you have already paid. You will practice a reusable request pattern and learn typical staff responses, so you can resolve the mix-up smoothly without relying on English.

    By the end, you can…

    • distinguish between 매장 and 포장 on a kiosk screen.
    • politely ask staff to change my order from takeout to eat-in.
    • explain that I already paid and ask for the change to be made.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    매장

    eat in; dine in

    mae-jang

Select this on the kiosk when you want to eat at the restaurant. It is the opposite of 포장.

    포장

    takeout; to go

    po-jang

Use this when you want your food packed to take away. If you tapped it by mistake, you will need to change it.

    포장 말고 매장으로 바꿔 주세요.

Please change it to eat-in, not takeout.

    po-jang mal-go mae-jang-eu-ro ba-kkwo ju-se-yo

The key fix request. Use it at the counter when you notice the mistake before or after paying.

    이미 결제했어요.

    I already paid.

    i-mi gyeol-je-hae-sseo-yo

Say this if you have already completed payment and need the staff to adjust your order.

    다시 결제해야 돼요?

Do I need to pay again?

    da-si gyeol-je-hae-ya dwae-yo?

Ask this after explaining the mistake to find out if an additional payment or refund is needed.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 'A 말고 B로/으로 바꿔 주세요' means 'Please change it to B, not A.' It is polite and direct. For example: 포장 말고 매장으로 바꿔 주세요 (Please change it to eat-in, not takeout). You can also use it for other options: 카드 말고 현금으로 바꿔 주세요 (Please change it to cash, not card). The particle 로/으로 attaches to the destination. Use 로 after a vowel and 으로 after a consonant: 매장으로, 현금으로, but 카드로. This pattern works at counters, kiosks, and service desks.

    When to use it

Use this request as soon as you notice the mistake. If you have not paid yet, say it immediately and staff can usually cancel or edit the order on the kiosk. If you have already paid, start with 이미 결제했어요 (I already paid) and then add the change request. Staff may respond with 네, 바꿔 드릴게요 (Yes, I will change it for you) or they might need to call a manager. If a refund is needed, they may say 환불해 드릴게요 (I will refund you). Always stay polite and keep your receipt or order number if you have one.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

저기요, 포장 말고 매장으로 바꿔 주세요.

    Excuse me, please change it from takeout to eat-in.jeo-gi-yo, po-jang mal-go mae-jang-eu-ro ba-kkwo ju-se-yo
    B

    네, 이미 결제하셨어요?

    Yes, have you already paid?ne, i-mi gyeol-je-ha-syeo-sseo-yo?
    A

네, 이미 결제했어요. 다시 결제해야 돼요?

    Yes, I already paid. Do I need to pay again?ne, i-mi gyeol-je-hae-sseo-yo. da-si gyeol-je-hae-ya dwae-yo?
    B

아니요, 여기서 바꿔 드릴게요. 잠시만 기다려 주세요.

    No, I will change it here for you. Please wait a moment.a-ni-yo, yeo-gi-seo ba-kkwo deu-ril-ge-yo. jam-si-man gi-da-ryeo ju-se-yo

A little context goes a long way

In Korea, kiosks are common in fast-food and casual restaurants, and staff are used to fixing order mistakes politely. Using the polite request form with 주세요 and a gentle tone (저기요 to get attention) is appropriate. Avoid raising your voice; a calm explanation works best. If the staff says 잠시만요 (just a moment), wait quietly. Tipping is not expected, and refunds are handled according to store policy, so ask rather than assume.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 포장으로 바꿔 주세요 when you actually want eat-in.

Try this instead: Use 포장 말고 매장으로 바꿔 주세요. The word 말고 means 'not A, but B' and prevents confusion. For example, if you want to change from card to cash, say 카드 말고 현금으로 바꿔 주세요.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Please change it from takeout to eat-in' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    포장 말고 매장으로 바꿔 주세요.

This uses the pattern A 말고 B으로/로 바꿔 주세요. It is polite and clear. You could also add 저기요 at the start to get attention.

2You already paid. What sentence should you say first to explain that?

    Show a sample answer

    이미 결제했어요.

This means 'I already paid.' It prepares the staff to handle a refund or adjustment. You can follow with 다시 결제해야 돼요? to ask if you need to pay again.

3What is the Korean word for 'eat in' on a kiosk?

    Show a sample answer

    매장

매장 means eat in or dine in. It is the opposite of 포장 (takeout). Selecting the right button at the start avoids the problem.

    Take this with you

If you tap 포장 by mistake, politely say 포장 말고 매장으로 바꿔 주세요. If you already paid, start with 이미 결제했어요 and ask 다시 결제해야 돼요? Staff will usually help you fix it.
