Korean for Intermediate Learners: Persuading with '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요' and '~니까'
Learn to lead a group toward agreement in Korean using 'I think we should... because...' patterns, with polite persuasive grammar and a realistic team dialogue.

Persuading in Korean is not just translating 'I think we should.' You need a pattern that softens your claim while still leading the group: '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요' presents a recommendation as a shared judgment, and '~으니까/니까' gives the reason that makes agreement feel logical. This lesson teaches you to build consensus by leading with a proposal, not by negotiating a compromise. You will practice five core phrases, a short dialogue, and three checks so you can steer a team decision politely and clearly.
By the end, you can…
- propose a course of action in Korean using '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요' without sounding bossy.
- give a reason with '~으니까/니까' to persuade others and invite agreement.
- respond to a proposal by agreeing, adding a condition, or asking for confirmation.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

Useful pattern
The core persuasive frame is 'A는 게 좋을 것 같아요, 왜냐하면 B니까요.' A is a verb phrase, and '~는 게' turns it into 'doing A.' Example: '우리 먼저 자료를 보는 게 좋을 것 같아요. 왜냐하면 회의 시간이 짧으니까요.' This means 'I think we should look at the data first, because the meeting is short.' The pattern leads because it names the action and the reason in one turn. You can also use '~는 게 어떨까요?' for a slightly more open proposal: '내일 다시 이야기하는 게 어떨까요?'
When to use it
Use this pattern when you have a clear direction and want the group to adopt it, but you still need to respect hierarchy and group harmony. With peers, '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요' is natural and collaborative. With a supervisor or an older colleague, keep the same pattern but add '혹시' or '제 생각에는' to lower the pressure: '제 생각에는 이 순서가 좋을 것 같아요.' Avoid bare imperatives like '이렇게 하세요' in a consensus-building meeting, because they sound like commands. If someone disagrees, acknowledge first: '그 의견도 이해해요. 그런데 시간이 없으니까 이렇게 하는 게 어떨까요?'
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
오늘 회의에서 새 일정을 정해야 하는데, 어떻게 할까요?

In Korean workplace and group settings, leading a decision often means making your proposal sound like a shared conclusion rather than a personal demand. '~것 같아요' and '~까요?' are not signs of weakness; they are standard tools for maintaining harmony while still guiding the group. Directness increases with closeness and equal status, but with seniors or in formal meetings, keep the softening endings and check agreement explicitly.
One thing to watch for
Using '우리는 이렇게 해야 돼요' as the main persuasive line, thinking it is the direct equivalent of 'I think we should.'
Try this instead: '~해야 돼요' means 'must' and sounds like an obligation or command. For leading consensus, use '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요' instead: '우리 이렇게 하는 게 좋을 것 같아요.' If you need stronger urgency, add a reason: '시간이 없으니까 지금 정하는 게 좋을 것 같아요.'
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Turn this into a polite proposal: 'We should start now.' Use '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요.'

지금 시작하는 게 좋을 것 같아요.
'시작하다' becomes '시작하는 게' before '좋을 것 같아요.' This works for a group proposal; '지금 시작해야 돼요' is also grammatical but sounds like an obligation, not a consensus lead.
2Add a reason to this proposal: '우리 먼저 예산을 확인하는 게 좋을 것 같아요.' Use '~으니까요.'

우리 먼저 예산을 확인하는 게 좋을 것 같아요. 왜냐하면 결정을 빨리 해야 하니까요.
'왜냐하면' introduces the reason, and '~하니까요' softens it in speech. You could also say '예산을 모르면 결정하기 어려우니까요'; both are valid if the reason logically supports the proposal.
3A teammate says '그렇게 하면 시간이 오래 걸릴 것 같아요.' Respond by acknowledging and leading with a modified proposal.

그 의견도 이해해요. 그런데 시간이 없으니까 각 팀에서 한 명씩만 말하는 게 어떨까요?
Acknowledging first ('그 의견도 이해해요') protects harmony, then '그런데' introduces your counter-proposal. '~는 게 어떨까요?' is a slightly more open alternative to '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요.'
To persuade in Korean, lead with '~는 게 좋을 것 같아요' and support it with '~으니까요.' You keep politeness while still steering the group toward your proposal.
