Japanese for Pottery Workshops: Asking About Clay Types
Learn to ask which clay is which at a Japanese pottery workshop: この粘土は何ですか, どんな土がありますか, and vocabulary such as 陶土 and 磁土, with a staff role-play.

At a craft workshop in Japan, the fastest way to choose the right material is to ask about it directly. This lesson gives you two core questions for clay: one to identify the clay in front of you, and one to ask what kinds the workshop offers. You will also learn the key nouns 陶土 (stoneware clay) and 磁土 (porcelain clay), so you can say what you want to make and ask which clay suits it. The focus is spoken, polite workshop Japanese you can reuse with an instructor or shop staff.
By the end, you can…
- ask what a specific clay is using この粘土は何ですか.
- ask what kinds of clay are available using どんな土がありますか.
- name 陶土 and 磁土 and ask which one fits my project.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

What is this clay?
Kono nendo wa nan desu ka.
Point to or hold up one bag or lump of clay. Neutral-polite and safe with staff or an instructor.
What kinds of clay do you have?
Donna tsuchi ga arimasu ka.
Use when you want the range of options, not one specific item. 土 (tsuchi) is the everyday word for clay/earth material.
How are stoneware clay and porcelain clay different?
Tōdo to jido wa dō chigaimasu ka.
Asks for a comparison. Use it after you have heard both terms and want practical differences. Note that 陶土 is read とうど (tōdo) and 磁土 is read じど (jido).
I'd like to make a plate; which one would be good?
Osara o tsukuritai no desu ga, dochira ga ii desu ka.
State your project first, then ask for a recommendation. どちら is 'which of the two'.
Which one is suited to hand-building?
Tebineri ni muite iru no wa dore desu ka.
手びねり is hand-building without a wheel. Use どれ for 'which one' among three or more options.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
It identifies one thing you can see or touch. For a set of options, switch to どんな土がありますか: どんな asks 'what kind of', and ありますか asks what exists or is available. (What is this clay?) with どんな土がありますか (What kinds of clay are there?). To ask about two named choices, use To ask which fits your goal, say
When to use it
Use この粘土は何ですか when a bag or lump is in front of you and you need its name or type. Use どんな土がありますか at the start of a session, before you choose, when you want the whole range. Once you hear 陶土 and 磁土, ask どう違いますか for the practical difference, or name your project and ask どちらがいいですか. If you already know you want to work by hand, 手びねりに向いているのはどれですか narrows the choice. Keep questions short and add すみません before them when approaching busy staff.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
Excuse me, what kinds of clay do you have?Sumimasen, donna tsuchi ga arimasu ka.
We have stoneware clay and porcelain clay.Tōdo to jido ga arimasu.
I'd like to make a plate; which one would be good?Osara o tsukuritai no desu ga, dochira ga ii desu ka.
For a plate, stoneware clay is easy to use.Osara nara tōdo ga tsukaiyasui desu yo.A little context goes a long way
In a Japanese workshop, staff often explain materials briefly and expect you to ask follow-up questions rather than volunteer long preferences. Adding すみません before a question is normal when someone is busy. Instructors may use technical terms such as 陶土 and 磁土 alongside everyday 土, so it helps to repeat the word you heard to confirm: 陶土ですね。
One thing to watch for
Using 何の土ですか to mean 'what kind of clay is it?'
Try this instead: 何の土ですか sounds like 'clay of what?' and is vague. For 'what kind', use どんな土ですか or どんな土がありますか. To identify one item, say
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1You are holding one bag of clay and want its name. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
この points to the item you are holding, and 何ですか asks what it is. この土は何ですか is also fine if you use the everyday word 土.
2You want to know the full range of clay before choosing. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
どんな asks 'what kind of' and ありますか asks what is available. どんな粘土がありますか is a valid alternative with the more specific noun.
3You want to make a plate and need a recommendation between two clays. What do you ask?
Show a sample answer
Stating the project first gives context, and どちら asks which of two. If there are three or more options, use どれがいいですか instead.
Ask この粘土は何ですか for one item and どんな土がありますか for the range, then name your project and ask どちらがいいですか to choose between 陶土 and 磁土.
