Korean for Receiving Negative Feedback Calmly: Saying 'I'll Take That On Board'
Learn intermediate Korean phrases to acknowledge negative feedback calmly, buy time, and commit to considering it — without promising immediate change or losing composure.

Receiving negative feedback is not the same as responding to it. The hard part is managing your emotions in the moment while showing the other person you have heard them. In Korean, this often means using softened, indirect acknowledgements rather than a blunt 'I understand.' This lesson teaches five intermediate-level phrases that let you say, in effect, 'I'll take that on board,' stay calm, and leave the door open for later reflection. You will practise honorific and polite endings suitable for workplace and formal relationships, and learn why responding with immediate defensiveness or over-apologising can both misfire in Korean professional culture.
By the end, you can…
- acknowledge negative feedback calmly in Korean without promising instant change.
- use indirect, polite endings to buy time and show I am taking feedback seriously.
- distinguish between accepting feedback emotionally and committing to action.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

말씀하신 내용은 잘 새겨듣겠습니다.
I will take what you have said to heart and listen carefully.
malsseumhasin naeyongeun jal saegyeodeutgetseumnida
Formal polite. Literally 'I will engrave and listen to what you said.' Use with senior colleagues or clients when you want to show serious consideration without agreeing yet.
그 부분은 제가 한번 곱씹어 보겠습니다.
I will chew over that part for a while.
geu bubuneun jega hanbeon gopssibeo bogetseumnida
Polite but slightly less formal. '곱씹다' means to ruminate or mull over. Good for a manager or peer when you need time to process criticism.
지적해 주신 점은 마음에 담아두겠습니다.
I will keep the point you raised in mind.
jijeokhae jusin jeomeun maeume damadugesseumnida
Warm and respectful. '지적하다' can sound like 'point out a fault,' so the soft verb '담아두다' (to keep in one's heart/mind) balances it.
우선은 알겠습니다. 조금 더 생각해 보고 말씀드릴게요.
For now, I understand. Let me think a little more and I will get back to you.
useoneun algesseumnida. jogeum deo saenggakhae bogo malsseumdeurilgeyo
Buys time calmly. '우선은' signals a provisional acknowledgement, not full agreement. Use when you need to avoid reacting emotionally on the spot.
감사합니다. 그렇게 받아들이겠습니다.
Thank you. I will take it that way.
gamsahamnida. geureoke badadeurigesseumnida
Short, calm, and non-defensive. '받아들이다' means to accept or take in. Suitable when you want to close the feedback moment politely without further discussion.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
A reliable pattern for taking feedback on board is: [feedback topic] + 은/는 + 잘 새겨듣겠습니다 / 곱씹어 보겠습니다 / 마음에 담아두겠습니다. The topic marker 은/는 sets the feedback apart as something you are holding, not fighting. For example, 말씀하신 내용은 잘 새겨듣겠습니다 (I will take what you said to heart) and 그 부분은 제가 한번 곱씹어 보겠습니다 (I will chew over that part). The future tense -겠습니다 expresses a calm intention, not a promise of immediate action. If you want to be more provisional, add 우선은 (for now) at the start: 우선은 알겠습니다.
When to use it
Use these phrases when the feedback is negative and you feel defensive. In Korean workplace settings, responding with silence or a flat 네, 알겠습니다 can seem dismissive, while excessive apology (죄송합니다, 제가 잘못했습니다) may commit you to fault you have not yet evaluated. The middle path is acknowledgement plus time: 지적해 주신 점은 마음에 담아두겠습니다 (I will keep the point you raised in mind) or 조금 더 생각해 보고 말씀드릴게요 (I will think more and get back to you). This keeps the relationship intact and gives you space to respond thoughtfully later.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
이번 보고서는 전체적으로 논리가 좀 약한 것 같아요.
Overall, the logic in this report seems a bit weak.ibeon bogoseoneun jeonchejeogeuro nonriga jom yakhan geot gatayo네, 말씀하신 내용은 잘 새겨듣겠습니다. 우선은 알겠습니다.
Yes, I will take what you have said to heart. For now, I understand.ne, malsseumhasin naeyongeun jal saegyeodeutgetseumnida. useoneun algesseumnida네. 너무 기분 나빠하지는 마세요. 피드백이니까요.
Okay. Don't feel too bad about it. It's feedback, after all.ne. neomu gibun nappahajineun maseyo. pideubaginikkayo감사합니다. 그 부분은 제가 한번 곱씹어 보고 조금 더 생각해 보고 말씀드릴게요.
Thank you. I will chew over that part and think a little more, then get back to you.gamsahamnida. geu bubuneun jega hanbeon gopssibeo bogo jogeum deo saenggakhae bogo malsseumdeurilgeyoA little context goes a long way
In Korean professional settings, direct emotional reactions to negative feedback can be read as immaturity, while total silence can seem like sulking. A calm, formulaic acknowledgement such as 말씀하신 내용은 잘 새겨듣겠습니다 signals respect for the speaker's position and keeps the relationship smooth. Note that -겠습니다 is not a promise of action; it is a polite intention. If you actually plan to change something, say so separately after you have thought it through.
One thing to watch for
Responding with a flat 네, 알겠습니다 or 죄송합니다, 제가 잘못했습니다 immediately after negative feedback.
Try this instead: A flat 네, 알겠습니다 can sound dismissive, and an immediate apology may admit fault before you have assessed it. Instead, use a phrase that acknowledges without committing: 지적해 주신 점은 마음에 담아두겠습니다 (I will keep the point you raised in mind) or 우선은 알겠습니다. 조금 더 생각해 보고 말씀드릴게요 (For now I understand. Let me think more and get back to you).
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1Your manager says your presentation was too long. You want to show you heard the feedback but need time to process it. What do you say?

말씀하신 내용은 잘 새겨듣겠습니다. 조금 더 생각해 보고 말씀드릴게요.
This acknowledges the feedback with the respectful pattern 잘 새겨듣겠습니다 and buys time with 조금 더 생각해 보고 말씀드릴게요. Other valid answers include 그 부분은 제가 한번 곱씹어 보겠습니다, as long as the tone stays calm and non-defensive.
2A colleague points out a mistake in your work. You want to keep it in mind without admitting fault yet. Which phrase fits?

지적해 주신 점은 마음에 담아두겠습니다.
This uses the soft verb 담아두다 (to keep in mind) and avoids a direct apology or admission. 우선은 알겠습니다 is also acceptable if you want to signal provisional acknowledgement.
3You want to close the feedback moment politely and calmly without further discussion. What short phrase works?

감사합니다. 그렇게 받아들이겠습니다.
This thanks the speaker and states you will take it that way, using 받아들이다 (to accept). It is short and non-defensive. If you need more time, use the longer phrase with 곱씹어 보겠습니다 instead.
When negative feedback hits, stay calm and use a Korean acknowledgement that holds the feedback without promising instant change: 말씀하신 내용은 잘 새겨듣겠습니다 or 지적해 주신 점은 마음에 담아두겠습니다. Add 우선은 or 조금 더 생각해 보고 말씀드릴게요 to buy time respectfully.
