Korean for the Tailor: Fixing a Twisted Sleeve Lining

Learn Korean phrases to tell a tailor that a jacket's inner lining twists when you put your arm through, and to ask politely for a re-check.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

When you pick up a jacket from a repair shop, the outside can look perfect while the inside betrays you: the sleeve lining twists the moment you push your arm through. In Korean, the key word is 안감 (angam), the inner lining, and the key verb is 꼬이다 (kkoiida), to get twisted or tangled. This lesson gives you a polite, precise way to describe that problem at the counter and ask the staff to look at it again. You will practice the request 안감이 꼬여서 다시 봐 주세요, learn to point out where the twisting happens, and pick up useful clothing words for coats, blazers, and lined skirts. The register throughout is polite informal (해요체), which is standard for everyday service situations in Korea.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a twisted sleeve lining using 안감 and 꼬이다.
    • politely ask a tailor to re-check a repair with 다시 봐 주세요.
    • name common lined garments such as 코트, 블레이저, and 안감 있는 치마.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    안감

    inner lining

    an-gam

The fabric layer inside a jacket, coat, or skirt. Use it when the problem is on the inside, not the outer shell.

    안감이 꼬여서 다시 봐 주세요.

The lining is twisted, so please take another look.

    an-ga-mi kko-yeo-seo da-si bwa ju-se-yo

Your core request at the counter. 꼬여서 links the problem to the request; 다시 봐 주세요 is a polite way to ask for a re-check.

    팔을 넣으면 소매 안감이 돌아갔어요.

When I put my arm in, the sleeve lining has turned around.

    pa-reul neo-eu-myeon so-mae an-ga-mi do-ra-ga-sseo-yo

Describes the exact moment the problem appears. 돌아갔어요 means it has turned or rotated out of place.

    이 부분 좀 봐 주시겠어요?

Could you take a look at this part?

    i bu-bun jom bwa ju-si-ge-sseo-yo

Softer and more deferential than 봐 주세요. Use it when you want to be extra polite to staff.

수선 맡긴 거 다시 확인하고 싶어요.

I'd like to check again the item I left for alterations.

    su-seon mat-gin geo da-si hwa-gin-ha-go si-peo-yo

Useful when you are at the counter with a receipt or claim ticket and want to reopen the repair.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern noun + 이/가 + verb + 아/어서 + request lets you state a problem and ask for action in one polite sentence. 안감이 꼬여서 다시 봐 주세요 means 'the lining is twisted, so please look again.' You can swap the noun and verb: 소매가 돌아가서 다시 봐 주세요 ('the sleeve has turned, so please look again'). The ending -아/어서 links cause and request naturally, and 다시 봐 주세요 keeps the tone polite without sounding demanding.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at a 수선집 (alteration shop) or a dry cleaner that also does repairs, right after you notice the problem. Point to the sleeve as you say 팔을 넣으면 소매 안감이 돌아갔어요. If the staff member seems busy, soften the request with 이 부분 좀 봐 주시겠어요. If you already paid and left the item, say 수선 맡긴 거 다시 확인하고 싶어요. Avoid demanding free rework; simply describe the issue and ask them to check.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

안녕하세요. 지난주에 수선 맡긴 재킷을 찾으러 왔는데요.

    Hello. I'm here to pick up the jacket I left for alterations last week.an-nyeong-ha-se-yo. ji-nan-ju-e su-seon mat-gin jae-ki-seul cha-jeu-reo wan-neun-de-yo.
    B

네, 잠시만요. 여기 있습니다. 한번 입어 보세요.

    Yes, one moment. Here it is. Try it on.ne, jam-si-man-nyo. yeo-gi it-seum-ni-da. han-beon i-beo bo-se-yo.
    A

팔을 넣으면 소매 안감이 돌아갔어요. 안감이 꼬여서 다시 봐 주세요.

When I put my arm in, the sleeve lining has turned. The lining is twisted, so please take another look.pa-reul neo-eu-myeon so-mae an-ga-mi do-ra-ga-sseo-yo. an-ga-mi kko-yeo-seo da-si bwa ju-se-yo.
    B

아, 그러네요. 소매 안감을 다시 잡아 드릴게요. 잠시만 기다려 주세요.

    Ah, you're right. I'll redo the sleeve lining for you. Please wait a moment.a, geu-reo-ne-yo. so-mae an-ga-meul da-si ja-ba deu-ril-ge-yo. jam-si-man gi-da-ryeo ju-se-yo.

A little context goes a long way

Korean service interactions usually stay polite and indirect. 다시 봐 주세요 is a request, not a complaint, and it works well even when you are mildly frustrated. Staff may respond with 그러네요 or 아, 죄송합니다 before offering a fix. Bringing the receipt or claim ticket helps, but the conversation itself should stay calm and specific rather than raising your voice.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 안감이 돌아갔어요 when you mean the lining is twisted inside the sleeve.

Try this instead: 돌아갔어요 can mean 'turned' or 'went around,' but for fabric that is bunched or twisted, 꼬였어요 is more precise. Say 안감이 꼬여서 다시 봐 주세요. Use 돌아갔어요 when the lining has rotated out of position, as in 소매 안감이 돌아갔어요.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'the lining is twisted, so please take another look' in polite Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    안감이 꼬여서 다시 봐 주세요.

This uses 안감 (lining), 꼬여서 (because it is twisted), and 다시 봐 주세요 (please look again). You could also say 안감이 꼬였어요, 다시 봐 주시겠어요? for a slightly softer tone.

2Which word means 'inner lining,' and which word means 'sleeve'?

    Show a sample answer

안감 means inner lining; 소매 means sleeve.

Together, 소매 안감 refers to the sleeve lining. Remember that 안 means 'inside,' so 안감 is the inside layer of a garment.

3You want to ask staff to check the part you are pointing at, very politely. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    이 부분 좀 봐 주시겠어요?

This is a polite request using 봐 주시겠어요. Adding 좀 softens it. 이 부분 means 'this part,' and you can point while saying it.

    Take this with you

At the tailor, name the inside problem clearly: 안감이 꼬여서 다시 봐 주세요. Point to the sleeve, describe when it happens, and keep the request polite.
