Korean Café Etiquette: Asking About Your Personal Cup in Korean

Learn to ask if a café accepts your tumbler or personal cup, and how to order your drink to match it. Polite Korean for intermediate learners.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

Bringing your own tumbler to a café is common in Korea, but policies vary by shop. This lesson teaches you how to politely ask staff whether they accept personal cups, how to order your drink to be made in your cup, and what to expect regarding size and rinsing. You will learn key vocabulary like 텀블러 (tumbler) and 개인 컵 (personal cup), and the essential question 여기 담아 주실 수 있어요? (Can you put it in here?). By the end, you will be able to navigate this situation smoothly and respectfully, without assuming any specific café's policy.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a café staff member if they accept personal cups or tumblers.
    • order a drink and request it to be made in my own cup.
    • ask about size limits and whether rinsing is needed.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    텀블러

    tumbler

    teom-beul-leo

Refers to a reusable tumbler, often insulated. Use when asking about bringing your own cup.

    개인 컵

    personal cup

    gae-in keop

A more general term for any cup you bring from home. Some cafés use this term in signs.

    여기 담아 주실 수 있어요?

Can you put it in here?

    yeo-gi da-ma ju-sil su i-sseo-yo?

Polite request to have your drink made in your cup. Use while holding out your cup.

    텀블러 사용 가능해요?

Is it okay to use a tumbler?

    teom-beul-leo sa-yong ga-neung-hae-yo?

Direct question to ask if the café accepts tumblers. Suitable for polite conversation.

    사이즈 제한 있어요?

    Is there a size limit?

    sa-i-jeu je-han i-sseo-yo?

Ask if your cup's size matters, e.g., if it's too large or small for their machines.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '-아/어 주실 수 있어요?' is a polite way to ask someone to do something for you. It combines the verb stem with '-아/어 주시다' (to do for someone) and '-ㄹ 수 있어요?' (can you?). For example, 여기 담아 주실 수 있어요? means 'Can you put it in here for me?' You can use this with other verbs: 데워 주실 수 있어요? (Can you heat it up?), 씻어 주실 수 있어요? (Can you wash it?). This pattern is appropriate for service interactions and shows respect.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you want to confirm if the café accepts personal cups before ordering. Start with 텀블러 사용 가능해요? or 개인 컵 돼요? (Is a personal cup okay?). If they say yes, you can then order and say 여기 담아 주실 수 있어요? while handing over your cup. If you're unsure about size, ask 사이즈 제한 있어요? Some cafés may ask you to rinse your cup first; you can respond with 네, 씻어서 드릴게요 (Yes, I'll wash it and give it to you). Always keep a polite tone.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    안녕하세요, 텀블러 사용 가능해요?

    Hello, is it okay to use a tumbler?an-nyeong-ha-se-yo, teom-beul-leo sa-yong ga-neung-hae-yo?
    B

네, 가능해요. 주문하실 음료를 여기 담아 드릴까요?

    Yes, it's possible. Shall I put your drink in here?ne, ga-neung-hae-yo. ju-mun-ha-sil eum-ryo-reul yeo-gi da-ma deu-ril-kka-yo?
    A

네, 여기 담아 주실 수 있어요? 사이즈 제한은 없나요?

Yes, can you put it in here? Is there no size limit?ne, yeo-gi da-ma ju-sil su i-sseo-yo? sa-i-jeu je-han-eun eom-na-yo?
    B

제한은 없어요. 다만 사용 전에 한 번 헹궈 주세요.

    There's no limit. Just please rinse it once before use.je-han-eun eom-neun-yo. da-man sa-yong jeon-e han beon heng-gwo ju-se-yo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korea, many cafés encourage personal cups for environmental reasons, but policies differ. Some offer discounts, others may not accept cups for certain drinks. Always ask politely rather than assuming. The term 텀블러 is widely understood, but 개인 컵 is also used. Staff may ask you to rinse your cup if it's visibly dirty; this is a hygiene courtesy, not a rejection.

    One thing to watch for

Using the casual phrase 여기 담아 줘 (Put it in here) to staff.

Try this instead: Use the polite form 여기 담아 주실 수 있어요? or 여기 담아 주세요. The casual form is only for close friends or children. For example, 여기 담아 주실 수 있어요? is appropriate for service interactions.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask a café staff if they accept personal cups?

    Show a sample answer

    개인 컵 사용 가능해요?

This is a polite and direct way. You could also say 텀블러 사용 가능해요? if you have a tumbler. Both are acceptable.

2What do you say when handing your cup to the barista?

    Show a sample answer

    여기 담아 주실 수 있어요?

This politely asks them to put the drink in your cup. You can also add 사이즈 제한 있어요? if concerned about size.

3How do you ask if there is a size limit for your cup?

    Show a sample answer

    사이즈 제한 있어요?

This question is clear and polite. Alternatively, you could ask 이 컵 사이즈 괜찮아요? (Is this cup size okay?).

    Take this with you

When bringing your own cup to a Korean café, politely ask 텀블러 사용 가능해요? or 개인 컵 돼요? first. Then order and say 여기 담아 주실 수 있어요? while handing your cup. Be prepared to rinse it if asked. Always use polite language.
