Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you're deep into a craft project in Japan, running out of a key material can be frustrating. This lesson teaches you exactly how to ask for more materials or find out where to purchase them. You'll learn two essential sentence patterns: 材料をもう少しもらえますか (Can I get a little more material?) and 追加で買えますか (Can I buy more?). We'll also cover key vocabulary like 材料 (materials) and 追加 (addition), and practice a realistic scenario at a workshop. By the end, you'll be able to handle this situation politely and effectively, keeping your creative flow uninterrupted.

    By the end, you can…

    • politely ask for more of a material at a craft workshop.
    • ask whether additional materials can be purchased and where.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    材料をもう少しもらえますか。

Could I get a little more material?

Zairyō o mō sukoshi moraemasu ka.

Use this when you need more of a material that is provided by the workshop, such as clay or paper. It's polite and direct. Note that もらえますか asks whether you can receive it, so it fits supplies that are handed out rather than sold.

    追加で買えますか。

    Can I buy more?

    Tsuika de kaemasu ka.

Use this when you want to purchase additional materials, perhaps if the workshop doesn't provide unlimited supplies. 追加で means 'as an addition' or 'separately'.

    材料はどこで買えますか。

    Where can I buy materials?

Zairyō wa doko de kaemasu ka.

Ask this if you need to purchase materials on your own, either at the workshop or elsewhere. どこで marks the place where the buying happens.

    もう少し必要です。

    I need a little more.

    Mō sukoshi hitsuyō desu.

A simple way to express that you need more of something, without specifying the action. 必要です means 'is necessary/needed'.

    追加の材料はありますか。

    Do you have additional materials?

Tsuika no zairyō wa arimasu ka.

Ask this to check availability of extra materials before requesting them. 追加の modifies 材料, so the phrase means 'additional materials'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern ~をもらえますか means 'Can I receive ~?' and is used when asking for something to be given to you. For example, 材料をもう少しもらえますか (Can I get a little more material?). To ask about purchasing, use ~で買えますか (Can I buy ~?). For instance, 追加で買えますか (Can I buy more?). Combine with もう少し (a little more) to specify quantity. These patterns are polite and suitable for staff interactions. Note that もらえますか is the potential form of もらう (to receive), so it literally asks whether receiving is possible; 買えますか is the potential form of 買う (to buy).

    When to use it

Use 材料をもう少しもらえますか when the workshop provides materials and you need more. If materials are not free, ask 追加で買えますか or 材料はどこで買えますか. For example, if you run out of clay, say 粘土をもう少しもらえますか. If you need to buy more, ask 追加で買えますか. Always use polite forms (ます form) with staff. Avoid casual forms like もらえる? unless you know the person well. When you want to name the item you are short of, the pattern ~が足りない (not enough ~) is useful, as in 粘土が足りない (I don't have enough clay).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、粘土が足りなくなったんですが、もう少しもらえますか。

Excuse me, I've run out of clay; could I get a little more?Sumimasen, nendo ga tarinaku natta n desu ga, mō sukoshi moraemasu ka.
    B

    はい、もちろんです。追加の粘土はあちらにあります。

Yes, of course. Additional clay is over there.Hai, mochiron desu. Tsuika no nendo wa achira ni arimasu.
    A

    ありがとうございます。あ、でも、もっとたくさん必要なら、追加で買えますか。

Thank you. Oh, but if I need a lot more, can I buy extra?Arigatō gozaimasu. A, demo, motto takusan hitsuyō nara, tsuika de kaemasu ka.
    B

    はい、追加の材料は受付で購入できます。1つ200円です。

Yes, you can purchase additional materials at the reception. It's 200 yen each.Hai, tsuika no zairyō wa uketsuke de kōnyū dekimasu. Hitotsu nihyaku en desu.

A little context goes a long way

In Japanese workshops, it's common to ask for materials politely. Using もらえますか is appropriate for receiving free supplies, while 買えますか is for purchasing. Avoid demanding language. If you're unsure, ask 追加の材料はありますか first. Staff may appreciate a humble tone, so adding すみません before your request is natural. Note that もらえますか frames the material as something you receive, so it can sound odd for items the workshop sells; use 買えますか for those.

    One thing to watch for

Using ください (kudasai) to demand more materials, as in 材料をもう少しください。

Try this instead: While ください is polite, it can sound like a direct order. For requests, もらえますか is softer and more appropriate. For example, say 材料をもう少しもらえますか instead of 材料をもう少しください。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask for a little more paper at a workshop?

    Show a sample answer

    紙をもう少しもらえますか。

This uses the pattern ~をもらえますか with 紙 (paper) and もう少し (a little more). It's polite and clear. You could also say 紙をもう少しください, but もらえますか is softer.

2What phrase would you use to ask if you can buy additional materials?

    Show a sample answer

    追加で買えますか。

This directly asks if purchasing more is possible. Alternatively, you could ask 追加の材料は買えますか, which is equally correct.

3If you need to find out where to purchase a specific material, what question would you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    材料はどこで買えますか。

This asks where materials can be bought. You can replace 材料 with a specific item, like 粘土はどこで買えますか (Where can I buy clay?).

    Take this with you

Remember to use 材料をもう少しもらえますか for free supplies and 追加で買えますか for purchases. Always keep your tone polite with ます forms and すみません when appropriate.
