Learn to ask 'Where can I rent a car?' in Korean, understand rental requirements, and handle a basic counter conversation with polite elementary phrases.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

In this lesson you will learn a single practical skill: asking where you can rent a car in Korean, and understanding the basic requirements a rental clerk may mention. Korean has no articles like 'a' or 'the', and verbs change form depending on politeness level, so we will use the polite -요 style that is safe with strangers. You will learn the key question, useful nouns such as 'car' and 'driver's license', and how to ask about age and license requirements. All Korean is written in Hangul with Revised Romanization so you can read and say it accurately.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask 'Where can I rent a car?' in polite Korean.
    • understand and ask about basic rental requirements such as a driver's license and age.
    • say I want to rent a car for one day and ask how much it costs.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    차를 어디에서 빌릴 수 있어요?

Where can I rent a car?

    cha-reul eo-di-e-seo bil-lil su i-sseo-yo?

The most direct and useful question. 차를 is 'car' with the object marker 를. Use this at a hotel desk or information counter.

    렌터카를 빌리고 싶어요.

I want to rent a rental car.

    ren-teo-ka-reul bil-li-go si-peo-yo.

렌터카 is the common Korean word for a rental car. Use this to state your goal before asking details.

    운전면허증이 필요해요?

    Do I need a driver's license?

    un-jeon-myeon-heo-jeung-i pil-yo-hae-yo?

운전면허증 means 'driver's license'. This asks whether it is required. Answer yes with 네, 필요해요.

    나이가 어떻게 되세요?

How old are you? / What is your age?

    na-i-ga eo-tteo-ke doe-se-yo?

A polite way a clerk may ask your age, because rental companies often have a minimum age. Answer with 제 나이는 ...살이에요.

    하루에 얼마예요?

How much is it per day?

    ha-ru-e eol-ma-ye-yo?

하루 means 'one day'. Use this to ask the daily price. For several days, say 이틀 (two days) or 사흘 (three days).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 'noun + 을/를 빌릴 수 있어요?' meaning 'Can I rent ...?' The verb 빌리다 means 'to borrow' or 'to rent'. With 수 있어요 it expresses possibility. For example, 차를 빌릴 수 있어요? means 'Can I rent a car?' and 자전거를 빌릴 수 있어요? means 'Can I rent a bicycle?' To ask 'where', put 어디에서 at the start: 어디에서 차를 빌릴 수 있어요? The object marker 를 follows a vowel-final noun and 을 follows a consonant-final noun, so 차를 but 렌터카를 is also fine because 렌터카 ends in a vowel.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at a rental counter, a hotel front desk, or an airport information desk. Start with 실례합니다 (excuse me) to get attention politely. If you want to be more formal with staff, you can say 차를 어디에서 빌릴 수 있습니까? but the -요 version is perfectly polite and easier. When a clerk gives an answer, listen for words like 면허증 (license), 나이 (age), 보험 (insurance), and 예약 (reservation). If you do not understand, say 다시 한번 말씀해 주세요, which means 'Please say that again.'

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

실례합니다. 차를 어디에서 빌릴 수 있어요?

    Excuse me. Where can I rent a car?sil-lye-ham-ni-da. cha-reul eo-di-e-seo bil-lil su i-sseo-yo?
    B

공항 1층에서 빌릴 수 있어요. 운전면허증이 필요해요.

You can rent one on the first floor of the airport. You need a driver's license.gong-hyang il-cheung-e-seo bil-lil su i-sseo-yo. un-jeon-myeon-heo-jeung-i pil-yo-hae-yo.
    A

    네. 하루에 얼마예요?

Okay. How much is it per day?ne. ha-ru-e eol-ma-ye-yo?
    B

하루에 오만 원이에요. 나이가 어떻게 되세요?

It is fifty thousand won per day. How old are you?ha-ru-e o-man wo-ni-e-yo. na-i-ga eo-tteo-ke doe-se-yo?

A little context goes a long way

Korean politeness matters more than grammar perfection here. The -요 ending is polite and safe with rental staff, while dropping it can sound rude. Staff may ask your age because Korean rental companies often require drivers to be at least 21 or 26, and some charge a young-driver fee. An international driving permit is commonly requested alongside your home license, so have both ready.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 차를 빌려주세요 to mean 'Please rent me a car.'

Try this instead: 빌려주세요 means 'please lend me', which sounds like a favor, not a business rental. For renting, use 빌리고 싶어요 ('I want to rent') or 빌릴 수 있어요? ('Can I rent?'). For example, 렌터카를 빌리고 싶어요 is natural at a rental counter.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Where can I rent a car?' in polite Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    차를 어디에서 빌릴 수 있어요?

This uses 어디에서 for 'where' and 빌릴 수 있어요 for 'can rent'. 렌터카를 어디에서 빌릴 수 있어요? is also correct and slightly more specific.

2A clerk asks 운전면허증이 필요해요? What are they asking about?

    Show a sample answer

They are asking whether a driver's license is needed.

운전면허증 means 'driver's license' and 필요해요 means 'is needed'. You can answer 네, 있어요 ('Yes, I have one') or 아니요, 없어요 ('No, I don't have one').

3How do you ask the daily rental price?

    Show a sample answer

    하루에 얼마예요?

하루 means 'one day' and 얼마예요 means 'how much is it'. For two days you can ask 이틀에 얼마예요? and for three days 사흘에 얼마예요?

    Take this with you

Memorize 차를 어디에서 빌릴 수 있어요? and keep 운전면허증 (driver's license) and 나이 (age) ready, because Korean rental staff often ask about both before handing over the keys.
