Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you arrive in a Korean city, the tourist information center (관광 안내소, gwangwang annaeso) is where you pick up maps, ask about buses, and get free advice. This lesson teaches you one core question — 관광 안내소가 어디예요? — plus the words for maps, English service, and opening hours, so you can find the office and use it once you are inside. You will practice polite -요 style, which is safe with strangers of any age in public settings.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask where the tourist information center is in polite Korean.
    • understand simple directions and service words staff may say at a tourist information center.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    관광 안내소가 어디예요?

Where is the tourist information center?

    gwang-gwang an-nae-so-ga eo-di-ye-yo?

The standard polite question. Use it with staff at a station, hotel desk, or convenience store.

    지도 있어요?

    Do you have a map?

    ji-do i-sseo-yo?

Literally 'Is there a map?' Useful at the counter when you want a free paper map.

    영어 할 수 있어요?

    Can you speak English?

    yeong-eo hal su i-sseo-yo?

Ask this politely before switching languages. Staff may answer 조금 (jo-geum, 'a little').

    몇 시에 문을 열어요?

    What time do you open?

    myeot si-e mun-eul yeo-reo-yo?

Use for opening hours. For closing time, say 몇 시에 문을 닫아요? (myeot si-e mun-eul da-da-yo?).

    여기에서 버스로 어떻게 가요?

How do I get there by bus from here?

    yeo-gi-e-seo beo-seu-ro eo-tteo-ke ga-yo?

Ask after you have a map or a destination name. Replace 버스 (beoseu) with 지하철 (jihacheol, 'subway') if needed.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern [place] + 이/가 어디예요? means 'Where is [place]?' The particle 이 (i) comes after a consonant, and 가 (ga) after a vowel. 관광 안내소 ends in a vowel (소, so), so it takes 가: 관광 안내소가 어디예요? If you ask about a word ending in a consonant, such as 화장실 (hwajangsil, 'restroom'), use 이: 화장실이 어디예요? (hwajang-sil-i eo-di-ye-yo?). You can drop the subject and simply say 어디예요? when the topic is already clear.

    When to use it

Use these questions with staff at tourist information centers, subway stations, hotels, and large stores. The -요 (yo) ending is polite and works with strangers in most public situations. If you are speaking to a close friend, the casual form 어디야? (eo-di-ya?) is possible, but learners should keep -요 with staff. When staff answer, listen for direction words such as 왼쪽 (oen-jjok, 'left'), 오른쪽 (oreunjjok, 'right'), and 직진 (jikjin, 'straight ahead'). If you do not understand, say 다시 한번 말해 주세요 (da-si han-beon mal-hae ju-se-yo, 'Please say that one more time').

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    안녕하세요, 관광 안내소가 어디예요?

Hello, where is the tourist information center?an-nyeong-ha-se-yo, gwang-gwang an-nae-so-ga eo-di-ye-yo?
    B

    저기 왼쪽에 있어요. 지하철역 옆이에요.

It is over there on the left. It is next to the subway station.jeo-gi oen-jjok-e i-sseo-yo. ji-ha-cheol-yeok yeop-i-e-yo.
    A

감사합니다. 거기에서 지도 받을 수 있어요?

    Thank you. Can I get a map there?gam-sa-ham-ni-da. geo-gi-e-seo ji-do ba-deul su i-sseo-yo?
    B

네, 무료 지도가 있어요. 영어 안내도 있어요.

    Yes, there are free maps. There is English information too.ne, mu-ryo ji-do-ga i-sseo-yo. yeong-eo an-nae-do i-sseo-yo.

A little context goes a long way

Korean tourist information centers are usually staffed and free, and many are marked with a lowercase 'i' sign. Staff may use honorific polite speech with you, so answering with -요 or -습니다 forms is appropriate. If you speak English, ask 영어 할 수 있어요? first rather than assuming; some staff speak basic English, and others may use a translation app.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 관광 안내소 어디예요? with no particle, or using 이 after a vowel, as in 관광 안내소이 어디예요?

Try this instead: Use the correct subject particle: 관광 안내소가 어디예요? The word 안내소 ends in a vowel, so 가 is correct. 이 is used after a consonant, as in 화장실이 어디예요? Dropping the particle is common in casual speech, but the full form is clearer for beginners.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Ask a station staff member where the tourist information center is.

    Show a sample answer

    관광 안내소가 어디예요?

This is the polite standard question. You could also add 실례합니다 (sil-lye-ham-ni-da, 'Excuse me') before it to get attention.

2You need a free paper map at the counter. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    지도 있어요?

This asks whether a map is available. If you want to be more specific, say 무료 지도 있어요? (mu-ryo ji-do i-sseo-yo?, 'Do you have a free map?').

3You want to know the opening time. What question fits?

    Show a sample answer

    몇 시에 문을 열어요?

This asks 'What time do you open?' For closing time, use 몇 시에 문을 닫아요? Both are polite and appropriate at an information desk.

    Take this with you

Memorize 관광 안내소가 어디예요? as your core question, then add 지도 있어요? and 영어 할 수 있어요? to get help once you arrive.
