Korean for Pottery Workshops: Asking How Long and Where to Leave Your Piece to Dry

Learn polite Korean phrases to ask staff how many days a newly shaped piece needs to dry and whether you can leave it at the studio.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

After you finish shaping a piece at a Korean pottery workshop, you need to know how long it should dry and where to leave it. This lesson gives you polite informal Korean questions for that exact moment. You will use 건조 (geonjo, drying), 말리다 (mallida, to dry), and 며칠 (myeochil, how many days). The patterns 며칠 동안 말려야 해요? and 여기 두고 가면 돼요? let you ask staff directly without sounding demanding. You will also learn how to check whether the piece should stay at the studio or go home with you, and how to confirm the drying spot.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask how many days a piece needs to dry using 며칠 and 말리다.
    • ask whether I can leave my piece at the workshop using 두고 가다.
    • confirm where to put the piece using 어디에 두면 돼요?
    • understand a simple answer about drying time and location.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    며칠 동안 말려야 해요?

How many days does it need to dry?

    myeochil dong-an mallyeoya haeyo?

Use this right after shaping, when you want a number of days. 며칠 means 'how many days' and 동안 means 'for/during'.

    여기 두고 가면 돼요?

Is it okay if I leave it here and go?

    yeogi dugo gamyeon dwaeyo?

Use this to ask whether you can leave the piece at the workshop. 두고 가다 means 'leave it and go'.

    어디에 두면 돼요?

    Where should I put it?

    eodie dumyeon dwaeyo?

Use this when staff say you can leave it, but you need the exact spot. 두면 돼요? means 'is it okay if I put it?'

    건조는 며칠 걸려요?

How many days does drying take?

    geonjoneun myeochil geollyeoyo?

This uses 건조 as a noun. It is a slightly more neutral way to ask about drying time.

    아직 말라야 해요?

Does it still need to dry?

    ajik mallaya haeyo?

Use this to check whether the piece is already dry enough. 말라야 해요 comes from 마르다 (to dry, to become dry).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 며칠 동안 말려야 해요? combines 며칠 (how many days), 동안 (for/during), and 말려야 해요 (needs to dry). You can replace 며칠 with a number: 이틀 동안 말려야 해요? means 'Does it need to dry for two days?' The verb 말리다 means 'to dry something' and becomes 말려야 해요 in the 'need to' pattern. For location, use 어디에 두면 돼요? with 두다 (to put/leave). 여기 두고 가면 돼요? uses 두고 가다, meaning 'leave it and go'. These are polite informal forms ending in -요, suitable for workshop staff.

    When to use it

Use these questions after you have shaped your piece and the staff are about to move on. Start with 며칠 동안 말려야 해요? to get a time frame. If you want to leave it at the studio, ask 여기 두고 가면 돼요? Then ask 어디에 두면 돼요? to find the exact shelf or drying area. If staff mention 건조, you can respond with 건조는 며칠 걸려요? to confirm. Avoid asking about firing or glazing here; stay on drying. If you plan to take the piece home, say 집에 가져가도 돼요? instead of 여기 두고 가면 돼요?

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    B

    네, 저 선반에 두면 돼요.

Yes, you can put it on that shelf.ne, jeo seonbane dumyeon dwaeyo.

A little context goes a long way

In Korean pottery workshops, staff often use polite informal Korean with adult learners, mixing -요 endings with everyday vocabulary. Asking about drying time and location is normal and shows respect for the studio's process. Do not assume you can leave work without asking; use 여기 두고 가면 돼요? to check. If staff give a range like 사나흘, it is an estimate, not a guarantee. Address staff with a slight bow and a soft tone; direct questions are fine when phrased with -요.

    One thing to watch for

Using 말려요? to ask 'Does it need to dry?' when you mean 'How long does it need to dry?'

Try this instead: 말려요? means 'Does it dry?' or 'Are you drying it?' For drying time, use 며칠 동안 말려야 해요? or 건조는 며칠 걸려요? For example, ask 며칠 동안 말려야 해요? to get a number of days.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Ask staff how many days your piece needs to dry.

    Show a sample answer

    며칠 동안 말려야 해요?

This uses 며칠 (how many days), 동안 (for), and 말려야 해요 (needs to dry). You could also ask 건조는 며칠 걸려요? with a similar meaning.

2Ask whether you can leave your piece at the workshop and go home.

    Show a sample answer

    여기 두고 가면 돼요?

두고 가다 means 'leave it and go'. If you want to take it home instead, ask 집에 가져가도 돼요?

3Staff say you can leave it, but you need to know where. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    어디에 두면 돼요?

This asks 'Where should I put it?' You could also point and ask 여기에 두면 돼요? meaning 'Is it okay to put it here?'

    Take this with you

After shaping, ask 며칠 동안 말려야 해요? for drying time, 여기 두고 가면 돼요? to leave it, and 어디에 두면 돼요? for the spot. Keep it polite with -요 endings.
