Korean at the Café Pickup Counter: Confirming a Drink Is Yours Before You Take It

Learn Korean phrases to check whether a called drink is really yours, ask what a drink is, and respond politely if you picked up the wrong cup.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

At a busy café pickup counter, staff often call out a name or a drink name that sounds close to yours. Before you take the cup, you can verify it politely in Korean. This lesson gives you reusable patterns for confirming ownership with 주문한 거, checking the drink itself with 제 거예요?, and asking what a drink is with 이거 무슨 음료예요? You will also learn what to say if you accidentally take the wrong cup, so the exchange stays calm and clear.

    By the end, you can…

    • confirm whether a drink at the pickup counter is the one I ordered.
    • ask what a drink is before taking it.
    • apologize and return a cup politely if I took the wrong one.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

Excuse me, may I check the drink I ordered?

    jeo-gi-yo, ju-mun-han geo hwagin-hae-do doel-kka-yo?

Polite opener when the counter is busy and you are not sure which cup is yours.

    Is this mine?

    i-geo je geo-ye-yo?

Point to the cup or gesture toward it while asking. 제 거예요 is the polite default.

    What drink is this?

    i-geo mu-seun eum-ryo-ye-yo?

Use when the cup has no clear label or the name called does not match what you remember.

What I ordered is an iced Americano.

    je-ga ju-mun-han geon a-i-seu a-me-ri-ka-no-ye-yo.

State your actual order so staff can compare it with the cup in front of you.

Sorry, I took the wrong one.

    joe-song-hae-yo, je-ga jal-mot gajyeo-gasseo-yo.

Use if you already picked up a cup that was not yours and are returning it.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 주문한 거 means 'the thing I ordered' and lets you refer to your drink without naming it. Add 확인해도 될까요? to ask permission to check: 주문한 거 확인해도 될까요? If you want to be more specific, say 제가 주문한 건 아이스 라떼예요, inserting your actual drink after 건. This keeps the focus on the order, not on accusing staff of a mistake.

    When to use it

Use 이거 제 거예요? when a cup is placed near you or a name close to yours is called. Use 이거 무슨 음료예요? when you cannot tell from the cup or label. If the staff says a name that sounds similar, you can respond 저는 민지예요, 제 거 맞아요? to confirm without sounding annoyed. If you already took the wrong cup, say 죄송해요, 제가 잘못 가져갔어요 and hand it back.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Excuse me, did you just call Minji? Is this mine?jeo-gi-yo, bang-geum min-ji-ra-go bureu-syeot-jyo? i-geo je geo-ye-yo?
    B

    Yes, one iced latte. Is your name Minji?ne, a-i-seu ra-tte han jan-i-yo. seong-ham-i min-ji majeu-se-yo?
    A

    Oh, I am not Minji, I am Minju. What drink is this?a, jeo-neun min-ji-ga a-ni-go min-ju-ye-yo. i-geo mu-seun eum-ryo-ye-yo?
    B

    It is an iced latte. Sorry, yours is here, Minju.a-i-seu ra-tte-ye-yo. joe-song-hae-yo, min-ju-nim geo-neun yeo-gi isseo-yo.

A little context goes a long way

At Korean cafés, staff may call a name, an order number, or a drink name. Using 저기요 to get attention and 제 거예요? to confirm is polite and normal. Avoid grabbing a cup silently; a short check prevents mix-ups and is not considered rude. If you took the wrong cup, a brief apology with 죄송해요 is enough.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 이거 내 거야? to staff, which sounds too casual and can come across as abrupt.

Try this instead: Use the polite form 이거 제 거예요? or 이거 제 거 맞아요? with staff you do not know. For example, 이거 제 거예요? is safe in most café situations.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You hear a name that sounds like yours and a cup is set down. What polite question confirms it is yours?

    Show a sample answer

This directly asks 'Is this mine?' and is polite with 제. 이거 제 거 맞아요? is also acceptable and slightly more confirming.

2The cup has no label and you are not sure what it is. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

This asks what drink it is. You could also say 이거 무슨 음료인지 알 수 있을까요? for a more indirect polite request.

3You accidentally took someone else's cup and are returning it. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

This apologizes and states you took it by mistake. 죄송해요, 이거 제 거 아니에요 is another clear option.

    Take this with you

Before you take a cup, confirm with 이거 제 거예요? If you are unsure what it is, ask If you took the wrong one, say A short polite check keeps the pickup counter calm.
